See... just a storage compartment right now.

It’s as organized as I can possibly be and still shove everything in there.

Funny. I also have a 7X20 Quicksilver VRV toy hauler with my boy’s KTMs, a couple canoes, ladders, etc... It’ll fill up no problem!

I did sell a sports car, a boat and a Sprinter RV to fund the project. All of which will be replaced later... much later. [emoji857] It’s actually kind of ironic that I build a nice garage to keep all my toys in, but have to sell my toys to build a nice garage. All in due time.

The Kubota is new. Sold my BX23 and bought a B2650 cab. Got the snow blower, blade, box scraper, front end loader, 60” mid mower and carry-all. Wife thought I was crazy to get an enclosed cab. However, we got 10” of snow a couple days before Thanksgiving and almost didn’t make it out to visit her family. I was able to get up early and clear the driveway in time... in my pajamas... while listening to the radio! Love that thing.

That avatar pic was a mistake. I was just looking at what I should use and it saved it. I belong to a lot of forums and don’t have all the profiles set up just yet. Should be fixed for now.

PA: yep we all didn't get a billion dollars when we were born to just spend as we wish so sacrifices have to be made occasionally.

10 feet of snow. WOW!! so your pics didn't show any snow so is it gone or were pics taken earlier?

while you are in your profile i'm not sure you know that you can set your view of threads to see the most recent post and they added a setting to view 100 posts per page and I think when I signed up 6+ years ago you could only view 10 at a time.

anyway if you might need a little help navigating around GJ just ask and i'll help if I can.

10 inches, LOL. 10 feet would be crazy.

99% of the time I use Tapatalk on my phone to view all my forums together; garage journal, adventure rider, airline pilot central, expedition portal, etc... It gives you all your notifications at once. Occasionally when I binge on the computer, I’ll go to the actual site.

Thanks

I’ve got the day off. Taking the truck in for a recall. Then I’ll upload some more pics!

I've been watching/reading the thread, you've made good progress, so it won't be too-long before the rest is done.

I see you have a lot of bikes, both bicycles, and a couple of motorcycles, is that an F800 BMW? And from the offroad bicycles, it looks like you're a hardtail rider sometimes. I suppose the full-suspension bikes are kinder to the body as you age. I haven't kept-up with the latest & greatest designs, I was more-involved in offroad riding in the very-early 1990's, and am a 'retro-grouch,' no suspension at-all on my 28 year-old Klein, bought new, w/a Shimano top-of-the-line at the time Deore XT gruppo. I don't ride street or road much now, because of aging/deterioration. I have many friends who are getting, considering, or already have spinal laminectomies, or knee and/or hip replacements. I don't think I'm at that point yet.

Did you ever out-drive John Daley? I have only an observer's knowledge of golf, I never have played. I know that he was at one time supposed to be the 'long-ball' guy. The younger brother of a high school classmate was on the PGA tour in the 1990's, he got his card and was able to stay with it for about 6 years, driving about 266 yards average according to PGA stats and ~67%, which seems pretty-decent. He never won the tournament, but he was able to make a living on the tour at the time, not-sure he's involved in the game anymore, perhaps a pro someplace.

You did ultra-marathon running? Jeez, that's got to be tough. Our son does half's and full marathons, I've never been much of a runner. Are you still running?

The house from what pics are there looks great from the outside. Congratulations on the build. How-different is it from PA? One of my friends who is a Florida GC built a spec home from a lot in Durango CO, and now he's bought a lot in the Florida Keys to develop. I never got out there to CO to see it, I know that there used-to be a mountain biking hall of fame out there, and that a lot of the sport's pros lived there.

PA: sorry yes 10 feet is CRAZY, but since you live in the mountains I didn't think 10 inches was that much cause we had it snow 2.5 feet here one day in Seattle next to Puget Sound. I remember some of my friends in Illinois in maybe 2006 or 2007 or therabouts that did have 9 feet of snow pile up around their homes and it was a site.

Drift: i'm about 12 years older than John Daly and when I was able to really swing hard in my early 20's we had persimmon heads and whippy graphite or old school steel shafts that we had to slow our swings down to hit correctly. sort of like fishing I'd say. AND older golf balls I used would go out of round with about 3 drives.

I've seen John Daly hit in person several times and he does put the hit on the ball, but I was more impressed with Bubba Watson's ability to hit his shots low and high and long if we are talking tour players. so when I was 49 years old the last year I competed in long drive's senior division on their tour my swing speed averaged 129, ball speed 190 and average distance was about 355 yards (mostly on non mowed soft driving ranges and not PGA tour hard fairways which would have been a joy to play on) and my driver's length was 48 inches. John's and Bubba's top swing speeds might have got to 130mph on tour, but I usually saw #'s on telecasts in the low 120's. Cameron Champ is top dog now and he's just right at about 130mph and I only wish I had his and the younger guy's equipment and technology to use when i was younger cause i doubt I would have drank as much and practiced more without all the equipment frustrations. i'm guessing tour players play with 45-46 long graphite shafts that are dialed in at the factories before they get them and you can adjust with a wrench now instead of changing a shaft with epoxy and the time involved to do that.

