JBL: i've used TREX for cement forms when I planned on leaving them in the ground cause wood will rot eventually even treated wood.

I like the sound of having a bunch of vise, grinder and other tool holders AND with all the motorized stuff you own having plenty of pull points would be great cause you never know when one might be sitting on the spot you had while it's waiting for parts.

hope you are getting warmer.

cheers
Trex isn't a bad idea actually .... I think I have some plastic type stuff that can be used laying around somewhere lol.

I also think it's a good idea and even if they never get used (unlikely) it's way easier to put them in the concrete now than later !!

It's supposed to be 49F here today .... gonna feel like we're in the jungle !!!

Its not a real complicated design right?

Remaking it out of steel is an interesting idea .... hmmmm ...

No it's not but it's going to stay cast after talking to someone that remade their's out of steel and ended up twisting their frame when their axle snapped. I do not anticipate another rear axle failure but I sure do not want a twisted frame because of it. I'd MUCH rather bust another one of these blocks .....

I've got kind of a mixed up mess of a post this time but I think we're all mixed up enough to follow along just fine :lol_hitti

Well look at that !! First of it's kind super secret (only showing it to my fellow GJ'ers out of respect) BRUSHLESS Ryobi spot light !! It's super bright, uses way less power than it's non-brushless (but nearly identical) counterpart and it was the same price as the non-brushless model !!
49649467118_c00c9f40ba_z.jpg

This was my very first camera install and boy oh boy have I come a long way since this !!!
49649467203_2b32dcf18a_z.jpg

The NanoStation that connects this area to the main barn wasn't coming back online for some reason so I had to go open the box up and plug in. A simple restart of the equipment was all it took to make it happy happy happy again :)
49650281872_18c8a42926_z.jpg

That evening for dinner we had tacos and Alyssa's kept falling apart so I chip-clipped it together and it worked very well !!
49650004686_a3f134f281_z.jpg

Annnnnd then the chickens left and I got to start cleaning the barn out. Whoo hoo !! Barn cleaning is fun !! Sort of. Better than a poke in the eye with a stick :lol_hitti
49650283337_9baf46b53e_z.jpg

It started snowing for a bit then it got up to 45F and made a muddy mess. It took an hour to get the housekeeper and tractor clean again !!
49650004956_f1b6938379_z.jpg

Next up was to replace the cloudy hydraulic sight glass on the 7810.
49649468118_7a2efc5056_z.jpg

New one is on and it sure looks like we had too much oil in it as it's running out the top hole :headscrat
49650282912_6e0efcec57_z.jpg

Engine oil is changed and I got it all washed up and purrdy
49649468288_716347399f_z.jpg

It might be time for some new tires one of these years .....
49650006671_9526424acd_z.jpg

The 7810 had a date with the John Deere dealer and they wanted something silly like $4/mile to haul it so I drove it into town. I may have gotten hungry on the way :bounce:
49649466918_5057055b2f_z.jpg

We took some time off and went bowling with a few of my co-workers. A few of us needed fun names. Well really it was just Pete that needed a fun name :lol_hitti
49650005786_1ecfdc5903_z.jpg

The steers got to read all of our junk mail and wanted to poop on it all eventually. It's junk mail so I understand
49649467718_314881c8ff_z.jpg

Dad and I got the gearboxes for the curtains on the new barn installed so they can open up when it gets warm.
49649467928_f2498bc031_z.jpg

We serviced the 7630. Oil change, air filters and some other misc. Things are moving along towards spring !!!
49650006381_0efae9a0e2_z.jpg

The well is still overflowing .....
49650006801_9fb124e7ac_z.jpg

Dad's primary computer turned 20yrs old and he decided it was time to update. I typed papers on this ol' girl back in High School around 2000 :wtf:
49649468513_657d033fdc_z.jpg

Snappy fast Mac Mini, 24" monitor and a freebie Dell keyboard/mouse are a MAJOR update !!!!
49650283307_f0c3c8464f_z.jpg

Grrrrawarrrr it seems I got a little rammy when I was pushing snow this winter
49650281782_5171050921_z.jpg

And then it snowed 4" in a few hours yesterday. Will it ever end aaaaaahhhhhh ?!?!?!?
49650004801_7226bdc0e5_z.jpg

It got up to 40ish today and the snow disappeared mostly so Dad and I went to get a brand new Crary Tile cart and the first of many rolls of tile to go on it. There are a few other additions to the machinery stable coming soon as well :bounce:

Well, it only takes replacing a culvert once to make you mark it with a boulder or a post for the next year. You like to learn the hard way I see...

