Hey Gang, My garage doors are starting to show their age (15 yrs) and I wondering what could be done to freshen them up. The insulation is yellowing and they have stains from bugs and mold. Can these be painted? I don't want to add any weight to these if I can help it...
These pics are after cleaning with bleach and water.

I have the same doors and asked the same question a while back.

Consensus was that they cant be painted...I think. I haven't looked at the thread in a while.

I did slip a piece of aluminum flashing/trim in one of them just to see if it was doable, but didn't go any further. That still leaves the frame of each panel that ****** white color.

EDIT: here it is, https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=417354

My door had yellowed and looked back also. I went to Menards and bought 4X8 sheets of thin 1/8 in. vinyl sheets. Cannot remember the actual name. It was $19 a sheet. Cut with a utility knife. Easy to work with. I put installed it right over existing cover. I did spray the panel(door) with spray adhesive first. Really turned out nice, I think.

Same issue was happening at my mothers house, they cant be painted. At least not without a lot of prep. Id do what Dodge did and repanel with vinyl sheet.

Thanks for the compliments guys. It took about 4 hours to do, but was well worth the time and money. Brightened my garage up inside. Nice thing about the vinyl is it bends, able to tuck it in place like it came that way. Should clean easy also. Some one suggested white coil stock, but trying to bend that to tuck in would put creases it it. I was going to replace my door, $1100, this was a much cheaper solution!!

Not a solution for the OP but this is why I like doors with metal on both sides. Not as thermally efficient (unless you get the REALLY good ones with thermal break) but no exposed insulation.

It was an upcharge for the all metal doors for me, and they were the most efficient (R-17.19) and like you I prefer them because they are easy to wipe down and look nice. I have washed mine with a hose and a car brush.

Check out dubbers new build and he painted his black on the inside and it does look sharp, not sure if he had vinyl or steel interior. I do like what dodge did with his. If you were into making them all white one could paint the galvanized parts and then install the new panels. Just a thought.

A good latex paint will cover them. I've painted mine twice. Original white, to maroon, back to white, and never had the first problem.

Have you seen the 'new' Easyriders magazine? Very different from the Paisano Publications original. And, that price!

Just looked at their webpage and their price is high for a single issue but if they have no ads in there its great and one would hope that that leads to good and unbiased journalism.

That's kind of what I've been envisioning doing. Anyone have a source for similar material other than Menards?

Thanks. Now I remember why I didn't pursue that option...the panels in my garage doors are 50" wide so I can only get 2 out of a 4x8 sheet. Have to see if I can get a 9 or 10ft panel somewhere.

I have the same problem. Panels on one door are too wide to use a 4x8 sheet efficiently.
I was priming some drywall repairs so I painted one of the panels with the leftover primer. Big improvement so I am going to proceed down that route. maybe a dark grey...