Tiger's swing speed now is about 120 mph and ball speed about 170mph, but that kid can flat putt and hit his irons AND think his way around a golf course.

there's one kid bouncing around the Canadian tour now that retired from long drive a few years ago after being world champ a couple times as a Junior and then world champ in his early 20's a couple times named Jamie Sadlowski that had swing speed of 155 and ball speed of 225 so his average distance was well over 400 yards and he is only about 5'10" and 165 pounds. if he ever quits trick shot stuff and seriously improves his wedge and putting OMG he will win and keep winning, but he makes quite a bit doing exhibitions. check out a few of his youtube videos.

PA: sorry for the derail and hope you don't mind, but thought i'd answer Drift's question instead of Pm cause I thought you might like to know too since it sounds like you are fairly athletic.

have a great day!!!

Yep 2010 BMW F800GS. It’s been in ALL the lower 48 states! Been thinking about a 2019 or 2020 BMW 1250 GSA.

Lots of bicycles, but it my kids that love to ride. I do it for exercise and cross training. The reason for the hard tail is for bikepacking. My older son, 15yr old, and I bikepacked the Colorado Trail last year from Waterton to Copper Mountain. A couple hundred miles over 5 days. We’ll try to finish it up this summer and next.

I’m not the golfer. That was drivesitfar.

Colorado is vastly different than PA. Mainly in how many very active people there are out here. Absolutely love Colorado!

So I’m going to be working on the decision to either go with tinted glass garage doors or not in the next month or so. Still on the fence. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The doors are south facing. The roof will carry over 50 solar panels. May heat some with electric baseboard, but I will also have a gas Reznor type heated.

The glass would allow a LOT of light in, but would be energy inefficient.

Also, I want to go with door openers that are on the wall above the doors and NOT in the ceiling. Anyone have experience with that?

I vote for tinted glass doors because they look super cool. But I have no stake in paying for your energy bills. :bounce:

Really though, if the energy difference isn't going to cost you that much more and you like the look/functionality of them, then I would say go for it. You already built a dream house, if it brings you joy to look at a nice garage door, then go for it.

PA: maybe as you get to my age and start slowing down a bit golf might be something to try. for me it's maybe the most challenging sport both mentally and physically that i've done AND it's still a mystery how you can play well one day and not so well the next.

as far as your garage doors are you worried about security? are you thinking all glass doors or just a section? what size are they or did I miss you mentioning that?

we put low E on our big western facing windows 30 years ago and it helped some, but it gets pretty hot in our house especially our living room during the summers if we don't pull the blinds inside. we did get see through blinds on the outside we keep down almost all summer, but it still gets pretty warm in the house.

personally I like natural lighting in the garage, but we have such a small garage we just put on 2 solid single doors more for security since we live in the city. it looks like you have some windows up high at the peak of your roof which should let some natural light in?

can you maybe post up some pics of what doors you like? another thought about your doors is are your kids going to be using them and since you are in the mountains maybe weather is another factor? i know when we went from uninsulated garage doors to insulated a few years ago it made all the difference and at the same time we added a liftmaster side mounted garage door opener that is very quiet and works great.

We live in a gated community and have almost zero traffic other than 1 or 2 neighbors.

Kids won’t be using the doors as this really is a “shop” and not a garage. It’ll be used for vehicle storage, gear storage and woodworking, metal working, motorcycle repair.

The doors face directly south and the upper windows (which mechanically open with remotes) face directly north. The prevalent wind is out of the north.

The three garage doors are 10’ X 10’

The “man door” is a double door that will open on one side on a daily use basis, but can unlock the other side when needed.

The shop will mostly be kept at just above freezing. The only time it’ll be warmer, will be when I’m out there working. No A/C planned. Rarely use A/C in the house.

PA: with all that roof on your garage/shop and it looks like your home has a pretty open feel have you thought about solar panels to maybe power up your AC and HEAT. I bet before too long you'll have an all electric car in that cool garage? Tesla seems to be at the head of the class with electric cars, but I see Volvo is getting on board with it along with other big companies so I'm thinking it's inevitable.

there are a ton of garage doors to choose from if you want glass or mirror and here's a couple pics I saved after googling.

another idea is to have a 3d painting or vinyl sticker put on your doors which might not appeal to everybody, but I think it's a fun idea.

Yep planning 54 solar panels on the shop roof. The entire house and shop layout was determined to have the proper solar.

The garage doors I’m thinking of was glass with a dark tint.

