Thanks to Torqueman for providing a flat scan of the Sears Best label. This wasn’t easy to make due to very poor label conditions. Final product printed on metallic glitter film with scuff resistant lamination.

Sorry Matt. I have a Sears Best label on a circular saw I could have scanned, but I didn't realize you needed it.

Matt,

Could you make a label for my 3/4HP restoration? It's in pretty bad shape, the only thing left is the serial number.

You have done amazing work!

Matt, have you tried any hydraulic jack labels? I have a Hein Warner Oboy in decent condition and just picked up a Walker with a spraybombed label that also has scarring. I know it isnt a "label" per se on there but wondered if you had ideas.

Jack labels are no problem. It isn’t so much what the label is on but what material it is. It’s easy for me to make adhesive backed labels. My printer can even print opaque white. I’m able to print on clear, white, or even on metallic film.

What I can’t fully do yet is make labels on metal. In the meantime I’ve printed clear labels to place over an existing piece of metal and that gave good results.

I’d be happy to make a label for you. If you can get the old one off and scan it then I’ll be able to take a look.

I will in a bit. My phone's sd card is acting up. The OBoy should be easier to make, the walker may have to find a replacement image. Figured the label would just be "clear" where they stamped info like serial, etc. Both are on metal riveted tags, plan is to apply label over plate.

Matt,
Thanks for steering me over here from the bay and the label offer. This is a great site with lots of good info and folks willing to help. The Grinder I picked up is Model 397.19370 and is pictured below. By the way your grinder restorations look great. Let me know what you need for the label and thank you in advance.

Matt-
Can you print one for a Craftsman Tap & Die set - it has metal look on the background ?
It's hard to see in the attached photo but there is a vertical "grain" in the metal looking parts of the label.
I can send you my scans of the label as well as what I've cleaned up but may not be good for printing (done in Paint).

Required a higher head temperature to stick onto this material.

Your work on these labels is fantastic Matt. I have had a Craftsman 1/3 hp bench grinder for sometime with a damaged label 257.191300. The serial number is too damaged to read, SN 314xx0799. The actual two digits in the middle aren't really important. Interesting, I never noticed the grey grid in the background until I enlarged the picture. The grid isn't important either of course. Any chance you have already made this one or would consider it? I searched the thread for the serial number with no results.

Thanks

I can make one now as adhesive. If you want metal I’m not quite ready to make those (but hopefully close. It’s been a bit of a challenge)

Has anyone used the self seal type laminating sheets over the top of the labels Matt provides? This is the clear sheet with adhesive on one side. I recently received a label from Matt and the original had a clear plastic covering over the label and I was think about duplicating this.

I forgot to ask Matt about this but thought to post here so others might comment on this.

Most of the labels I make have a scuff resistant lamination over them (slightly textured). The only time I don't laminate is when the material I'm printing on is rigid such as when printing on chrome film (for the tap and die set for example). Nearly all grinder labels I make are laminated.

This appeared to be a very simple label and I printed it, laminated it, and cut it out only to realize that the yellow is transparent and very easy to see through.

de56f687105701136bea55a1b6d121e0.jpg

So back to the design and I added an opaque white background. This made the yellow stand out and not get washed out.

c1d2b4f147b8b9e2b979e393a5b67d9c.jpg

It looks subtle in the photos but it makes a big difference.

When applying a clear label you have to be particularly careful not to get air trapped behind or it will show up on the surface. The best way to do that is to spray some water on the adhesive side of the sticker (a thin film) and then once in place use a squeegee to push out the water. You can use a credit card or bondo applicator if you don’t have a squeegee. Press hard from center out and all the water comes out and you get a perfect application.

Here are some of my squeegees.

cc5d3c67bbaf87f3650dfce8c760772e.jpg

My favorite is the Universal #907 gray squeegee at the bottom. It has the right combination of hardness and flexibility so I can really bear down on it.

Matt......are you still doing the labels? I assume with a quote, they are for sale......which is only fair considering the amount of work and the expensive ink! Anyway, if you're still doing them, I have several I'd like to order.

Thanks......Mike

these are some of the finest reproductions I have ever seen. obviously a passion and not a hobby!

Here’s a vintage VW coil label. This one is printed in adhesive backed paper to more closely match the original.

The hardest part was finding a font match (Futura) then I color laser printed on Avery label stock and contour cut on a Graphtec vinyl cutter.

And one I made a couple weeks ago with a small mistake that I only caught after label was applied.