Id agree its time for tires on the 7810. Won't be much good in the field, you'll have to relegate it to highway duties instead lol. CliftonBros just grabbed some new ones for their Deere.

Im glad you're getting the snow and not me, but dang, its been 50s and even some 60s here for the last week or two. No snow in sight, and its looking like a clear shot into spring so far.

The one I used to plow with ran about 25mph, powershift trans. I loved running that tractor. Dealer drove it down the road to deliver to customer in southern NY to just over the border in NJ, about 40 miles from dealer to farm.

Yeah. I got a bit bully with the new snow bucket it seems ... oh well. No major damage so it'll stay.

The tires have been "shot" on the 7810 for a few years now but it is mainly a baler, rock roller, and gravity box hauler so bald tires are pretty nice for all those activities !!

Yeah .... you and your weather can kiss my grits !!!

They wanted $600 to haul nephew's Steiger, he drove it as well. Don't know how far it was but it took him 2 hours, one way :)
I work with a guy that drove a tractor from Central Iowa to Central MN when he bought it on a whim at an auction. He has a little pickup with a hitch on it so he pulled his pickup home. Good grief !!!

What's highway cruising speed on that 7810?

The cows chewing the junk mail was good for a chuckle. :D
She rolls along right around 25.9 MPH on the flat and level. 20.8r42's give her a bit of a bump over 18.4r42's like a few neighbors have

I love this 19spd trans. Shift smooth (mostly) and has been relatively trouble free for now.

40 miles from dealer to farm is a good hike in a tractor !!!

Last Friday I got to help unload three Lely A5 Robots for a dairy we'll be installing them at mid May. I was picked to run the telehandler because well, I was the only one on the team that wanted too. What a nice rig !! It was a nice change from the regular stuff at work
49667328943_444489e69f_b.jpg

Robots have landed and the Lely Vector (robotic TMR feeding robot) is the last to come off. In total we unloaded nearly $1Million dollars of stuff with ZERO issues
49667871891_554b0cce21_b.jpg

Saturday Dad and I began disassembling one of the sheds in the way for building a new house and we all know how important it is to keep the MRS in your live happy !!!
49668157407_82239c23e7_b.jpg

I'd say good progress was made. If anyone wants some old faded tin I'm sure we can work something out. I want to scrap it and she wants to do something called "repurpose" it. I want to as well I just want it melted down and turned into a new tractor, not into something I'll have to look at forever in my living room !!!
49668157352_6773371ed8_b.jpg

Sunday Dad fired the stirrators up in the old drying bin to get the 21% moisture corn we're feeding the steers to stir up a little as it's warmer out and we don't need issues. Well one of them didn't want to go and blew up it's belt.
49668157502_6fb2857f61_b.jpg

Not sure if you can see it but the top bearing is GONE. Totally gone. Good grief !!!
49667329313_d853a05e09_b.jpg

I sold my first ever semi load of cattle and needed to clean up the loading chute as it was all icy. No need for the cattle to slip around so I put 100lbs of salt down to melt the ice. It ended up working VERY well !!
49668157587_9f86355a35_b.jpg

There they go !!! 32 fat cattle headed to market. Mmmmm tasty
49667872086_be8d41b6b0_b.jpg

So. First of all ... this is NOT my mess !! This was created by the head internal IT guy at the place I work. FOR SHAME !!!

JBL: best of luck on the new home build and I bet you'll like it as much or more as your wife and kids cause you won't have to fix something when you get done with your day at work or on the farm.

congrats on the sale of your steers and guessing you are going to buy more soon.

the metal siding makes great raised bed gardens if you might want to upgrade your old plastic in metal cages on pallets look. wood framed and they should hold in the dirt and your good food for many many years.

It finally quit raining here for a couple days so hope you get some decent weather soon.

