Three bay walked into a trap coming over to my place. I’m preparing to set up at a tractor show in a few weeks and did a quick set up to see how much table space I needed.

I was impressed by Three bays restraint looking over everything.
That is until I set out the three sets he posted up.

So I don’t have anything to show for the first day, but I did enable!!!!:lol_hitti

It was good to see you today.

:lol_hitti

Same here, good to see you too. Next time if I see the tables out I'm turning around, lol.

Nice block grinder Brian! I think the trip to Austin was a good luck charm for you based on that jackpot you hit on New Year's Eve and just that the guy actually held that 1HP grinder for you. It was great meeting you over the holidays and you're welcome to drop by anytime you're in town.

Nice opening write up LS. Good luck to all in 2020.
I found the 2019 thread mid-summer and it took awhile to catch up but it was definitely educational and entertaining. My resolution is to keep up with the posts this year.

No sales locally so I picked up a free front loading LG washer off CL. I scrounged the SS drum out of it for a backyard fire pit. Easy to disassemble after a quick model specific YouTube video. The 'spider web' on the back of the drum was broken in 2 places. I briefly considered replacing it and putting the washer back in service as everything else looked to be in good working order but a fire pit seems like more fun. Works great and burns efficiently due to all the air flow.d9213445546ae1d2ad51007c3b14e750.jpg85acc0df1b5386bef3a2008711b83a5a.jpg04eff2981555ea86f1435f68728151af.jpg

Sorry for the sideways pictures.

Checking in flea market haul #1 (Lugz 2020_01), which I am calling "All Things Great and Small". Although more accurately, "Two Things Great and Small"...

The "Great" thing is a wooden Army trunk with a huge Yale-supplied Ordnance Dept padlock on it. :bounce:

attachment.php

No key. As you can see, the seller ignobly pried up the hinge to see what was inside, which was nothing. "The weight of it was deceiving," he said. I already knew I was going to buy it as soon as I saw it, but his sales pitch assured me that I could "easily just cut the lock off with bolt cutters." :wtf: (He obviously never looked at the back of the lock, or, if he did, he didn't know what the logo was and didn't bother researching. I didn't tell him that the lock was worth more than the trunk many times over.)

This is from WWI or Interwar. Before WWII for sure. The markings indicate it belonged at one point in time to a Captain Samuel R. Kimble, 7th Corps, Omaha, Nebraska, and he had books in it. I believe it was originally used to store a grindstone. Doing research on this officer and the trunk is going to be fun.

The "Small" thing - and it's really small, is a complimentary tie-clip, made of brass, that looks exactly like a 1930's-1950's era Snap/on Torq-o-Meter torque wrench! :pimpflash

Here it is next to a hinge on the trunk.

I decided to do some picking today after all. I don't know whether to fold this up into a tri-corner metaphorical casket flag or use it down in the Lugzsonian as a dust curtain, but my first "find" of 2020 is the last thing I will ever take away from one of my three sources, which just closed forever.
Would that be Tacony Palmyra?

That's funny Lugz, I took these photos yesterday at the flea because I thought of both you and Jeff Moss. Seller wanted 200 and said it was valued at 5.

Nope. Lakewood.

Wow. Some kind of Quartermaster Corps safe. I wonder what they kept in there? Payroll maybe. Nice. And quite a bit more secure than the Yale & Towne padlock on my Ordnance Dept Grindstone chest. :)

Very cool couple of finds Lugz! Really digging that Ordnance lock! I wonder if Jeff Moss has seen that lock before and can he make you a key for it?

Thanks, Tex.

I've been doing a little light reading. Apparently that series of Yale & Towne lock was used by others as well (US Forestry Service, for example), so the blanks and keyway are well known. I was going to contact Jeff, but I think I need to get a number off it to help him narrow it down first. All day I've been thinking how fortunate it was that it was locked up with the YALE logo facing out and the Ordnance Dept logo facing the trunk.

Lugz if you can find a key that slides in - even if it won't open the lock, that helps as it id's the blank. (this is why I keep a ton of old "useless" keys; and several times now I've had the right key...

