Shingling questions plus fascia priming/sealing

I'll be finishing up the roof underlayment this weekend on my 12x20 shed (6/12 roof) and then it's on to shingling, which I'm a little anxious about as I've never shingling before and in my research there seems to be 400 different ways of skinning that cat.

I already have the ridge vent cut out at the ridge. So do I simply shingle up to the vent on both sides, then cover it with the ridge vent (and of course shingle over the ridge vent)? Meaning the ridge vent will be tacked down on top of the shingles running up to the vent, correct?

I also hope to get my 1by fascia boards up this weekend as well so I can get the drip edge on as well. I planned on priming/sealing the 1by fascia boards before I install them. Do I just need to use a basic Kilz for this, or do I need something different? Thanks.

(This forum has been a life saver on this build. Wish I would have found it sooner!)

Use shingle starter strip, stagger joints and use architectural shingles. Don't paint the facia use plastic or metal pre bent.

Or is using regular 3 tab, just run the first course upside down at the edge, then start over that and go up.

You are correct that the facia board should be primed and painted before they drip edge is put on. Any good primer, paint or even the paint with primer included can be used. As far as your ridge vent, you can get the type that you nail shingles over for a lot of people use the metal ridge vent. In that case or in the case of any ridge vent put it in in place two markets length and then use shingling caps to cover the peak of the roof that the ridge vent is not going to cover. If using the metal ridge vent you’ll see it’s attached by roofing nails down through the trough edge of the vent. I would recommend a high-quality silicone to cover these nails After you install the ridge vent. It seems in time there is always the possibility of rain leaking down through these nails. You’ll do fine

Likely there will be a "short shingle course" to match up to the ridge vent.

I used double-thick caps (GAF Timberline) that were really nice to work with. The GAF Cobra SNow COuntry ridge vents have super long ring shank nails that are nice to work with.

Definitely nail the ridge vent and its cap shingles by hand.

A tip from my friend the roofer was to start at either south or east end of the building. The strongest prevailing winds come from west or north and this lets the wind slip over the cap shingles instead of trying to wedge underneath each leading edge. The last shingle has exposed nail heads, I used actual Black Jack neoprene cement, and then embedded as much "shingle gravel" into the wet sealant as I could get to stick, to give it a little more protection from the sun.

Lots more people with more experience than me. I will add to chalk some lines both horizontally and vertically so they are straight, you will have to look at these for years!

Different kinds of ridge vents, too many to generalize installation instructions. Refer to manufacturer's guide on install.

Drip cap, take care to install that properly. Being metal it will expand and contract with the heat. Pre-punch holes for screws or nails to allow for movement. Not too tight, kind of like vinyl siding install.

Painting fascia ? Before or after, doesn't matter. Kilz is overrated ****.

That’s what I like to hear! What would you recommend?

By doing it this way you now have a seam that the underlayment will show in between pieces of shingle. You need to stagger the starter strip too. 3tab is more of a pain in the *** than it's worth.

Ice and water shield, 1 3' layer, some do the entire roof. Or some other under payment product. Could still use 20 lb felt paper if you can still get it. In theory, facia should never see a drop of water or snow if everything else is done right. I have never painted them, never have seen an issue. I just removed eaves from a 70 year old garage. Fascia was in perfect condition. This was bare, with no aluminum facia covering.