Often times certain devices when not bought in bulk come with those silly injectors in the box, ubiquiti for example. In that case, $Free is in fact cheaper ;)

I hope it all works out to build summer of 21' and hope the BS going on right now doesn't affect things negatively :wtf:

32 steers are gone and the barn feels quite empty. I don't think I'm going to buy more in the near future. The feeder market was oddly higher last week and I don't know why. We'll let things shake out for a few weeks and see what happens.

Mama Bear wants to keep ALL the tin and lumber that looks old so we'll see how much actually sticks around. We sold a few pieces to a neighbor yesterday so the small pile has already gotten smaller

5 port POE switches have to be cheaper than all those injectors

Yeah that is exactly what he did. "Well gee they come with these STUPID little injectors so I don't need to buy a POE switch. Look at all the money we can save !!"

The guy is a Level 4 Master Putz.

Last week I had to go back to Goodwin, SD to replace the PC I just put in because it keeps rebooting on it's own. I've tried a bunch of stuff over the phone with the customer and decided it was time to swap it out. It was raining, snowing, sleeting and foggy ALL the way there and back

Since she's been home from school for the last week I've tried to get Lily involved in as much as I can. No reason that "distance learning" can't include some lessons on how to take care of some cattle :bounce:
49673790702_b14b3fe212_b.jpg

She cranked the top curtain down for me while I taught her why it was important to have adequate ventilation in a barn.

We spent some time in the house on Friday while I worked on my BRAND NEW (to me) Dell Precision 7510 laptop. It was a very sweet score on good ol' flEbay with 64Gb RAM, Xeon E3-1575m, 2Tb M2 NVME, 1Tb SSD, 4Gb M2000M, a docking station and thunderbolt dock. Anyway .... I looked over at Lily playing on her kiddo tablet and she was playing Sonic !! Sweet deal :bounce:
49685647293_0b58164b4a_b.jpg

The combine axle is back !!!!
49686178306_cf46795547_b.jpg

"Beef it up so it doesn't ever break again !!" Lol. Yup I think they accomplished that !!!
49685647023_0b6fc5526e_b.jpg

They did a really nice job on the cast iron block as well.
49685646953_ebb30aa3ff_b.jpg

We had them add in a pair of 3/4" thick plates between the axle stops to add some more strength and one of them stuck out a tad far so I buzzed it off with a Metabo Super Slicer.
49686480592_b2f09fd46f_b.jpg

Every time I use these Super Slicers I'm impressed. The disc I used was already a little worn and this is it against a brand new disc. I was not nice to it while cutting either and it probably took 5 minutes to buzz through that big chunk of iron.
49685647663_b65c6522a1_b.jpg

We got the axle mounted and started on the hubs. We got them both put back on but it was getting cold and dark so I forgot to take a picture. If only we had a nice warm BRIGHTLY lit farm shop ......
49686178741_6a736d0ed8_b.jpg

The newest batch of calves were looking a little down so we decided to bed them with a super nice bale of wheat straw. It's softer and I'd imagine more comfortable than corn straw so it's a bit of a treat for them. The bale we put in there is sale-able for $50 so it's a decent treat for them and the reason we don't use wheat straw all the time. Corn straw is worth about half for a bale that's a little larger than the square wheat bale we put in the pen this time.
49685647253_a5a7585bcc_b.jpg

My Farmall M has been sitting for a while so I drained the gas out it of to keep the carb from getting gummy.
49686481047_7eec78c1e5_b.jpg

As long as I was draining fuel I drained the H out as well. It wasn't running right last summer and is probably due for a carb cleaning so this had to happen anyway.
49685647578_a2fc2d10e3_b.jpg

There is a hard line that goes from the bowl to the carb so this seemed easier than taking it all apart :lol_hitti

In town. They usually feed us from the small diner/bar in town ... also owned by the dairy owners. Nice people, nice dairy and usually a nice drive if it's over 40F lol.

I know they heated it a few times and welded on it and heated it and welded on it and then heated it again and cooled it down and it was quite the process. What they used I have no idea but it looks good. We'll see how well it holds when it ultimately gets abused a little down the road. It's a SPENDY part that ended up in that $150 neighborhood to repair. I call that a WIN !!!

Are you buying a plow to put tile in? What's your soil like, have much trouble with rocks?

