Funny how some days go !
I picked up the small hatchet and ax head at one sale, a little later I came across these 2 sheaths, had to grab them.
Need to work a little oil into the sheaths to loosen them up and clean up the heads,
Brian

Looks like you’re all set to do some ring and valve jobs on some early motors! What size is the S-K Chrome socket? I have several.
We went to a tool sale in Santa Rosa, CA this morning. There were quite a few wrenches of various brands and a Powr-Kraft carry box. On the trip home we spotted an estate sale sign near Sonoma State College and picked up a few more items including five US canteen cans.

That p&c adjustable looks early. Well done.

I hit a few sales this AM. I found an untouched Briggs & Stratton Service and Repair Instructions manual for $2. Inside the manual was the 1985 invoice for the manual from a local B&S dealer for $8.62 shipped.

Cheers

Jim

I have that same manual, I bought mine new sometime in the early 1980s. :)

Ahhh logistics.
I spotted three sales that looked good this week. Two were pretty close to home, the third 30 miles. Two started at 9AM, but the most promising didn't start til 10AM. I didn't see any way I could go to the nearest at 9, check things out and then get to the 10AM some reasonable time before opening - oh, and it was one-day sale. I decided to get to the 10AM good and early and worry about the others later. I showed up a full hour early, and still was only the 9th!! As it happened, none of the lots I was interested in had been snapped up by any of the 8 who beat me through the door. Easy to see why-prices were sky-high. One thing I wanted was some larger combos. A set of 4 Crafties was priced at $30! They said they'd negotiate, and everything was half price after 1:30. I said, fine, give me that half price now. Nope, and actually I'm glad - that would have too much too!
On to the next one, now nearly two hours after opening. First thing to catch my eye was this little red box full of what looked like Indestro sockets. Closer look revealed mostly Wizard! For $5? Yeah, I can do that. Then I picked it up and it seemed way too heavy - turned out what I had thought was the lid was actually another nearly identical box sitting in the first one's lid, and also full of sockets, Indestro, Wizard, Thorsen, nearly all American. Too good to be true sez I, but carefully inspecting revealed only the one price tag for the two nested boxes. What I was actually looking for was some larger combos, so I continued shopping and found three of the ubiquitous Craftsman flip top + tray tool boxes. Two of them had an assortment of tools in the tray, and a bunch more on the table in front. All of the tools on the table were individually priced. The third one is pictured here - no individual prices. Yeah, too good to be true, so I hunted up a sale worker and pointed this out - asked, are all these unmarked wrenches supposed to go with this box? He lifted the tray out, bottom was empty, said yup, it all goes together.
Works for me - and of course who could resist 3" Brink&Cotton c-clamps for $1 each?
I haven't gone through it carefully yet but it looks like about 2/3 of the wrenches are USA, and nearly all the sockets are Crafty.
THEN I went on to the third sale, hoping to get the Carter Carburetor box Lugz was interested in.

The third sale was more of a hike, but I was intriged by the Carter Carburetor box I posted about earlier. I figured if Lugz didn't want it, I wouldn't mind having it hanging around my place. Alas, by the time I got there it was three hours past opening and the box was gone. Of course, I was duty-bound to see what else was there - a lot of rusty **** and just plain trash, but some interesting things, like a large (10-ream paper size) box with several inches of sockets. Probably ****, I thought, but when I dug around a bit I found quite a few S-K's and Indestro, Craftsman, etc.. For $10 I had to have it. Turned out to weigh 34 lbs!
I haven't fully sorted it out, but so far I have 20 lbs of USA sockets, 11 lbs of decent China, Taiwan, etc., and 8 lbs of utter **** - broken, rusted out, scrap.
I've pictured the USA stuff, sorted by drive size.

There's a fair amount of rust even on the good stuff, so I'm thinking about giving Evaporust another try. The E-Tank would be really, really tedious for so many small pieces.

BFBOB,
I was somewhat disappointed with Evaporust until I put it in a slow cooker at “keep warm” setting. I’ve read conflicting statements on the efficacy of temperature, but my limited experience convinces me that a week at 50° does nothing at all, while three hours at 150° does wonders. The directions for derusting automotive cooling systems certainly suggest that it CAN be used above normal air temperatures.
Experimentally, I’ve diluted it, reduced it to the consistency of molasses, and reconstituted it, all with little effect on its performance. I have NOT boiled it, and because of its viscosity, I don’t intend to.

