Roll pin punch set, please advise on purchase

I don't have any of these. I only like quality punches, no junk. eBay doesn't bring much up. I'm ok with used if they're not beat to hell.

I need a basic mechanic sized set not tiny gunsmithing ones (but ok if they're included). And I want the proper end that fits in right, not the rounded over cheapy style.

Please advise.

I concur. Mayhew seem to be a little better made but Wilde via Tekton are such a great price it’s hard to justify anything else, especially when buying a full set.

I've had success with the Mayhew or Williams pilot pin punches (Looks like they come out of the same factory). They have a dimple on the end to fit the center of the roll pins. It prevents damage to the hole and helps if you have to drive in a pin in a tight spot.

Edit: Just looked at that Wilde set and that is the same design, and the price is much better.

I bought the Wilde master punch and chisel set years ago and it was a huge disappointment. They were soft as hell. I would have returned them but that many pieces for that low a price I just figured I got what I paid for.

I like other stuff from Wilde but no more punches.

Not sure I'd ever need the bigger sizes included in the 12 piece.

Does Snap-On make theirs in house or are they possibly Mayhew Pro as well?

Proto or Starrett , I think they are the same, they look it. They are a couple of steps up from my Mayhew.

I have Wilde for roll punches, not bad for the price and as often as I need them. Matco has Mayhew rebrand's which I may or may not upgrade to at some point.

Far as I am aware Snap-on makes their own punches.

I also noticed one link on Amazon for a 6 piece Mayhew set. Guess all depends what sizes one wants. I do know from experience you do really need the centering tip for a lot of jobs.

I also see some "starter punches" during my recent net search.

The recessed hole to hold and help align reinserting a pin...without smacking ur fingers with the hammer

I use Wilde roll pin punches and they have held up very well. It is my suspicion that the mayhew set is probably good as well. For the cost difference between Wilde and import I like to buy American made.

I have the Proto roll pin punch set and could not be happier with it. Buy once, cry once.

Have a Mac set and some smaller and larger sizes from Proto and Mac. Mac has sizes Proto doesn't and vise versa. Mac has a no questions asked warranty on punches, which is nice for the smaller sizes that snap fairly easy.

The Snap-on is the round one in the second picture. It is a 7/16" size, use larger sizes all the time on European farm equipment. The Proto and Mac seem to stand up well to German spring steel pins

I have a couple that are bent to hell and have only seen casual use on roll pins.

Looks like only the Mayhew and Wilde go up to 1/2", and the OP did mention he needed the larger sizes. $30 more for the Mayhew is probably well worth it.

I have metric and inch Mayhew spring pin punch sets. I think they go thru 5/16 and 8mm. I can't see spending the money on anything larger, I've never needed it, but...

Kind of agree with above post as I have box of assorted spring pins/roll pins for general repair work, the largest is 3/8" as is the largest pin punch in any my different sets. I've also never needed more...yet

I suppose heavy equipment/machinery would have pins go bigger though

One of the two snap on tools i own, and their roll pin punch set is solid.
I beat the living piss out of one of the punches and it held up fantastic.
The edges took a hit, but honestly, what i needed to do in the timeframe, either the pin was coming out or the punch was getting destroyed. Oxy torches, and air hammers were also involved.
It held up well.

Who made them for Craftsman? I have a set and they worked well for me, but I haven't really pushed them. A lot cheaper than these $50 set, USA made as well.

I pulled the smallest one out and could see it was bent pretty bad. Smallest one in a set, not shocking.

Then I start looking at the rest and most of them are bent. Seems to be where the shaft size reduces. Some seem to have a second bend further down the thin part so they are basically twisted.

When you roll them on a flat surface you can see the wobble. On a few you can just look and see the bend while holding them.

Am I being a tool polisher here? What gives?

Here's the pouch. Now I could care less about this, but it sure ain't the one they show in the pics. The biggest slot is for the smallest punch lol. And the second biggest won't even fit in right, it came just how you see it, inserted upside down. Several others barely fit. If you used this pouch everyday you'd probably cut relief slots in most of the individual "pouches".

Is Amazon prime buying factory QC reject sets or something?

I don't have a Cornwell roll-pin driver set, or punch set, but I like their stuff, I have a set of screw extractors by them which are great.

Nothing $$$ in my punch set, I have a set of maybe 12 punches/pins and cold chisels I bought as a set from Sears probably 35 years ago. I think I've only broken one, yes, the smallest.

I bought a set from Northern Tools probably 15 years ago for another location, so I didn't have to run tools back/forth; they have held-up well.

My work is on my own stuff, I'm not a mechanic.