Interested to hear how you like the crary cart. We're going to add another one sometime and pretty much decided on a liebrecht.

Next post reveals some more stuff ....

Our soils are all over the board from sandy to HEAVY to clay to gravel and sometimes it's all mixed together. Kinda a major PITA for most everything but we make it work. Trouble with rocks ... hmmm ... yeah I'd say we have a few rocks. Not a lot of HUGE ones but I'm sure we'll find some digging down 3-4' instead of the usual 12-14" lol.

We've pulled that roll of tile home on it and that's it so far. We were after a true walking tandem cart so it seemed to be a Soil Max cart ($9,700) or the Crary cart ($7,200). We shall see. I think we'll end up getting another one in due time but we're gonna start with one.

It seems like ages since I updated this thing but it's only been five days lol. Good grief what a LONG five days it's been. Trying to balance everything that is going on now is causing some pretty intense short term agony and I know I am not alone in that !!! Luckily Mama Bear and I are both in "essential" industries (as are 80% of people in MN lol) so we're still going full steam ahead for now. Our daily routines we've almost perfected over the last few years were thrown out the window inside of two days what with becoming homeschoolers and trying to find bread and milk locally. Just pure crazyness is what it is !!

Anyway .... A nice sunset is always an amazing thing to bring you back to reality a little bit. It's there and it's always beautiful and we need to look for beauty more than ever these days. A nice sunset does that nicely. You can't but help to stare at it and think about all kinds of stuff until it's gone.
49705810358_40f7d6dd56_b.jpg

After dark I got the "new" laptop setup in my work space. Goodness this setup is nice !! Three displays PLUS the laptop display .... I almost dread taking the laptop with me to work and having only it to use !!!
49706665432_2b080da562_b.jpg

Tuesday morning we got 43,000 new little chicks and I figured what better way to distance learn our VERY rambunctious 1st grader than to have her help with the delivery :bounce:
49706345691_8f31ba9014_b.jpg

This is a totally random picture I took to send Mama Bear and while looking at it later I though "Good grief !! When did she turn 7 and get SOOOO BIG !!"
49705810648_e00336e4bd_b.jpg

"Dad can I clean up all the strings and other junky looking stuff on the floor ??" Gosh she's awesome :bounce:

Soilmax Gold Digger Stealth ZD. 4", 6" and 8" boots, tandem wheel kit with Full RTK GPS using Intellislope software on an AgLeader InCommand 1200 monitor. Let the fun begin. The plow is impressive looking but is only half the cost of the whole setup. The GPS equipment to make it all work is almost as spendy as the plow itself !! We ordered three semi loads of tile (35,200' of 4", 1,500' of 6" 1,640' of 8") to pattern tile a 40 acre field for a neighbor and hope to start next week Thursday. We are quite excited to be able to install our own drain tile on our schedules and put it wherever we need it without waiting for a commercial operation to come in and charge an arm and a leg to do some of our silly little fields. Many more pictures will follow this plow around I'm sure !! I'm very open to answer any questions you have surrounding tiling and why we do it and can take photos of anything you'd like down the road. Just for fun ... those are dual 7" cylinders on the top of the plow used to keep it on grade while tiling :wtf:

Protip: before ever going to the field add a 24" extension straight out from your antenna mount so that it's directly above the shear tip. It's absolutely ridiculous that they don't do this from the factory. The difference in grading will be night and day.

Don't know anything about Intellislope since we run Trimble but don't try dialing it in by yourself. Have a competent dealer come out and fine tune the settings+hydraulic flow from the tractor to get it set it.

Here's a pic of showing the extension for the antenna

Gotta spend money to save money I guess. This whole package will be paid off in a few years with the added benefit of having tile in the ground PLUS we'll save a bit by not hiring someone else to do it.

Gotta find something to do with my spare time. Buy a tile plow !!! That's a great idea !!! Seriously though, I love my in town job but hate that I need it so hopefully branching out and diversifying the sources of income on the farm will allow to majorly cut down or be done all together in town one day. Hopefully one day soon (within a few years I guess).