Slow start on my first outing of the year--but interesting.
A dollar each bought a Diamalloy 10" Adjustable and a Cornwell-A box wrench.

02 Jan 20-1.jpg02 Jan 20-2.jpg

I'd never heard of Cornwell before today, so I did some research. Turns out they started in 1919 and are still in business today. They bought Kennedy Tool Boxes in 2016. They've always been located in Ohio and, like Snap-On, sell their wares out of trucks.

According to Alloy Artifacts, the '-A' designation indicates a 1927 manufacture--the same year the SAE and USS standards went out of fashion. Therefore, since this wrench has the -A and sports SAE standard, it is believed to have been manufactured very early in 1927--slightly less than eight years after Eugene Cornwell started the company.

The 3/8 and 7/16 SAE converts to 9/16 and 5/8. The 1929 Cornwell Tool catalog on Archive.org shows that sized box wrench (#425) going for $1.50--so 91 years later, I got a deal!! Although, that would have been for a Cornwell-C.

a Cornwell-A box wrench.
Nice find. I like the hand-forged no-two-wrenches-alike look on early Cornwell. We have a good Cornwell thread down on the GJ Vintage Discussion forum with many fine examples and good dialogue. Click on the Sticky at the top of the Vintage Discussion forum. Scroll down through the Index until you come to 'Cornwell' and click on that link.

If you're interested in the history of objects, Capt. Samuel R. Kimble (the name on my trunk...) had quite an intriguing career.

attachment.php

If you don't know how to read an Army Register, I will translate...

He was born in Kansas in 1882, enlisted (at the age of 35!) in the Army in 1917, which is when the US entered WWI. Between April and June he was promoted from Private to Sergeant and finally transitioned to the Coastal Artillery as an officer (2nd Lieutenant), and promoted again to 1st Lieutenant a month later. In Nov 1920 he was moved to the Ordnance Department. (The "7th Corps Area," stenciled on the trunk is an interwar designation. The army was responsible for huge geographic swaths between the wars, sort of like an early version of the Dept of Homeland Security. 7th Corps Area included Arkansas, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, ND, SD, Iowa and Nebraska, with HQ in Omaha. It's during this time that he re-purposed this trunk from a "GRINDSTONE CHEST" to a transport trunk for his personal "BOOKS.") He was promoted to Major in Aug 1930 and Lt. Colonel in July 1940. He retired in June 1942, but he was put back on Active Duty (a month later!) and served in WWII until November 1943.

The 1958 edition of the Army Register indicates that he died in 1957 at Monmouth Junction, NJ, not too far from the flea market.

It had been waiting for someone like you or you specifically ;0) to come along! Gotta love it when the stars align!!!

Edit: Just read your summary of his military career. That trunk was waiting for YOU to find it. Very cool!! Thanks for sharing that Lugz!

There were no interesting sales around here, but I needed to get over the winter doldrums. So, I went out to the old stand-by; Restore! And looky at what I found:

a very early Fulton socket set, minus ratchet. I also found a Penens extension and a '50s Thorsen socket.

Nice and clean inside. Things like this are really fueling my 20s-30s collection. After the Restore, I headed over to one of my favorite bookscouting haunts, where I picked up these lovely ladies:

Edit: I was wrong, it isn't missing a ratchet! There is a drive plug in the T-handle.

I finished 2019 with a bang, and rang in the new year with a unicorn!

Today I ventured north into no-man's land, roughly half way between my home in Portland and the ravenous GJ crew in Seattle, to buy this 1 HP Craftsman Block grinder on pedestal stand.

The deal has been in the works for a week, but since I was in Texas for the holidays, I wasn't able to get it until today. Listed on FB Marketplace for $175, I offered the seller $200 if he'd hold it.

I have to say: if you have to drive between Portland and Seattle, do it on New Years day. I've never had an easier drive to, or from!

Brian

Well don’t you **** for finding such a rare unicorn [emoji38]

OK, I broke the drought today with an Estate sale (very close to home too, < a mile) It mentioned a lot of hunting/fishing/camping stuff...

Someone called and got the lanterns the day before the sale started...

