Cee, I heated the bolts with a propane torchb and I figured the horn could take a little action from 1/8" strap. I wouldn't try to forge on cold steel.

Here’s an unusual one: a Skoda Works anvil from the Czech Republic.

Believed to be 4 cwt (448 lbs), because I need a bigger scale.

My 176 lb "Black IMP" anvil. I got it from an old man that was selling his property, including his blacksmithing shop. He just gave it to me. Kids didn't want to have anything to do with his property, shop or tools. :(.

The first Monday of May this year, I had a very large Shagbark Hickory come down in my back yard during a micro burst, narrowly missing my house but doing +$300 damage to my Pathfinder. I cut a section up and had it squared by my cousin with his saw mill. I'm using that as the base/stump for the anvil.

Please be nice: It was my first time using my Ridgid router.

If anyone has anymore information about this anvil, I'm all ears!

Curious, why did you route it out like that? Never seen that done before.

YT has several videos of people who routed out an insert for their anvils.

I did it for two reasons: a) to help it stay in place and b) a place to pour and hold the plasti-dip I used to cover the bottom.

The plasti-dip is supposed to help make a firm base and absorb some of the vibrations and ringing i.e. quieting the anvil down. My anvil base is quite corroded and no longer flat. :(

I'm more curious about the black goop in the pocket...

Nice anvil and the hickory should be a good base! You might want to band it so as it grows cracks it doesn't split.

Black plasti-dip. Designed to make a flat but somewhat flexible surface for the uneven bottom of the anvil. Plus sound/vibration absorption.

I'll be working on banding it, making a tool holder and on my forge today!

I've been hanging out in the vise restoration threads of GJ. I looked for and found this thread and I'm reading my way through the posts (up to #160) and I'm finding it very interesting and informative.

Thought I would post pictures of my father's anvil. He was a farmer and had it at least since the 1960's. I think it is a Columbian and it weights about 103 lbs. Got it from his estate in 2005.

The base is not flat; it is convex. Is this normal?

Any ideas how I can date it?

I'm working on cleaning it up and maybe using boiled linseed oil on the non-striking surfaces. I've got a section of log to mount it on.

Thanks in advance,

CHRIII

Convex, the bottom bulges out. Not the entire bottom, mostly in the center. See the photos.

Got my second and third anvils today, one is a very nice Brooks 1 CWT that I haven't photographed yet, which cost me £150, the other is another Peter Wright, pretty much exactly the same size as my first, 5" and a bit across the face and 28" long, I haven't cleaned it enough to read the weight marks yet, its not in as nice condition as my first but its not bad, been outside for years but has black paint over it so there isn't too much rust.
View media item 106183They were both from the same guy, the Peter Wright was free, he said take it if you can use it. (I had just given him £4K for everything else I had bought though.)

Here is a 178lb plate-less Hay Budden I picked up . A little less than 2.50 a pound on ebay of all places. Good shape, minus some edge damage. Very good rebound and very flat work surface. It will get some light use in my workshop. Is it worth welding up the cuts in the edges? I will probably keep it as is for a while, but may want to fix it up in the future.

I figured there had to be a "Show me your ANVIL" thread on GJ! I am the proud new owner of my first Anvil. I posted it on the Garage Sale thread so you might have seen it there. I am working on dating it which is tough since the engravings are mostly gone. There is enough there to make out Trenton (if you know what you are looking for) and maybe the maker's mark near the base. It seems the other dates would be on the sides of the base. I'll see if I can make anything out tomorrow.

Trenton Anvil
Weight: 97lbs
Length 21.5"
Metal type: ???
Age? Company is from late 1800s but was bought out many times and the Trenton name was still used.
Price: $80

First two pisc as found. 3rd pic after wire wheel all but the knife. 4th pic all wheeled and sprayed with wd40. I know that is not lasting protection. Not sure exactly how I will finish the vise. Maybe BLO as is.

Almost forgot!!! I makes a nice ring and my hammer rebounds high when i hit it :)

here's my little anvil I picked up a couple months ago. Got it off craigslist for 150 bucks, it weighs 50 pounds. It doesn't have any markings except for a 6 and a 15 underneath on the bottom. My one buddy was saying it might be a hay budden, but a bunch of other people were saying its a samson. Regardless, it suits my needs, very easy for me to take in in and out of the garage and it works great for the few things I've made so far.

This picture is posted in a sale not far from me. No brand or price mentioned. I can tell it's huge. Any Idea what it is? Brand and Weight?

Interesting to see too. Enjoy!

Picked up my first Anvil today. I have been doing some research but so far haven't turned much up as to the date of this.
122 lb Vulcan Sweden.
Looks to have had some kind of logo stamped in next to "Sweden" but it's hard to make out now.
Any information about the brand or date would be appreciated.

Any ideas on size, brand, or value on this one? Not mine, but I plan to make an offer on it.
