Time for a quick update. Do you remember the side garden and drainage project? What would take mere mortals a weekend or two, I found a way to knock it out in 6 weekends. I still need to fill the area in front of the shed with some gravel.
This is my wife’s happy place. Good thing because she will need it for the near future.
She works with a Credit Union and her branch is one of these new, hip, open, wannabe Starbucks layout. Thursday afternoon, a coworker and her were standing behind the counter when a “customer” walked up behind them with handgun in hand. Needless to say, they were both terrified. New bank design is moving away from drawers to computer control dispensers. Getting money out while having a gun pressed into your back and not having a legitimate transaction is problematic. When she got home she was shaking badly.
I’d like to give a description of the robber but I don’t want to be label........

Moving on to something better. With the table saw bench functional, I decided to build a quick, down and dirty desktop for a bedroom office instead of sitting at dining table. Been sitting there for 3 1/2 months and not once as anyone asked to take my order. Needless to say, their tip is going to be zip. It’s nice having a woodworking bench.

I’m starting with a rare piece of Florida swamp MDF.
Being the ever clever cheap ***, this used to be the top for the bench that was in the office back circa 2014.

Daughter got a call from one of her CU branches Friday and her first thought was robbery on day before holiday ... turns out it was just a confused 83 y/o who hit the go pedal rather than the stop pedal. No injuries, wall can be fixed. Was fun finding someone to secure the facility at 3 pm on a holiday weekend.

While the paint dried on the desk top, I decided to cut the tab off the inside of the battery box that kept the top row of batteries from coming out.
Some work with some carbide burrs, chisel and air chisel, the tab was removed.
While I should have stopped there and went back to the desk top, oh no, let’s see how difficult it is to get a battery out. Since I didn’t have any baby oil or KY, I sprayed WD40 on the sides and bottom as best I could. Tight slit. I used the post jumpers as a place to put the crow bar.
This actually worked good until the crowbar bottomed out. Did I say something about returning to desk top, I don’t remember? Using some wood blocks, I was able to pry out more. Unfortunately both the top and middle battery were moving.
Ok back to the top. Not!!!
I got the two batteries out pretty far and decided to use a floor jack to support them safely. With jack in place, the dim bulb flickered. Wait the tried and ...motorcycle jack would be better right? I was letting the regular jack down and swoosh, the battery box had twins. thankful the cases were as hard as my head. Good time to call it the night.

Today’s Safety Lesson: don’t take your ******** when lubed up.

My friend Ed volunteered to help with the battery removal process so the next morning we fueled up on Hardee’s breakfast and were ready to go.

Using a series of different length blocks, the crowbar and WD40, the process got easier with each battery.
Ed suggested we use the lift to handle the up and down movement of the batteries.
The lift arm was used to keep the lower battery in place while we moved the upper battery onto the lift arm. Move the battery box, bring in the cart, slide battery to cart, repeat as necessary. Everything went smoothly and now I have 12 dead 2v batteries.
Since the battery boxes states 770# and the military tag states box is 1600# plus, I wanted to weigh a battery. Yay, I finally get to use my cotton bale scale. So 110#/49.9 kg each for a total of 1320#/599kg or .15 elephants. I verified this on the bathroom scale at the shop.
I’m thinking the military tag is correct so this makes the empty box somewhere in the 300-400# range.

Thank you. Physical yes, emotionally it will take a while.

On the batteries, I’m thinking about getting into the lead shoe business and the thug could get a free pair.

On a lighter side, an update on the desk mod.

I have two fine woodworking craftsman here in Tallahassee. You would think I could get a desk made of black cherry walnut with some fancy inlay, but nooooooo.

The desk is a garage sale find roll top with the roll top removed, top is recycled MDF from my old bench and painted with leftover shop wall paint, trim is a furring strip and the glass is from an old coffee table I had.
No more dining room table and I have a better view now. Works until I can fab up a cool industrial wood and steel desk.

Thanks. It’s just a hodgepodge of a couple of brought items and shop scrap.
I will say it’s the best scabbed together desk I’ve built but the window is the best part.

I'm guessing you'll have the new industrial wood and steel desk all fabbed up by next week.

I sure will!!! I’ll be at your place Saturday so I can drop off projects 532-978 that are in front of it.

We just drove through a little bit of Cleveland TN last week. We take the back road bypass from Dalton and get back on 75 in Cleveland.

We were on the east side of 75 the whole time. Just looked up where 60 crosses the river on the map, that would of been a nice ride.

There is a lot of history right there. Blythe ferry used to cross the river east of the bridge and the cherokee removal park is on that road. That is where the Indians were marched on the trail of tears to Oklahoma. Plus several other items of interest. My wife lived close to the ferry and her grandfather was a commercial fisherman there.