I’m looking forward to the tiling photos and experiences[emoji106]

The guys from Barrett Farm Supply where we purchased it delivered it and we got the Deere 9300 wired up already. They'll be coming out next week to help dial it in and will spend the first day with us getting to learn the system. They've been SUPER good to deal with so far and Jarrod the main sales guy for the plows spend 10+ years tiling himself before coming to work for Barrett so he can talk the talk and seems to be able to walk the walk. Service after the sale means more than having a good piece of hardware and I think we got both with the Gold Digger and the Barrett team.

Image didn't show because it has errors.

I think he's gotta leave off the initial "i." from that link with Imgur.
Naw Garage Journal doesn't seem to play nicely with HTTPS links from Imgur. Got rid of the S in HTTPS and there it is ^^^

Geessh Mike!
Do you know how long 5 D A Y s are when you're suffering from cabin fever?

Seriously thanks for the update, maybe some YouTube videos are on the horizon?
We've not had a shortage of things to do and our daily work load both on the farm and at Leedstone hasn't really changed.

I thought long and hard about spending some $$$$ on a well loaded up Mac Pro to do some video editing and ultimately decided after doing a little dabbling on my Mac Mini that the whole video editing process takes way too much time for the enjoyment I got out of it. I know a faster computer would help tremendously BUT it still takes way too much time to do it daily or weekly like most do. PLUS there are a ton of already great "full time" farming channels out there that I don't think I'd attract enough attention to actually make any money doing it. So that means it'll be done onsie-twosie here and there just for funsies

Probably make some nice tiling videos and maybe a few nice general planting/harvesting/tillage videos but probably not a regularly updated YouTube Channel at this point.

Seems like this is turning into a once a week updating sort of deal. Kind of an online social distancing of sorts I guess ???:headscrat

It was decided to abandon ladders and find something more safer to use whilst taking steel off buildings. It was a very rapid decision I made in the short distance of about 8' from a roof down to the ground. Falling off a roof once is too many times SO I borrowed this from the guy I bought the tile plow with. He's got all kinds of goodies and is a great neighbor to have. He owns the scraper, dozer and a few other things we've used over the years as well.

It lifts WAY higher than we'll need it to but will be really nice to have. The plan is to lift it up where needed and climb up to it with a ladder. It'll be a nice stopping point for us if we slip on the tin while removing nails and stuff so we do not fall all the way to the ground.

While putting the combine axle back together we found a bunch of bolts that had messed up threads so I cleaned up quite a few of them. 3/4" shank x 7" long grade 8 bolts aren't cheap so this was time well spent in my eyes.

Er'ma'garwash that looks nice

Our construction guy Cory and I are starting on another SmartBow project close to home so we had a bunch of pipe to run. I needed to run for a few fittings we fell short on and he took that time to build a real sweet conduit rack for the lift. We're not electricians so if anyone asks this pipe is either for ventilation, waterline or a GIANT hamster playground :lol_hitti

VERY nice Stahlin enclosures. The hamsters will love them !!

I'm not quite sure why but this pen of steers was following me around when I was walking back and forth. Maybe I smelled like some tasty corn or something :headscrat

Week #3 of homeschooling and having Mama Bear around full time is almost finished. This is the strangest thing seeing roads pretty empty, having to order takeout only, not being able to go into the John Deere dealership's building to pick up parts and having to dodge sneezes all over now that allergy season is also in full swing. Once this whole virus scare is over I sure hope people are confident enough to get back to normal. That being said, I don't know that we'll be comfortable doing even the simple normal things like going camping with our big groups or even going to church again.

Change is not always bad in the long run but it sure is putting a lot of people in a pinch in the short term. Having literally the entire world going through the same disaster at the same time really makes you realize how many simple things we take for granted. Never ever before did I think twice about grabbing a doughnut out of the display case at the gas station or grabbing the door handle to a public bathroom but now all those things are suspect even more so.

To all those reading this thank you for doing so and please stay safe and healthy out there. If'fin you're board and want to chat to pass the time I'll have a bunch of tractor time coming up soon and would enjoy getting to know any of you better. We're all in this together and that's how we'll get through it as well. Together.

Glad you and your family are well Mike. We're in much the same boat out here as you but in good health. I'm working from home. It's different and I love the commute.

Take care!

