Thanks gentlemen! Can you tell me what the two indented areas on the secondary blade are designed for? My guess for the one on the sharp side is probably for cutting or scoring cable, but I don't have a guess for the one on the top of the blade.

The notch on the back may be to clear the fingernail slot on the spearpoint blade. Oops, someone got that already.

The notch on the cutting edge seems to be a newer thing, my older Shrade parrot's beak, nor my dad's, have it. Not sure about my other ones. Googling electrician knife brings up mixed results. Shrade no, camilus no
XCelite yes.

Hit a couple estate sales this morning, but only picked up these from one sale. The cabinet was mounted on the wall of a small shed. The sign is painted wood and was just laying in the same shed with no price on it. Ended up giving $25 to get both.

9 AM this morning found me in line for a nearby estate sale with my friend and fellow tool collector d42jeep.

I’ll let him post the contents of the bags he came away with, but as for me, all I took away was a very low mileage Milwaukee hole shooter with a Jacobs chuck, a Schauer 12 volt battery charger, and 2 five inch “adjustable” C-clamps made in USA.

I was quite pleased when the guy said $15

My wife and I met up with Shiftless right around opening time and we all went straight to the garage. There was an S-K socket set box with a few worthwhile tools in it and some more scattered around the rest of the garage. My wife found a few more tools in s separate workshop. It was fun shopping with Shiftless and we came away with some worthwhile tools at the right price. The Herbrand tools were interesting and the little Xcelite case was perfect for the driver we found last week.

The second sale of the day was in San Leandro again, just like last week. We found quite a bit of Craftsman including two carry boxes. There were some nice Diamond tools and some Dunlap tools for that collection. The Barcalo wrenches were some of the last made after the sale of the company, The diagonals are P&C. The last shot is the Dunlap wrench set my wife picked up.

Interesting color scheme- can you tell whether it's blacking or just paint? Original? Don't think I've ever seen that on a Dunlap.

I've been feeling left out since yard sale season is still 3 or more months away.
So I thought I would waste time on craigslist going through the tool section.
Clicked on a listing that said simply "Hand & some power tools"
I phoned the fella & probably wouldn't have made the drive, except I needed to put some miles on the minivan that had just gotten back from the body shop to re-set the emission computer for state inspection. (3rd deer in 4 years....)
Seller was a retired Harley plant electrician & got a 20% discount when the Snap-on guy visited.
I got there & was surprised how clean all the tools were. (freeking electricians)
He is selling & moving south. Said just look through everything.
I made a pile on the floor of mostly Snap-on & threw him a price of $280.
He says that will be fine. I took this stuff home, & left him my number to call me whenever he is ready to let the other stuff go at a fire sale price to go into my flip inventory.
He phoned the next day & said to expect to hear from him in a couple days for the rest of the stuff. Klein, Greenlee, Craftsman, Milwaukee etc.
I'm having a little trouble sleeping thinking about the rest of the stuff.....:)

damn!

I think it is original paint. Most of the paint has usually worn off of those wrenches that I have in the Dunlap box. These wrenches are so lightly used that much of it remains.

I didn’t check them out that closely but I did take an interior shot. Maybe 1/2” drive on the taller one with the tray and 3/8” drive on the lower one? I can measure the socket slot widths tomorrow if you’re interested.

After work yesterday, paid the $10 entry fee and perused Automania at the Allentown Fairgrounds. Generally convivial. There was a beautiful ivory Plymouth Fury, but not much else in full size cars, a few vendors had many small scale models. Lots of used parts, magazines, real and repro signage; not many tools or boxes. I dug up $6 of pliers off the dollar table while listening to the eccentric ramblings of another patron who got there before me, and who bought ten times the amount I did. I flipped through a pile of Popular Science and Popular Mechanics from the 1950s and 60s, finding two full color Bonney ads, but the whole pile had dried mold and smelled rank, so even at only $1ea, I left them for the noseblind. A guy had a dozen Ford wrenches for $3ea, but I don’t need them. Outdoors, where there is no fee, a few vendors set up rows of tables, so if you happen to be in the area today or tomorrow, that’s a free opportunity. Next year, I may do just that. There was a heritage Cman barn roof carry box with the leather handle, but it was loaded with random-eras Cman sockets, and the vendor was ‘t budging on prices “so early,” so I left it behind.
Today, MrsLS and I are headed to the Jacktown Steam Show outdoors at Bangor PA. Hoping to lay hands on some old tools there and see some engines before the forecast snow and rain hits midmorning.

Thanks Don! Not this time. Just interested. :0) I need to check out some catalogs at TA to just see what socket/tool sets Sears sold with these boxes.

You’re off to a fantastic start. May the rest of your picking year go as well as this... even 1/4 as good as this would be great in my book.