PA: I managed to finish reading all your thread last night and even though it's taken a while for you to get to this point I for one am enjoying your build immensely.

i'm guessing your landscaper was a different contractor than the one building your home and garage?

when I first clicked on your thread and saw the driveway done with the framing going up on your garage it made me look twice cause it was so clean.

hopefully the builders are doing their best to keep your landscaper's work alone and not damaging the driveway.

after thinking about your glass doors more i'd say the benefits of light and the sun's heat might offset any heat loss cons. Plus the look of the glass doors really makes your nice garage pop even more. your call on dark or light frosted glass.

thanks again for sharing your adventure while you build your family's and your dream home.

It definitely did. However, I’m already in the “wish I would’ve “ group. The slab is 4” at 3500 psi. That might be on the minimum for a lift.

PA: one option that shouldn't be a ton of cash might be to just cut out and pull out and dig a bit and pour a thicker slab in the new lift's location. one of our members who owns a 100+ year old home only had a 2 inch slab in his small one car garage and he cut out a section and poured it thicker where he put his MAX JAX lift.

i think it was maybe 4 years ago if you want to search on his thread and here's the link or just make a post and ask WOODY if that might be something you'd consider cause he's very high tech and just sold a 9,000 sq ft commercial building he owned that I think he had his heating bills down to $200 a month in Ontario that gets mighty cold.

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=263351&highlight=woody

you might be at a minimum for a commercial shop, but since it sounds like it's just for you and maybe a friend or two i'm guessing you'll be ok.

good luck!!

Slammer, I have the jack shaft mount Liftmaster openers on 3 doors. Love the way they work - very quiet and smooth - and how they keep the area above the door clear.

i'm guessing you did quite a bit of research for the solar? what system(s) are you using or is it a custom made one that you are putting together by yourself?

hope you are staying warm and dry cause it looks like maybe it's sunny in that picture.

Shop is coming along nicely. Waiting on framing inspection.

Finally got some ice shield and paper on the roof. The metal roof should be done soon.

Met with the insulation installers. I think I might go with a couple inches of spray and a standard fiberglass roll over that. The spray should get all the cracks and crevices and add rigidity.

Side mount door openers and rails that stick close to the roofline.

Weather is always beautiful on the Front Range.

Won’t see the solar for a year... maybe two. Afrotoo much will change by then.

PA: I know the guys spraying insulation on their metal siding and roofs is an awesome idea and just curious if there is any downside when you spray it on wood?

keep up the good work and happy to hear your weather is cooperating so you can get it roofed and the doors on before another blizzard hits your area.

cheers

Our entire house has spray foam; walls and ceiling. Past the energy evaluation with flying colors. It’s not cheap. Perhaps, the reason it’s not very common. This is our retirement home. I think we’ll recoup the cost in energy savings.

Beautiful property and home! Not sure how I missed it all, but thank you for sharing. As your forever home, doing it right, and making sure it’s done right, takes time, money and effort... but so worth it in the end. Your stunning results justify it! Looking forward to the progress on the garage.

Thanks, very nice sentiment. Sharing pictures always makes me feel humble. Not sure how I got here in life, or why I deserve such incredible fortune. But might as well enjoy the ride...

I’ll keep the page as updated as possible. I know the shop build will be a slow process. But it’ll be worth it.

I haven’t done much motorcycle maintenance, wood working or metal working, but as my kids start to become young men, I may have more time for it. So before it goes to finished walls, I need to have a really good plan in place. Can’t wait to see how thing turn out!

BTW, I REALLY appreciate all the advice from you guys that have been there/done that!

PA: one thing i've done and heard a lot of guys say is to put in extra electrical outlets if you have the power. not sure what you'll need for 220 outlets but putting in a few extra might give you options as you maybe change things later especially if you are planning on sheet rocking the studs.

I agree you have built your dream home and shop and a lot of us wish it was ours so thanks for sharing cause having pictures of a dream might help us get ours.

stay warm!!

Agree 100%. I plan I’m having a 30 amp line in every stall for RVs and trailers and a 220 in the work area for a MIG welder.

I went through a similar build a few years ago when my wife and I remodeled our property and I got to build my dream shop, something that I never thought I’d ever have the means too.. I’m lucky and I know it. Like you, I enjoy a dabbling in woodworking, messing with my toys and a variety of hobbies. I’m certainly no master of any trade, but just enjoy spending time in the shop with my boys, my two oldest are in their 20’s but still come over with friends to takes advantage of the shop, and that why I built it!

As you mentioned, this forum is a treasure trove of ideas and information. There is so much collective knowledge here. I admit I didn’t take as much of an advantage that I should have, but the fun is in the journey, and as my shop evolves I enjoy learning new ideas and techniques.

Sounds like you’re enjoying it!
