Cut the end off our industrial hoist years ago and welded a plate set onto it with multiple angle holes. A box tube then goes in it so you can change your pitch or extension with the hole drill set

Today I pinned our engine stand head into the end to front lift a duramax engine out of a van ambulance. Worked ok other than no tilt function and it angles wrong way as you go up. But by lifting rear of hoist with overhead crane you can counteract the pitch

That is an interesting idea. One place I worked, we did something similar but it was a second insert with the angel welded for some uses.

This I need to remember for future use.

Nice idea. Would be even better if angle was adjustable under load. My answer to the van problem was to make lower positions for the jack and boom on the mast. Before that I had raised the vehicle so the boom would be almost horizontal. After the carbs went away, many vehicles required manifold removal. That is were your idea would really shine. May have to copy it, with a little modifying.

It would work well for that! Cab jacking or head removal was only way this was gonna come out otherwise

I looked into cab lifting and cab removal(do cab removal monthly on kodiaks) and that wasn’t even an option on the way it was built

To add adjustability to the head part as it moves up or down, make the head part pivot with a pair of rods or straps attached to the head and boom.
Think of a floor jack turned on its side.

Cool idea. I was thinking a threaded rod you turn with something like an impact wrench at the top end of the arm. There would need to be some trunnions (think of a U-joint in a single yoke) to let the rod self-align between the bushing end and the internal thread end.

Tie rod ends would be another self-aligning possibility with a LH and RH threaded tube but I think the takeup is more limited and the impact couldn't be easily used.

Eventually you'd probably have to customize the hoist just for that end effector :)

Im curious if the hood was in the way of the crane hook/lift chain or what the main factor was that drove you to pull the motor that way ?

Front of Crankshaft doesn’t even stick past the cowling...

:headscrat OOH so that's what's under that big bumpy cover in the cab.:lol_hitti:lol_hitti

I don’t think somebody in posts above you knows what a turbo diesel in a vans like. It’s not good
That’s a big massive hole that when it’s assembked there isn’t even room to loose a 10mm socket in, it’s that full!
