What are some good good wrenches, ratchets, and sockets available in satin finish?

I have a few from Toptul that I really like, but wren tools has very few options (plus I'm not sure if Mike is still in the game). I also have some Wera ratchet kits, but again... not many options.

Thanks! It's too bad Toptul didn't catch on here in the US.

I can testify that Wright wrenches are very well made, strong beams, open end has the anti slip teeth, and made in Ohio I believe.

It may be getting to sound like a broken record but Wrightgrip wrenches are amazing. I normally prefer polished tools for ease of cleanup if nothing else but their satin is hands down the nicest satin finish I've probably ever seen on anything.

Stahlwille, Gedore, Hazet (part polished), Facom (wrenches, 1/4” drive + 11mm outer hex ratchet/sockets). OEM Tools at a lower price point.

OEM Tools has some very nice sockets, ratchets, and wrenches that are satin finished. Shop around for the best deal.

Capri tools has some nice satin finished ratcheting wrenches.

There are always the German brands like Hazet, Stahlwille, Gedore, and others that have excellent, even if overpriced satin finished tools.

Tengtoolsusa.com offers many satin finished tools but, their satin tools are a little rough around the edges.

Sonictoolsusa.com also offer a wide range of satin finished tools but, at their pricing I think you'd be better off buying the original German made versions

Proto has excellent satin finished combination wrenches.

Yeah, I wish Toptul would have worked out here too.

I've bought both combination and offset double box end Blackhawk wrenches in satin finish and I love them. Affordable also.

Unior. (Wish I knew where Unior made its stuff. I have a feeling a lot of it is imported from Asia these days.)

Though I prefer full polish when I can get it without paying a steep premium.

Wright does make a pretty good satin finished wrench, but I might shock some people here. I think the Toptul water-satin finish is much nicer. I haven't yet seen another satin finish like it.

Add me to the list who wished that Toptul had worked out here. Everything I have from them is top notch.

I have a set of Toptul offset wrenches and I love the satin finish and yes they are top quality. Wish you could still get them.

Toptul needs better marketing. They make the wrong tools and sets. Good ones and excellent value, but often the wrong ones.

One of their strange decisions is to make SAE sockets and often spanners in “mirror” polish and metric in “satin” finish. Even they can’t decide which they prefer.

I completely agree. We have a few sets of Wright wrenches around the lab and I was not impressed with their finish compared to the Toptul's I have at home.

These will be rarely used and almost always in the electronics lab (although sometimes I get pulled over to fix something on the production line or one of our durability testing stations.

I'm just too picky I guess... I'm having the same problem with precision screwdrivers; I can't find the perfect handle. Wera is the closest, but I want them a bit bigger, but that's a different thread. :)

Another not mentioned yet is KTC Tools from Japan. Excellent wrenches!

Thank you all for all the suggestions! I have some shopping to do.

Thanks for posting this. I detest shiny blinding slippery polished chrome tools. Satin/matte/pebbled/whateveryoucallit stuff is so much much easier to actually, you know, do stuff with.

I just got a Wright wrench at the Flea Mkt last week for like a $1.00 from one of fellow vendors. I really like both the finish and the feel.

I hate thin handle narrow edge wrenches

Got a few Unior spanners, they can be bought cheaply in the larger sizes, I don't think many people are looking for Unior stuff. Their satin finish is quite nice, flat and uniform looking.

I think the spanners and sockets are still made in Slovenia. Unior also does a lot of forging for European car companies: crankshafts, con rods, bits of the steering assembly, etc. The company also makes the tools it needs to make its own products. I think they’re even involved in steel production in some way.

I noticed the chrome on Unior sockets is also flat and even. However, the underlying finish of the steel isn’t flawless, not that that usually matters. The sockets are very strong.

It’s an interesting company. I sometimes travel to Romania. Unior tools are widely available and used there. The big-box store Dedeman sells them, often at prices about 20% less than I can find them online in France. I usually end up getting something or other.

I prefer that approach. It allows for easy measurement system ID.

Gray tools offers many tools in satin chrome. Quality is excellent. Many still made in Canada.

Genius tools offers a matt finish. Made in Taiwan and quality is excellent as well.

Doesn't that seem like an intentional decision to make it easy to quickly see which set of wrenches you are looking at?

Not something i think i need for my home use, but seems like a thought out decision rather than a company "undecided".

I’d be convinced – not that it’s a good idea but that that’s their intention – if they were consistent about it. But they’re not.

GBAG0701 (3/8" drive swivel socket set) is satin despite being SAE. Plenty of metric sockets and sets are available in mirror. Many bit sockets are available in satin or mirror for both SAE and metric (but some are not, in the wrong direction, to add to the fun). Some ratchets are satin and some mirror, seemingly randomly. Same for spanners: a hodgepodge of available sizes and finishes.

I think companies like Toptul are the reason other companies like Gearwrench and Tekton in American and Proxxon in Europe exist. These more nimble companies give the people what they want now in terms of tool styles (e.g. long flex-head ratchets, ratcheting ring spanners), sets with modern sizes (e.g. 16 and 18 mm sockets), and specialise in making their tools pretty, consistently finished, and neatly packaged. And they have slick websites and wide distribution to support their efforts.

Compare this Tekton page to this Toptul page (Toptul doesn’t make an exactly comparable ratchet – part of the problem – or I’d link to it instead).

Has anyone noticed a general trend toward or away from satin finish in recent years?

I always thought the super polished Snap-On finish was designed to dazzle young mechanics when the truck guy rolled up and opened up the chest. The shine knocks out the higher brain centers and they make it oh so easy to get into debt.

I have several sets of OEM sockets - metric stubbies, E-Torx, larger Allen, larger 1/2 dr - as well as their swivel adapters (the older pinless version). The quality to price ratio is excellent, the satin finish has been very durable (so far), and I love the deep knurling. They don't offer as full a line as other manufacturers - 12pt sockets or stubby wrenches for example. Their ratchets all use a bulkier 36t head - they feel plenty beefy, but I needed something lower profile. Various places online sell them, so shop around for best pricing.

I have two Wera Zyclops ratchets and love them both. They feel quality and are low profile. Seems to be a limited line as well - no wrenches other than their "Joker" set, and they top out at 19mm, believe their sockets are 6 point only.

Stuff I actually own and can offer observations:

Have some Williams USA offset DBE wrenches that are satin finish. Same as Snap on just not polished. Almost look like they wire wheeled the big chunks off of the forging, broached the box, then plated them. Fairly rough.

The old Craftsman USA raised panel wrenches were satin with exception of the flats. Again pretty rough finish.

My Wright US made satin combination wrenches are Da Bomb. Prefer them over polished. A bit heavier matte finish like a grit or sand blasted part.

Stahlwille: I have satin finished type 14 (combination with larger than normal offsets on box end), and deep offset DBE wrenches. Beautiful finish German made.

Facom Type 467 ratcheting combo wrenches have a nice satin finish pretty much the same as Stahlwille. Taiwan made.

Above are listed from most coarse to least coarse finish. Stahlwille and Facom are more like a light glass bead finish.

That’s not the Stahlwille I know. My Stahlwille stuff has a sort of rugged charm to it, but it’s far from beautiful. It’s rough and ready. Functional. Not jewellery and not priced like jewellery either.

Wright which makes the strongest box end and have quite a comfortable feeling beam to crank on. Not as compact for tight places as Snap-On. They are much more cost effective than Sanp-On.