So I finally get to hit an estate sale this year when I found that a shade tree mechanic type shop is involved. This fella had a lot of old school stick welders, some bigger then me! But I'm happy with my little craftsman sticker welder at the moment so I didnt mess with them. One thing I messed up on was I should of showed up at 7am cause the sale wasn't supposed to happen till 9am but when I showed up at 8:10am there was people already there making piles. Which made me a little upset cause I was looking for the atlas battery charger that I saw in the pic and it was already sold. :(

So I started poking around and I found an old black and decker 7" grinder, these things are big deals in the welding world and I've always wanted one. Then right beside it i found the 7" craftsman polisher! So i picked them up and grabbed the sand papers that was with them. Then I found the chevy truck guages on some other shelves. Eventually I dug through some buckets to turn up the rest of the stuff.

Williams 13" c clamp, just got it cause I've never seen one so big, 5 cans of starting fluid, guage cluster for 67-72 chevy trucks, 7" craftman polisher, 7"/9" black and decker grinder, mirrors, bungee cords, spintites screwdriver holder, snap on ball peen hammer bp-240, and a spark protector cutting glasses.

20200222_111353.jpg

Spintites holder, anyone wants this? I dont have any spintites for this holder.

20200222_112016.jpg

Odd pliers, i have already used them and they are pretty handy.

20200222_112708.jpg

13" William's C Clamp, it needs to get cleaned up and get the screw freed up, but I never seen one this big in the wild!

20200222_113350.jpg

So all of that for $45 and the grinder does work but i need to replace the cord on the black and decker unit. I'll also go through and clean the grease and reapply new grease on the gear.

The pre-war Kennedy hip-roof cantilevered toolbox is no routine pre-war Kennedy box. It has coolass stickers all over it on the other side, the ends, and the inside. I am definitely starting a thread. Mentioning it first, before the WWII fighting knife, should tell you how excited I am about it. You wouldn't believe what I paid if I told you. The seller, a liquidator, pitching me as I tried to look disinterested, told me in broken English that I could use it for feeshing. He had no clue about the box or the name and the stickers meant nothing to him.

The Nazi sticker is an E.G. Waterman with original sheath. If you know edged weapons, it is highly revered, especially this version with the stacked leather washer handle and the 7-3/8" blade, which is immaculate, with a keen edge. Worth 9 x more than what I paid.

The 'Bell Telephone' toy truck is a Hubley. Also a deal, but I paid quite a bit, which brought my karma back into calibration for the first two purchases. Will add some class to my Bell System collection shelf.

I've been looking for a mirror for my Craftsman machinists' box project. It's supposed to be square, on corners, but I may go round instead, just to be different.

The awl, if that's what it is, is a "YANKEE", assuming North Bros.

No idea on the spoons. The business ends are super thin and the handles are super heavy. For leatherworking? Tin smithing? I will post photos here for ID help.

No markings on the curving shears either.

The DOE obstruction wrench is Herbrand. The other one is a BHM Hybar.

And a tiny ratcheting screwdriver I grabbed because of the interesting design and previously never seen before name ("WRAP LOCK").

Around here, the pro's are pretty rigid about starting times. Once I walked in the front door about 15 minutes early and stood right there. Honest, mr sales, I was just getting out of the cold and rain, I'm not shopping! He threw me out anyway. Today, at a sale where they weren't handing out numbers, a group started gathering about 15 minutes before opening (and I was second!) Manager made noises about letting us in early (not that anyone actually asked), but managed to keep busy with setting up unitil official start time. Probably just being diplomatic.
The one time I got in early was quite by accident I showed up the previous day. One of the familly answered the door, told me I was early. Well, gee, sorry about that, but I'm here, you're here, you've got stuff, I've got money, and I only want to see the garage. She let me in and I got a really good deal on a vise - paid asking price and all.

If it’s less than 60 degrees in my (unheated, uninsulated) garage, I use Evaporust in my old crockpot set on warm. Works great. I keep reusing it even though it’s black. I’ll keep using my same 2 gallon stash until it will no longer do the job.
Once I put it on high to get a quick start and forgot about it for about 8 hours. No harm done.

My latest derusting project was a dozen pruners that belong to a friend with a 3 acre garden who has volunteer help. Tool maintenance is not something they do.

Glad to see you guys are having fun.

Lugz, sounds like you stole those couple items. As a guy who once paid $2 for a WWII Kabar, I can appreciate a good knife deal.

