That pouch design is atrocious. If that's really how Mahew designed it. . . Just, wow!

That's what I'm saying. It's not the one in the ads and how the hell could someone actually design and manufacture that?

And it's on par with most of the punches.

Is there a way to tell if you've been sent an authentic set?

1982fxr,
I think you've got a legitimate beef here. Those "bent" punches won't hold up to serious use. The bend results in them being springy and deflecting rather than delivering the full force of the hammer strike to the pin. The pouch is stupid and unacceptable.

You might try to call Mayhew's 800 number and see if anyone cares. Otherwise, I would return them for refund.

I have a vintage Mayhew set and never noticed the distortion yours show. I liked the look of the Wilde/Tecton/Grace style. Mostly because of the hex body that won't roll away. A Proto 7pc (1/16 - 1/4 by 32nds) set is on Amazon for $45. The Protos also have hex bodies. https://www.amazon.com/Stanley-Proto-J49007S2-Punch-7-Piece/dp/B00BNGQZHC

Looked at one of the 300 page tool catalogs from our parts stores up here. Shows a Mayhew 62254 set with a decent pouch. Punch/chisel brands in the catalog are SK, Mayhew, OTC and GearWrench. If a tool or brand is too crappy it not usually sold for commercial use around here.

Probably best bet is to check with Mayhew, if something has changed in the last few months

I have been looking for weeks, watching this thread and contemplating. I have a bunch of Mayhew products and have been happy with them. I ordered my set from Home Depot online as they were the least expensive I was able to find. I just got the 12 piece set and it was delivered yesterday. The pouch is just like the one shown above. I will need to check tomorrow and see if the punches are straight. :(

ETA....
The pouch has a flap that folds over like the one in question....

On mine another issue was that the flap, when you roll it up, some of it goes in between Velcro, not allowing all of the Velcro to work.

If you didn't see the other thread, I contacted Mayhew this morning and they forwarded the photo and video to the engineer.

I've also always been happy with Mayhew for construction work. This big set seemed too cheap to be true. I may go Proto next

FXR..... Thanks for making me go look! I didn't see your video because it was gone when I popped in this evening but I walked to the shop and I have 5 out of 12 that are not straight as the distance of the tip deviates from the workbench when rolled. Furthermore, I thing a couple of the ends may not even be ground perpendicular to the shaft.

This is a first for me, a issue with a Mayhew product.

This is a sample size of two of two that are not right so for the time being, I would consider putting a hold on purchasing these sets. I will follow up with any input from Mayhew and I am sure FXR will continue to as well.

Just curious, did you buy your set on AMZN too?

A roll pin punch is not a pin punch. A roll pin punch has a little hemisphere on the end of what appears to be a normal pin punch. This fits into the hollow end of the roll pin centering the punch. Don't see why a normal pin punch wouldn't work (they always have for me) it's just that they are indeed considered to be two different tools.

Nope, Home Depot.

I have found, recently, that HD has become very competitive with Amazon on prices, often beating them, and they are offering free delivery on tools, even a $10 item. The only downside (vs. Amazon) is their free delivery service takes a while (week or a bit more).

A regular punch, with a good fit, works just as well, unless you intend on reusing the roll pin (I try not to, just have a new one on hand). The little rounded end on a roll pin punch helps prevent deforming the hollow roll pin.