JBL: it's been a while since I stuck my nose in on your thread so yes maybe if you are able to post more often some of us that look forward to our morning farm news won't go without.

good to see you are still moving forward with all this CRAZY WORLD STUFF is what i call it. over here I wouldn't be surprised if our governor doesn't shut off the tap water cause he's shutting down everything else.

I still don't know ONE PERSON that has Corona or whatever they call it this week, but talking to friends and neighbors it seems like Corona or a version of it was around last OCTOBER and only got really noticed here when some people at a nursing home died last month.

anyway yep i'm in for seeing you put tile and drainage in yours and your neighbor's fields so take plenty of pics.

are you taking apart some of the smaller buildings so you can make another big one and make room for your new house?

since my babies are turning 30 in October i can tell you it's a fact that they grow up quick. when we had 3 kids and then had twins (the 30 year olds) it was maybe crazier than this Corona thing here, but we survived so hopefully the government and our American people will too.

good luck and stay healthy!!

So far so good on the well and healthy I guess. Mama Bear is working from home 100% and has been going a bit stir crazy. She is currently in a Zoom meeting with a bunch of her co-workers doing something called a "Zoom Happy Hour" which basically just means they all BS about work and drink boooooooze.

Read this while trying to sound like Dan Aykroyd. It's way much better that way :)

"The morning farm report coming to you from Out on Quaker Road. Not much to report today Bob other than it feels colder than a bucket of snowman piss out here today. Someone ate a bat and now crop prices, cattle prices, fuel prices, stock market prices and just about the price of everything but toilet paper are lower than the point of a well diggers shovel looking for water in Death Valley. What's that Bob ?? You want the traffic report? Two tractors, three ducks and a nice pair of Canadian Geese are all I can see moving around this morning. There is less traffic out there than there is in Southern Texas when they say it "might" SNOW !!!"

In January I had what Mama Bear called "The Man Cold" and went to the doctor because I couldn't breath and had zero energy and felt like I was going to die. The doctor said it wasn't this and wasn't that but seemed like more than a cold but he didn't know. Take it easy and drink lots of fluids. Gee okay. Over the next few weeks pretty much everyone at work got some form of this nasty cold and it ran through a bunch of families here locally. Now no one can say it was or wasn't this Coronavirus **** because no one really knew about it then but it sure seems like it's been here for longer than "they" are telling us it has.

The buildings are coming down to make room for a new house hopefully Summer of 2021 :bounce:

It might have been on-sale. It was for sure "for sale" I guess. It's the one we wanted so we found a dealer and bought it. They're suppose to be the easiest to pull and simplest to use plow/software on the market so we shall see !!!

As a grownup farm boy, no equipment has ever been bought that WASN"T on sale and a hat thrown in :)

Nephew in central Illinois is out running disk 3" deep to scratch out weeds where they spread manure last fall.

Jbl: yep keep those daily farm reports coming. Even with my poor imitation of Dan Akroyd my wife was laughing almost harder than I was.

Greater words might not have been spoken about our current situation so keep on keeping on and don’t forget to give us those daily reports.

Cheers!!

Utah...SNOW BLOWS!
<snip>This is the strangest thing seeing roads pretty empty, </snip>

MAN-OH-MAN! Am I ever loving the barren (mostly) roadways, during what was once my hellish commute! :deathmeta It ***** that it took something like a virus scare fueled by a biased media which breathlessly perpetuates their agenda in our faces, and...oh wait, I'm going off on a tangent. Sorry! :(
Anyway, the past couple weeks commuting to work have been amazing! It's like it's 1993 all over again on the roadways. Seriously, it's cut off 45 minutes of my morning & evening commute, I LOVE it!

Because of this whole "work from home" thing that many have had to do, I wonder if many of the companies who have had employees working from cubicles in large buildings will suddenly realize that they don't need those cubicles...in those large buildings (that cost many $), and that their workforce can simply work from home? Today's tech is great! A win-win, right?
Annnd the BEST win-win for me, is that all those employees will no longer have to commute, so there's that many fewer idiots clogging the roadways, slowing my stinkin' commute to my job that sadly can't be done from my computer room at home, where I'm typing this marvelous marvel, fueled by what is now 5 snorts of a certain fine Canadian whiskey. ;) Now where was I...oh yeah, fewer idiots on the road, I like that idea!