Madison, nice to see you . I thought of you the other day as I used my Wera screwdrivers to change out the thermostat and DVOM batteries. Love those drivers.:)

BFBOB, endless estate sale stories here, but you reminded me of a sale a few years ago. I thought it opened at 9 like most. Got there late (so I thought) at 9:45. The door was wide open, and no crowd out front, only one man talking outside on his cell. I walked in, headed straight to the garage and starting making a pile. Found the Snap On ratchet I had seen in photos, and other things. Two workers heard me jingling the tools and came rushing in the garage. One guy says “What are you doing? We’re not open yet”. They looked quite angry and I didn’t know these sellers. I apologized and was a bit embarrassed as I was escorted out. When the sale opened 15 minutes later at 10, there was suddenly a line of people. I went straight back to the garage where one of the workers had left my pile under the table.

That's my hat. I wore that. Sundays are hat and cigar day at this flea market. It's been that way forever. I have a few of them - all from flea markets. Usually I get "Rocky" comments, but I am a big Honeymooners fan! :)

Yup, you got the allusion to the rule around here.

I had a reverse-suckage day at Quakertown flea. I thought I had paid too much for the 4” crowntop Craftsman 5183. Now I know for sure. I looked it over twice and still failed to see the hairline cracks in the static tower until I got it home. MrsLS suggested driving back, but even if the unknown-to-me vendor was still there...I’m too mad at myself to try.
I will seek further advice on the vise repair thread, but I think I will be parting it out to offset my own stupidity.
The rest of the purchases were from a vendor I DO know, and no regrets. A clutch of Bonney, a couple pieces of Plomb, Indestro, a 1933 BluePoint DBE, unmarked cotter pin tool, ODgreen level/square head, Wilde pliers, 6” Greenfield Tap & Die Stillson adjustable, and a no1 Masterlock w original chain and lion key.

Yeah, I've seen your hats in many of your pick pics. Finally couldn't resist. I'm waiting on the new thread on the Kennedy box. Wanna see the rest of the box and read more details.

Still can't believe we have a vintage "Axes" thread, but not a vintage "Knives" thread.

Picked up a few ratchets at Flywheelers yesterday. Sure did a run on 1/2”, and found three of the 3/8 just before leaving. Some ratchets need a little work and bought cheap, a few I paid up for.

1/2” Beta, Wright, Penens, Craftsman BT, Gray,
Williams ST-50, PowrKraft, Giller, Blue Grass, Mossberg ratcheting adapter, Williams Plug

3/8” Vlchek, Indestro, PowrKraft quick release, Mac, Cam-Loc with 3/8 insert.

1/2 Defiance L Handle (altered end sadly), 1/2 Craftsman L handle

Random sockets. The bottom group were 5/1.00. They had hundreds of Craftsman and USA sockets all five for a buck! Unheard of. I felt a bit overwhelmed around that time. :) Had to choose just a few.

Misc.: Mack valve lifter tool, Bonney pliers, Snap On punch, Blue Point screw starter/magnet, Vlcheck pliers, Matco screwdriver, Indestro alligator wrench, and a puller leg.

Proto mallet, and a great big JH Williams Brooklyn-Buffalo curved wrench I just had to have.

I did and everything is coming up looking nothing like what I have. I would not be disappointed! I am a blue crab guy (including permanent trap licenses), but oyster knives would be cool. Did you see what they weigh? Post some links.

I'll give you three hints on the Kennedy box. Which I am about to post. Consider it a pop quiz to clear the old cobwebs. :)

(1) You have seen one of these before.
(2) 2017.
(3) Plumbing.

Ever since she spotted a partial set of Corelle dishes that match our partial set on Friday, she has been agonizing whether to pick them up. Today was the last day of the sale and it turned out to be half price day so she grabbed them since they were still there. While we were there I thought it might be a good idea to re-check the garage to see if anything worthwhile remained and I found a few things I missed on Friday. The complete auger bit set was unused Dunlap. The Xcelite nutdriver set cleaned up pretty well. I always need socket racks and the two Hazet DOE wrenches are for my neighbor.

Just got back, but HAVE to start with another USUCK to a certain guy from Nantucket who DID....

Lugz - START that Vintage Knife thread! I can get behind that!

Too many others to list, But I sure wish That Spintite tray was posted later so I had a shot at a PM! I can fill that sucker!

While I was camping, it was with the some of Coleman crew, and WE worked on stove an lanterns and I did buy a Prop tank I'll post after I take pics. I need to figure out how much this holds but its da bomb! ;)

I also managed to stop at a TOO yard sale on the way home and picked up a No. 3 cast iron Fry pan, that I'm 95% certain is a Wagner -0- Sydney... (very similar quality to Grsiwold)
