Thanks, Guys. I dumped out some nasty old oil that had been sitting inside for years. It won’t be getting any more use by me!

I found some Heritage and long C tools at an estate sale yesterday. The 1/4” drive set is Circle H and just missing a few pieces. Looks like a keeper to me. The leather handled carry box makes a good storage spot for my long C tools some of which I obviously need to downsize some more. The long C vise went to Shiftless.

This little box followed me home on Friday:

I haven't cleaned it as the decal is pretty fragile looking. Not sure what it was for, but it is clean and red inside.

That’s interesting that it is red inside. I found this partial set back in 2018. The box had a red interior and it didn’t look like a repaint. I guess it came that way. It looks like the last picture now.

Long time lurker, picked this guy up at an estate sale this weekend for $35. Gonna work great for all the tooling for my Heritage logo'd 101.07403 Atlas/Craftsman lathe. The box's badges are pristine. :D Felt ain't bad either after vacuuming.

Also picked up a bandsaw for $50 (with two good motors and that block grinder behind it with stand for $100 total), to replace my existing project bandsaw that's missing too many parts. This one is complete and runs great. :)

Edit to fix pics.

Great snags Tex. I've been running one of those bandsaws for years and love it. Machinist's box in great shape, the grinder has the pedestal base. You ****! (that's a compliment around here).

I need some help figuring out what I am missing from my new Heritage 1/4” drive set. The set has all 6 point and 8 point sockets. I seem to be missing the 5/16” socket but I’m not sure exactly what was included in the set. My guess is that it could be from around ‘45 or ‘46. The ‘42 catalog shows some 12 point sockets. All the pieces are Circle H so I think that they are original to the set.

After a little more looking I think I see all the Heritage pieces I picked up at Saturday’s sale in the 1948 Craftsman catalog. It looks like they were selling off the old NB stuff along with the new MDF tools that year. I may have seen the matching 1/2” drive ratchet as well and stupidly left it behind. It looks as if the Heritage carry box shows a leather handle in the catalog image. I guess I’m missing the circle H 1/4” drive short extension along with the 6 point 5/16” circle H socket, if anybody might have extras of those two items.

The 1/4" drive set in the clam shell box was introduced in 1945 and was available at least through 1948 in the catalogs. The same box was used for NB, Plomb, and MDF made tools. I have sets of all the aforementioned in the same boxes. Here's the first ad for that set in 1945.

Thanks, Brian. That’s very helpful. I was unable to find any intervening catalogs online between ‘42 and ‘48. I thought of you when I found this Craftsman reamer on Saturday. It’s available if you want a second one.

I think a trade is in order! I'll look through my stock to see if I can fill in the gaps on your newly acquired set. If there are other NB made sockets you need of other drive sizes, make a list and pm or email it to me.

Brian,
That sounds great. My missing 1/4” drive circle H pieces would be very helpful if you have extras. For some reason I seem to find more BE tools around here.

Don, that's one of my favorite post-war carry boxes and one of the first catalog sets I put together when the bug bit me. I have a 1/4"d 6pt 5/16 in Circle H if you need it but not the short extension. Let me know if it needs to work its way to you.

Thanks, JoCo. I appreciate that. I’ll definitely let you know. Thanks for the offer. I suspect that the previous owner bought the entire set new. The set had a =v= short extension when I got it so it might have been a warranty replacement. The sale was kind of a honey hole of early Sears stuff.

Thanks to Mr Riley, my new 1/4” drive Circle H set is now complete. I’m really happy that it came with the crossbar.

JoCo,

Would you be able to get the dimensions on the tray in that box? I found a tray a while back with a bunch of S-K sockets in it that is gray. It doesn't seem to be the right size for S-K boxes, but it has the same tapered-style handle.

Edit: I just noticed it doesnt have the small socket holder like mine does. The mystery continues... 20200101_120139.jpg20200103_124025.jpg20200103_124040.jpeg

I've seen that tray with the duel socket trays before but I can't put my finger on it. I'll pull measurements and look at my other boxes tomorrow Galaxy. There's an eighth inch of snow on the ground here in NC right now and I'm trapped in the house.

I'm completely exhausted. It has been ~23 hours since I left Portland for Missoula, Montana. I returned an hour ago with these:

Craftsman Mechanics' wall hanging cabinet

And ...

Craftsman Deluxe 5 drawer rolling cabinet.

Scott found these on FB Marketplace (what were you looking in Montana for?!?) and posted a comment in the FB Craftsman Collector group. I took one look, and immediately contacted the seller. We worked out a deal and on the first snow-free weekend, I drove 1127.3 miles round trip to pick them up.

BTW - crossing the western Rockies in winter, regardless of how long it has been since the last snowfall, is treacherous in the morning! But the mighty Camry came through yet again.

Very nice vintage Craftsman scores Brian...love that 5 drawer roller. You also get tons of extra points for that lengthy road trip. Looks like you made the epic run solo too. Co-pilots are pretty scarce for that kind of journey. Ed.

It's a good thing you're not into really large, industrial lathes Brian! As I said on the other thread, I often set my search engine for locations ridiculously out of my reach as I scour the globe for a particular carry box (that could be mailed if I find it). I'd have driven that far for the 5d roller alone, the wall cabinet was icing on the cake!

Sorry I've been remiss in getting back to you. I knew I'd seen that tray configuration before. The light bulb came on in my senile mind today and I realized it's one I see almost every day. This tray came to me in a 1955 Heritage 2 drawer chest and now resides in an older 3d chest for my dupes. Measures 19x7.5 inches. At some point the trays changed from gray to red. I suspect it was around 54 or 55 when they went from crinkle gray exteriors for the boxes to the hammered gray.

Here's a 50' tape measure I picked up today.

Also, if anyone needs a small box I found an empty one. Pics below. I'll snag it and send it out if anyone wants/needs it. It has wrinkled paint with red letter. The inside was open besides on small strip for sockets. 20200303_163140.jpg20200303_163146.jpg20200303_163208.jpeg20200303_163258.jpeg20200303_163255.jpeg20200303_123314.jpeg

Here is a Heritage carry box I found yesterday that I just couldn’t say no to. It was more than I wanted to pay but the condition won me over. I meant to get some better pictures of it today but didn’t get around to it.

Curious of the box in the middle is really "a thing" (maybe a rolling base less wheels?) of possible some sort of franken-case?

It's a modified 3d roller that appears to have been chopped off at the knees. The gap above the top drawer is for the front cover, which folds up and fits into that spot. There is such a thing as a middle chest, but it was shown in the catalogs for one year only (1958) and is quite rare.

Thanks Brian....he wanted $75 for the whole shooting match, but it just seemed to me that the two-drawer chest was the only original component to the stack (The Snap-On base appears as brush painted!) so I choose not to be baited by the low price. I have too much **** laying around anyway.