Anyway:

.22 pistol cleaning and (empty) first aid Kits (Almost had them coming and going) - this FA kit box is a good size for camping, so will get stocked up. it had one back edge of the cover bent so it didn't close properly, but that was about a 15 second fix... and then a stack of the big "5 gallon" stirring sticks. These actually make decent material for small projects as well.

attachment.php

Two drop loop gun belts, sans the holsters -nice quality )laminated and stitched), and my size to boot! Loops are for .22 and 44/45 - and 25 count each.

attachment.php

All this was "free" mixed in with what come later, two insulated shank drivers, a sheath for something (flashlight?) Some loose brass and a could of sinker releases.

attachment.php

15 Vintage ammo boxes most full of fired brass. only the shot shel box is empty.

attachment.php

And 3 gallons of camp fuel (from 2 different Eras) one was 3.12 from Payless, another 3:49 from Gemco, and the last one is pretty new. All full!

Coleman fuel these days ranges from about 12 to 15 bucks!

attachment.php

Got it all for about what the fuel would cost.

We went to an estate sale in Newark, CA this morning, and arrived about an hour after it opened. It looked like it had been picked over by locals but we still found a few things that the earlier shoppers had left behind. The Kennedy carry box was nice and there was some early Craftsman tools autographed by the previous owner. Just for a laugh I picked up a lighted magnifying doodad. I’m still trying to figure out the instructions. The next sale was a family run estate sale in Martinez and we picked up a few more pieces. There was a decent ammo box with the Ordnance logo and an early Trimo 14” pipe wrench.

I don’t think a ratchet would fit in the box. Except for the decal, it looks the same as my early S-K set.

Well, you have two extensions, but I have a plug. But otherwise, they are very similar. And I figured that I didn't need the ratchet after I realized it was a pug to a female end.

Craigs List Estate sale this morning about 45 min from my place. Got there early and managed to talk my way into the garage. It was definitely SK Day for the Rickster this morning. I was picking tools out of this old rusty hand box and the gal said she'd charge me less if I just took the whole box...OK, sounds like a deal to me! The guys coming up the driveway were giving me the stink-eye as I was walking out with the toolbox and a canvas bag of tools.

1/2dr Deep set 1/2to 15/16 and a shallow set 7/16 to 1-1/4
3/8dr sets deep 3/8 to 13/16, shallow set 3/8 to 7/8, metric deep 10 to 19 missing a couple.
Two wrench sets SAE & Metric
3/8dr swivel socket set 3/8 to 3/4 and a mix-mosh of 1/4dr SAE sockets.
1/2dr Ratchet, Roto-head 3/8dr Ratchet, couple of speeders, breaker bars and extensions.
Two SK ball peen hammers and a couple of Vulcan body hammers.
Husky USA 3/8dr set, the ratchet is a bit sticky so it's soaking in some trans fluid.
Also a brand new in the box Buck Brothers 7" adjustable block plane.

Your the man Rickster take it all sort it later

Nice haul !
I went to a sale about 10 min from my house run by a self admitted hoarder. He had a bunch of stuff laying and I found this cast iron grate, probably for a furnace cold air return. What do you guys think? ($5.00)

Seems like a good candidate for Evaporust.

No tools there but the thing that killed me was hearing from him that just yesterday, he hauled 500 pounds of iron to the scrap yard including TWO VISES :(

RagTop, you seem to be claiming a very large territory! You're a mite closer to Okla. than to San Antonio where TinMedic just became my local competition.

Let the hunt begin!

Ok so I'm a little bit stingy! : )

Cool, you're giving me your Plomb stuff??

you're on the contact if I disappear list!

Haha. I already have dibs.

Looking for the following Plomb Pebbles Wrench 3061

you're also on the contact if I disappear list!

Killer find !! I got the same one about 2 years ago and that thing will eat up some metal!

I hit a local garage sale on my way to work today theat had tools listed in the description. What I found was a smallish bin of cheap foreign tools. I grabbed the only good thing in it and asked how much. Lady said $1 dollar for the bin. I said I just wanted the one ratchet and she said free! So a ho hum find for the right price. Plus it gets me going for the new year.