A simple stew of ground and cubed beef, mirepoix, and potatoes. Hot, and at 19° with a steady, finger-chilling breeze, it DOES hit the spot! Also a well-managed bonfire to kill the chill.
$34 brought home a No113 Bonney Champion table vise, 12” Bonney Stillson wrench, two Bonney 525 textile machine wrenches, 1/2dr V-selector Cman ratchet, two brass drawer pulls in a style I’ve been accumulating, a 936 1-1/8” Patent Appld For BluepoinT Chicago Boxocket line wrench, an Indestro stamped-steel pliers, and three sizes of Cee Tee Co Jamestown NY USA slip joint pliers. Edit - no the smallest (narrow, too) are Crescent Tool Co.
Stopped at the Nazareth Wegmans for provisions on the way home. The snow had just started and had accumulated a half inch when we left. It’s supposed to be a quick storm, so more adventures planned for tomorrow.

Yesterday's sale was so-so. The backyard shed was where it was happening and it was a mess. Floor was rotted out so they had pieces of lumber and spongy plywood at competing angles and heights to trip the unwary. House had been vacant for about a year and the shed hadn't seen the light of day in much, much longer. Had a lot of big power tools but most were from HF. Had a Yost-type rotating jaw vise from China but it was pretty beat up and missing the pipe jaws--and they still wanted more than a new one from HF.

The only thing I picked up was the Huot toolbox, the 1/8" stamp dies and whetstone. I should have taken a before picture of the box--you couldn't tell it was blue through all the grime and sawdust--it was living under a tablesaw. As you can see it was the PO's "Launmower" and engines box--mostly junk that didn't make it into my garage. What I kept is what you see. The PO had crafted a wooden insert for the sockets that was not only redundant, but reduced the number of sockets the space holds--probably as an inventory aid. It's gone.

17 Jan 19-1.jpg17 Jan 19-2.jpg17 Jan 19-3.jpg17 Jan 19-4.jpg

I did think his sockets were interesting. A completely mismatched set of all the big names--from left to right:

17 Jan 19-7.jpg

Husky(?) Well used 1/4" universal. Only the y is visible with maybe the leg of the k.
Thorsen-5/16
The rest are 3/8" drives.
Plomb-1/4
Proto-7/16
Challenger-1/2
Snap-On-9/16
Indestro-9/16
Williams-5/8
Snap-On-11/16
P&C-3/4

Finally, a wrench to add to my Gimmicky Tools collection. A Quali-Kraft "Slide-A-Wrench". You can read about it here:
http://progress-is-fine.blogspot.com/2013/02/vanished-tool-makes-quali-kraft-slide.html
I can definitely see why this went the way of the Dodo--way too many openings into the mechanism. The channel was so full of sawdust and crapola it wouldn't move. Luckily, it is easy to disassemble and flush out. It works fine now but definitely won't be a "working" tool for me.

Not many yard sales but the first one was a gem. LOTS of tools, LOTS of good stuff LOTS of unique things! My kind of sale!

Mostly I'll let the pics speak, but this probably generated more potential "whatisits" than any sale I ever bought from... Also some really high quality stuff, if not the bigger names

Early Sockets: 4 Plvmb, 1 Thorsen, 2 Long C Craftsman, Thorsen 1/4" breaker, a Wright extension, Imperial Eastman "Imp" tubing cutter, Stevens Line Level, Brass Tee wrench, Boker and No name Needle nose, a 70th anniversary Craftsman Key-chain fob, Union Too Inside calipers and I got the adjustable jaw on a hunch... More on that later

attachment.php

19th edition MHB (A dupe of the one I bought for a machine shop class...), A mostly complete Chapman set, (missing 4...), A braided wire wheel, A Starrett thread gauge, and a near NOS Panavise. (I've not seen this particular model)

attachment.php

Here is where we get into the Whatisits" (I Know what they are/do... Do you?):
  • Purple handle? (has a blade in the mix)
  • Black cased tool?
  • Bernard pliers? (Purpose...)
  • Alum tool with the 2 wheels?
  • Plate with 5 holes (we have seen these here)
  • Red handled tool?

As well as Thorsen Metric Socket set (missing one...),Craftsman driver bits (Yankee I believe - need to check), Diamond Glaziers pliers, Tin box for tube patch kit, another versatool Ratcheting driver

attachment.php

And at the other yardsale, Vac U grip diagonal cutters, (but No name not SO OR Vac U grip...)

attachment.php

And that Jaw in pic one? My hunch was right! It's for a set of Eiflel Plierwrenches! and not one I had!

