I have followed this thread from day one even though I never posted. Man, I think you've done a fantastic job with the place. Keep it up!

Joe,

I was laughing out loud when I saw Dino.....what a great idea and a hoot for the town.

The Ford looks Fabulous! You are indeed a talented automotive and petrolina enthusiast.

Now, If I could just find a place downtown close by to land the chopper for a visit...hmmm.

From my 40 years of flying I would suggest the grass behind the shop, where the mural is, would be a better spot. Nice clean approach and departure from either north or south and less likely to have people get into your tail rotor while shutting down or starting. Assuming it is a Robbie nice shallow approach and departure no need to vertical in. Wires are running along 3rd street parallel to the approach departure.:bounce:

Shame there are rules against landing in a built up area.:lol_hitti

Lol at the clean rest Rooms sign

Most gas stations now have a sign that says “no public rest room” or they put an out of order sign on the restroom so no one will use it
Gas stations are going two directions now, nice new bright clean large ones and the old smaller ones are getting nastier and nastier.

So true. I've been forced to use some of the latter when on long car trips. Feel like you need to burn your clothes and take a course of antibiotics after using the restroom...

If you are ever traveling through Texas and Louisiana, stop at Bucees... about as close as you can get to gas station Nirvana! No rigs allowed, and has facilities that are the envy of the nicest truck stops.

+1 on this^

The Buc-ees in Tyler, TX has to be the biggest, nicest gas station I've ever seen.

I have never seen a Porta-Power stand like that, can't wait to see it restored, Don Long may try to buy that one from you :pimpflash

I got a chuckle out of the ad, I don't think that Porta-Power could help him bring that vehicle back to life, it looks close to being totaled to me :wtf:

The 51 is looking great! Whats the plan for paint? or maybe just keep the patina?

That's awesome you gave all the guys something cool to do while their brides shopped for wedding stuff, Dino looked very dapper

BF, a guess on my part but with no new cars being built during WWII they repaired everything and that mentality spilled over into the 1950s. My parents were involved in a head-on crash in 1952 with both cars doing close to 50mph. The shop repaired the 1950 Bel Air hardtop they were driving and even removed the huge dent in the dashboard where my father's hip broke (only head and shoulders went through the windshield).

Bears, I think Don restored one a couple years ago. Might not be the cart but a display board. Also that dent is repairable.....using a 100 lb. BFH. Lol.

North America and Western Europe is about the only place that stuff is just thrown away instead of being repaired
Talk to some people in South America or former Soviet locations and they repair everything because you simply can’t purchase new products.

The old cars in Cuba are an example of this

Its been a minute since I've been on the GJ...guess I have I bit of catching up to do. I'll start with the pair of lubesters I done. The day I bought the one with the Porto-Power cart at auction, an old timer stopped me as I was loading up and said I have one of those in my barn if your interested in another one. We exchanged info and about 2 weeks later he called me up and set up a time for me to run down to his place and pick it up. I was happy to see it was another 60 gallon tank. I done one in Sinclair of course and the other in Kendall. You may ask why Kendall???...because during the renovation I found old Kendall stickers on a couple of the shop windows.

I freshened up the paint on the front of the building and changed the lettering a bit. I came across a guy selling 5" cast iron letters. They were an antiqued brown so I blasted them and gave them a fresh coat of green. By having lettering over both doors it adds some needed balance to the front of the building.

A few Saturdays ago I noticed a garage sale posting on FB in a town about 15 miles away. In the sale was a Bennett 966 pump. Luckily I seen the ad minutes after it was posted, so I jumped in the truck and made a flying trip up to Boone. After a quick negotiation it was in the back of my truck. Super solid Arizona pump.

Yay, an update. As usual, everything looks great. Nice score on tanks and the pump. Sometimes good guys do finish first. [emoji106]
The photographer for Ms.Avery composed some great shots. Coca-Cola is probably my favorite The bandana is a nice period touch.

Every time I see one of your updates, I want to jump in the car and drive to Iowa to do a driveby. You have a great place and fantastic collection. Where will the new pump go since you already have a pair on the island?

The pump will be an inside display. I'm going to a high end restoration on that one in my favorite Power X colors. It is a correct model pump that Sinclair would have used at their stations throughout the 50s.

I agree with the letters being a better balance. THe place looks sharp. Do you think you'll have the truck done by the 4th of July? Parade time?

Well, I had to go up to the Mason City area for work this week. On the way home this afternoon, I made the hasty decision to avoid Des Moines and detour through Perry.
First off, I have to say that I was very impressed with the town as a whole, but the station is clearly one of the Crown Jewels of Perry!
It so happened that I entered town on Willis Ave and as I approached downtown, I spotted the station from a couple blocks away. I have to say that seeing it for the first time was almost spiritual (seriously). I felt as though I was approaching Mecca!
I parked across the intersection, got out and walked down the sidewalks on both sides, and snapped a few photos to memorialize this day.
Joe, all I can say is freaking awesome!!

great find on the porto power cart and diagnostic equipment
To ease the minds of Shorty and Bears fan. I do have the same porto power cart but it's not restored yet.

Good call on avoiding DSM...I stay away as much as possible. To think people go out of their way to stop and pay a visit is still very humbling to me. Its something I never really expected or even considered when I started this journey 4 years ago. I'm glad it lived up to expectations and was worth the detour.

Thanks for the nice update! The place really looks great. Nice call on the new letters for the front, it does look balanced now.

Looking forward to seeing how your "new" gas pump turns out.

I can't speak for the town of Perry, but many towns within ~30min of me (and I'm an hour from Perry) have cancelled parades and festivals this year. My Jeep club is working on their own July 4th cruise just because all the usual events were scrapped. Seems that fireworks may be the last remaining activity in most towns here.

Yes Perry cancelled all 4th activities except the fireworks. They typically have the parade through town on Willis Ave and an afternoon of activities at the city park. Since the 4th falls on a weekend this year I wouldn't have been around anyway, I'll be at the Iowa state fair grounds for the Goodguys Heartland Nationals. Thankfully it was not cancelled :rocker:

Just when I think this can't get any better, Joe outdoes himself!

I was even inspired to start looking for some Sinclair dino signage for garage wall art. Sadly what I found on eBay was a well-crafted fake--seller offered refund after I called him out on it.
