I think the fan is the biggest issue, it was definitely not engaging fully.

The maroon burb has a brake issue, wasn’t sure I was going to make it home, feels like something let loose in the front, it was acting weird under a light pedal the other day, but I had been driving the F550 so I kind of forgot about it. There is no forgetting it now, will have to put it up on the lift tomorrow. :(

I agree completely with this. I guess I was trying to put myself in your shoes. The problem with this idea is that I know how I am; I seem to be able to focus only on one project at a time. You, on the other hand, get much more accomplished.
On the rusty vehicle thing, I just finished a 5-year restoration on my project car which started out as a rusted out basket case. Just a few odds and ends left to do but it's on the road. What a learning experience: if I ever do this again I would head to the Southwest US to find a car. Might be more money up front but it would sure be worth it to not have to deal with all the rust that I had with my Northeast Ohio car. I realize that you may not have the time to realistically to do this


When my then 15 yr old son wanted a 70s chevy pickup
We got one from Arizona.
Totally worth the extra money to get a rust free vehicle.
I can replace an engine or trans in a weekend
But I can’t repair rust and can’t afford to pay someone else to repair rust

I would rather have a rust free dented up truck than one that has rust.

My end goal is to have all rust free vehicles, even the one I drive in the winter, I figure oiling it will certainly help, but the plan would be to buy a new “winter beater” from down south every few years.

One of my cats likes to watch TV, the other two could care less. When football season hits, she will chase the football, the players, and she loves to sway the refs.

All along, I have been saying that you can't fit a Detroit 60 series into Perk, well I just found one for sale that is semi local that not only has a 60 series, but also has an automatic transmission. I may have to take a drive, I want to see it, get lots of pictures. It is a smaller dealership, they take trades, maybe I could make a deal with them????

OK, so they are smoking crack on the price, but he is sending me the VIN and I can take a look at it and take measurements and pictures. The biggest problem that I can see if I modified Perk is the weight rating, this engine weighs 1000 pounds more than the current engine and with the knuckle boom, I have no idea how much weight is already on the front axle. I know it is only rated for 12k whereas OMO is rated for 18k already. I still want to see this setup regardless, it just seems really cool.

Oh how I miss the SG, the Hill is ridiculously hot and humid inside, no fans, no AC, but there is plenty of sweat! :(

Spent the last hour making enough room to get the maroon burb inside so I can figure out what is going on with the brakes, having a shop with two different levels and only two 3' openings to get stuff out of the way really does ****. On top of that, now the other bay is jammed up and close to useless too.

Apparently I have had a stuck caliper for a while, no smell, no real noise, no smoke. I am down to the steel on the inside pad. I checked the other side and it seems fine, the perfectionist in me say to redo everything, but the guy that wants to be able to drive is saying slap a caliper and pads on it. I haven't had a chance to see how bad the rotor is, but I know it was metal to metal yesterday for a 150 mile trip. It ***** because these rotors are the PITA ones to replace, got to pull things apart way more than you want to. I guess I could drive Perk for a couple days, at least perk has AC. I would take Bev, but I have taken the insurance off at least twice so far and I am afraid my insurance agent will think I have lost it.

So just when I decided to go all in and change everything, they only have one of the rotors I want in stock. I am not going through all this effort just to put a cheapo rotor on. I have been wanting to try these rotors for a while, not sure if changing just one will be an issue or not, guess we are going to find out. ;)

I had to change them on my old 3/4 ton burb a time or two. It could be a lot easier, but it could be a lot worse.


I am actually looking for another 3/4 ton. Finding one like I want is proving to be problematic .

They are getting old enough that they are either junk or a "collectors item". So you either do a ton of work or spend a ton of money. Just got back with the parts, losing motivation really fast, mostly due to driving Bev, she has AC and that was nice, back at the Hill and it is hot, hot, hot........

I am looking for a 4wd with rear ac and barn doors. That combination must have not been sold very much. I had one without rear air and it was miserable in the summer. The front could not move enough air to cool the whole thing.

I am actually looking for another 3/4 ton. Finding one like I want is proving to be problematic .