The Bernard pliers are probably from a Singer sewing machine repair person. They are used to cut and pierce bulk round drive belt stock to make a sized drive belt that was joined with a steel ring that went through the two pierced ends and was closed up to make the ring after being inserted

I got out today for my first sale all year - and for several months before that. I grabbed this old Holophane light just because I like the style. I have a place all picked out for it, lightening a dark corner. A new C'man rat - and who could resist that cute little Wizard adjustable? Not me. $14 total.
There was also a Columbian bench vise, but smaller than it looked in the photo, pretty rough and overpriced. I passed on it.

A quick cleaning and a clear 100W tungsten bulb and it looks really nice! I can see that the top of the shell has been shortened, cut at the vent holes and brazed back together. It may have originally been built to hold one of those long-necked 150 or 200W bulbs

That's a cable ripper or stripper. Used for stripping the sheathing off something like Romex or the like. Handy tool sometimes.

Gidge,
Is that set-up just for the photo, or do you have a space where you display items with their patent documents? I like the effect.

Outlaw, in post #302, and quoted in post #304, the red-handled lever and the plate with the slots and holes are for bending wire. I think it may be missing some pins.

Outlaw,
(Having waited hours, patiently, for someone else to answer) the plate is for forming wire - I have one or two.
The Vacuum-Grip dikes...I wonder if they might be stamped but very lightly...nothing on the inside of the handles, either? I wonder if they could be old enough to be from NJ instead of PA, because they're too old to be from later Snap-on plants, right? Very nice.

Ha ha ha ... It took me too long to word my speculation on the dikes, and you beat me to identifying the plate! That has to be one of the longest head-starts I’ve ever lost with - I saw Outlaw’s post minutes after he posted it and knew what it was immediately.

:lol_hitti And correct! and yes I need to cut some 1/4" stock for the bending pins in the plate.

LS, an engine show in January in PA? Nice. What better way to power through the winter.

This weekend was the Flywheelers swap meet in Florida. What an event! There is so much there to take in, it’s just massive there.

The day started by waking up 2 hours later than planned because I managed to not set the alarm to Saturday. Although I had a long drive to the show, still made it there early enough for a great day.

Last night I’d made up my mind I was going, and contacted Provincial, who put the word out that he’d be visiting Florida.

Cbacres and Shortykorte were there selling this weekend, and it was a nice opportunity for all to meet up. Always great to see the guys, and they had a nice setup at their stand. Shorty’s friend Ed, another member of the crew was there, and it was nice to meet him as well.

While I was out looking for Provincial ;) (not stopped at a table of tools, I swear) , based on their clothing description, he found me first. I think the new secret password should be “Are you a tool collector”, which is what he asked. It was geat to meet Mr. and Mrs Provincial, I know they came a long way to be there after just traveling to FL from Oregon.

It just so happened that the booth we ended up meeting at belonged to none other than GJ member Jwitt! I’d just learned his identity while talking some good tool talk with him. Jwitt had some good stuff out there and it was a surprise meeting. We and the Provincials had some fun conversation, if only there was more time in a day, but that’s alright, I don’t need to chew everyone’s ear off when there is so much going on.

Other than members, I met and some ******** tool dealers and collectors. Some big guns are definitely out there doing this show. The inventory these people bring out is quite impressive. One tool vendor/collector and I talked for probably near an hour. He had some great tools for sale and some special pieces to show. It’s nice to meet nice folks in the hobby who appreciate some of the same things.

Hoping tomorrow I can share some pictures of my finds. There were a few unexpected items. Also had one first today, found my first “in the wild” flex head speeder, purchased from none other than Jwitt, before I even learned his identity.

Over all what a swap meet. Hoping to get back next month with more time and enjoy the exhibits as well.

Re: post 304:

Outlaw, the whatzit green handled green jawed pliers are for cutting glass.

After scoring the line, squeeze the pliers across it - seen end on the jaws are curved. That applies a bending force in line with the score and allows you to advance the break slowly in a controlled manner. Mostly used for art glass / stained glass making curved cuts. Works on straight cut window glass too, but not much advantage over other methods.

So I was able to hit a couple of sales on Friday, before getting out of town for the weekend with the wife. Right now, sales of any interest are on the scarce side, but I was able to track some things of interest down.

7/8-14 nf (GTD) die in box, Williams Torqbone 1/4 bit driver, double male 1/2 extension I am pretty sure its Duro), Irwin woodie, two combo square blades (one stainless and both metric and fractional, the other a P&C) small sheeve pully, Mercedes badge, unmarked driver with a nice handle, and a Plomb 1-1/8 socket. All of that is sitting on a Heritage era wooden t&d box. The box was missing the metal badge on the front, which I why it was still at the sale probably, but I have one of the right size that I rescued from a rusted out toolbox.

Now, to talk to wife into going to a local flea market...
