Coming from you I really appreciate the the complement, I've seen your work. I'm a huge fan of your stands and it was difficult to do something you haven't already done. I really want to copy your helix someday but, I just don't have the time.
Thank you!

Thanks,
Dreaming up fresh design is challenging, but oh so rewarding when it hits the mark, like yours.
I'll say it again, well done.
The helix was interesting, fun to lay out and build, other than all the finish grinding.

Hollands 93

Davethorik,
Here some pics of the Hollands 93, you requested.
I'm glad you did, It is really neat and I never miss a chance to show it off!
I was mistaken thinking it had 4" jaws, they are 4-1/2"

Awesome! Thanks royce. That looks like a slightly newer version of my no. 90. These are classy vises

You bet Dave,
I would be interested in knowing the vintage of the 93.

Nice little bulldog Smitty

Reminds me of the first vise (a Prentiss bulldog) I ever bought after joining GJ. Promptly stripped it and painted it black. Here it is.

“A guy never forgets his first...uh...Prentiss”

I believe if a manufacturer warrantied them, they'd be date stamped OR the secret would be the model number. The problem is finding a manufacturers catalog listing the number u have AND knowing the date of the catalog. Nice vice royce!

Nice Prentiss 212 Smitty, look forward to seeing the next one that brings you over the top.

Royce, when you have time, throw the 93 Hollands on a scale and then measure the square slider for max opening so I can add the spec:s to the spreadsheet. Thanks in advance, awesome vise.

Columbian 504.This one was a first for me. My first fixed base vise as well as my first vise with smooth jaws. Let me tell you, trying to grind out some of the damage to the top of the jaws was not easy! That is some hard steel.

I think this one is going to get rotated into use for me. I forgot to take a before picture but it was in pretty good shape. It had some pretty large grinding marks on the front and back of the jaw towers. I used to be pretty indifferent to the Columbian vises. For whatever reason they don't seem to be listed for as much money as the other brands on CL. Now it's become one of my favorites. Some of you may recognize the paint theme

So here it is, the straw that broke the camels back. Reed vise no. 302. The vise has 2” jaws and weighs in at 13 Lbs. The vise is shown in as found condition but I think I can get the jaw to swivel. af721d95cb60548dc78ee1d6af59a421.jpgf2055bc559ac0eda51c166a877e1aa2c.jpg2446f8ceffe39f21fe828533d4a0407f.jpgada38967a6e4c35d8edc7b557902400e.jpge1dab7165adc794c99fbc9f55acaddf5.jpg

Great find, Smitty. Absolutely fabulous. We're all very jealous. And congrats on 10K lbs, that's quite an accomplishment.

Hey guys, thanks for all the kind words. Half of the fun of collecting vintage vises is being able to share my finds with the crew at Garage Journal. Finding a rare vise and bringing it to the board really makes my day.

Fierljeppen might be able to help you out. I'm sure he will reply later today.

davethorik...You're way too confident in my database, especially Hollands Mfg. With that said, I think we can narrow it down.

royce...I think the coachmakers' offset vise was an original model for Hollands Mfg. I found an 1894 ad with the offset coachmaker' vise with the same specs but no model no. listed. A 1902 ad lists the no.90 with a meatball spindle, while later ads show the no.90 with a cylindrical spindle.

Sometime around 1907, I believe Hollands changed the no.90 to no.93, before making the final change to no.94-1/4 in 1917. I believe you could confirm this if you can find someone with a 1913 Hollands catalog No 22. It's an awesome vise!

Smitty...I don't care how much you paid for that vise, you ****!!!

Va, the front end of that Wilton looked pretty worked. I’m surprised it went that high.