I have one and trying to get a new one they only sell them to transportation companies. It is great for towing and the brakes make a big difference.
Am thinking of rebuilding the driveline if I have no choice, but starting to have electronic issues with radio.

All of mine are equipped that way, you just need to look for an SLT, almost all the GMC burbs come with rear AC, barn doors is hit or miss, I have 5 of them, but then I also like the diesels.

Just finished the burb, I had it apart three times, the axle would not cooperate, I think I finally got it, but only the test drive will tell. Wish me luck.

It appears to be a success, now if I could just fix the AC in the burb, the AC in the shop, and the F550 cooling system, I would be happy as can be.

For some reason most 2500s down here are tailgates. If they have barn doors they are stripper models with no rear ac.

When I was married we had (I think) 1999 GMC yukon. At the time, it was the smallest, yet biggest suv we could get to tow the horse trailer, without going diesel.

It was loaded, rear AC, barndoors etc. It towed great but would burn out brakes, even with the horse trailer electric brakes (city towing, not mountains). Others here with suburbans confirmed that the brakes burn out fast with just city driving. Also had to replace the alternator and fuel pump a few times.

I hated it. She kept it in the divorce, because we only bought it to tow the horse trailer. The $20k horse trailer that, funny, didn't get listed on the divorce assets. Nor did the $2k morgan horse or the $20k andalusian horse get listed. I supposed I should have read the paperwork a bit more carefully. When I asked later, she said: "I didn't list those because they are mine..."

Not a year after we got divorced, she was rear ended in it by a ford F350. She was on her way to work, perfect weather, stopped at red light, in a neighborhood, in a 35mph zone with an uphill approach to the light. He hit her so hard that the barn doors were smashed, passenger side quarter window popped and both those doors jammed shut. Drivers seat back was broken. She was fine, but it did fix her bad lower back, for awhile anyway.

She used the insurance money to buy a new 2005 BMW Z4.

oh yeah, I'm not bitter. I got the 1993 chevy S10... She walked with the house and everything else. LOL

oh and for you Strouty, Colorado, no rust. None.

Kay, I think that pad might have lasted another day, since the caliper stuck, it was doing a lot of rubbing, but not much braking.

I forgot to mention, I also finished fixing the GFs car window, it broke some clips and wouldn’t go up or down anymore.

Tomorrow I have to do my laundry, then finish assembling my Dad’s Father’s Day present, then I may grab the AC units for the house.

Yep, no rust. Sun eats the interiors and fades paint. Lot's of bad, stupid drivers who have moved here account for most wrecks. Usually the first snow storm or icy roads of the year. So look out for front or rear damage.

Watch out for hail damage. I once had a $4k hail damage on a $8k car. I used the money to buy a condo, back when you could get a 1bed/bath 800sf for $30k. Those were the days. The wife made me sell that place.

That car was 1990, 3 months old when it got hit, I didn't get it fixed. geez, I had it until the wife made me trade it to get the yukon. Most of the dents popped out in the summer heat.

oh hell, I'm starting to see a trend here...

I had to scan, print, and bind some documents for my Dad, figured giving it to him on Father's day was as good a time as any. It took me close to 3 hours and the office was like a sauna. :(

I also mounted the passenger side vent visor on the maroon Burb, when I originally tried to mount it, she snapped, guess it was too cold, definitely not too cold today. I am thinking about heading home now, seems like if I get started on something else, it will turn into a late night. I can do a late night, but would prefer to be in my home office or at least at home with the GF rather than alone on the Hill.

This morning I ordered the next round of parts for the F550, hopefully this will make the truck usable again.

Then you would have a different engine with less issues potentially. Not a bad deal when you look at individual values for those things, but still not a great deal when looking at value combined.

I think $7-8k would buy you a decent 2x4 version of this truck, but if you look at the 4x4s the price is much higher. Plus there are a few things that set this truck apart, one is that I am paying $500 a month for ten months interest free, two is that the remote for the crane was over $5k alone, three (and probably most important) is that the truck is rust free.
