Re: Beach toolbox from 1979

My dear departed dad got this in 1979. He never used it too much, and I'm only a weekend warrior, so other than a bit of white paint that got splashed onto it while I was cleaning brushes years ago (Doh!) it's in excellent shape.

Cool...

It looks exactly like a Kennedy 520, but with gloss paint -

What can i say but WOW, i had no idea. I like the fact that there is some Aussie build Sidchrome stuff on here. The main brand we have here is Kinchrome, but nothing as old as some of theses on here.

I my self have a thing for old style Eskys or as you call them Coolers.

you would be surprised at what people toss in dumpsters, or leave out for the tarshman to pickup. couple years ago, i found a large metal wall cabinet alongside the road for trash pickup, while i was loading it up i noticed some square tube laying there, i figured what the hell, never know when i may "need" it. after pulling out a couple of pieces i found out i had an engine hoist minus the hyd jack. quick trip to HF and a few 1/2" bolts and i had a complete hoist.
i have a snapon roller cab that i pulled from a scrap dumpster at work one day, seems the guy was moving and the box rolled out of the back of the truck. it was tweaked pretty bad. i pulled out the drawers, pushed, pulled and beat on the outer shell till the drawers would slide easy :bounce:

wife gets mad at me for not tossing things away after a remodeling project in the house, but her one daughter wnted to move her bedroom downstairs, and wanted a screen or something for a little proivacy, i went in the pump room downstairs and pulled out 3 doors that we had removed from the kitchen/ back stairs, recut the hinge mortise, and screwed them all together, instant room divider :lol_hitti

I hear ya! My next door neighbor's mom drives a recycling truck, and found this SO/Mac small slide hammer/puller set that someone was throwing out, and he just handed it over to me, reasoning that I'll use it way more at work than he will at home! I know it's not a toolbox, but still a pretty cool find!

I'm not to sure on the dates. the only numbers I can find are on the middle box and its a KC-605. I know for sure that the top and bottom boxes were around in 1965 but as far as a mfg date I can't find any numbers. As far as restoring the box, I would like to pull as many of the dents out and repaint the box to its original red. Other than that i'm pretty new to toolbox restoration so i'm still doing research.

WOW!!! Thank you for posting that! I have the same top box. See post #69 of this thread. I bought it used in 1969 while I was in high school. I have always wanted to get the matching roller cabinet but to be honest I have all but given up. Is yours a Canadian box? On the back mine reads ...

Snap-on Tools
KC 532
MADE IN CANADA

I am certain my drawers were originally black. Is there any evidence that yours have been painted?

I'm not really sure. He was a scrapper and a scrounger thats for sure, he could have made it I guess. I never thought to ask him when he was alive. My grandmother gave it to me after he died.

I think I have most of my vintage boxes in this thread (possibly missed a few), here's on more, it's an old Kennedy (looks like an MBC, who knows?). I'm actually down to just a few vintage boxes, sold most of them, this ones on the chopping block as well.

Wow Mickey, thats a nice rig.!
I didnt know that Kennedy has been making mechanics chests for that long.

Thanks, I know (or what I'm told) Kennedy makes their own boxes in Ohio, but this one is older and I'd bet it's made by MBC, that top box is very close to my Snap-On of the same era (made by MBC) and the bottom is very similar to several MBC boxes I've had in the past. I would speculate back then they probably made their own machinist boxes and farmed out the mechanic's boxes, but who knows, just a guess on my part. I have it on the local craig's list currently, link.

I have hd this for many years and have no idea how old it is. The curved corners and the handle are really cool.

This appears to be the original color

It seems to have started out the blue/green shade then spent a bit of time red before its current black covering everything.

I joined HAMB just yesterday to post my newly acquired old Kennedy, but then I found this thread here. I absolutely love old garage stuff like this. My personal "vintage" collection is small, both figuratively and literally, but I just bought an old Kennedy box off craigslist for $5 for no other than reason that it's cool. Now I'm thinking it will be my older boy's first tool box when he's ready. Here are the pics:

The logo stylistically looks older than most Kennedys I've seen, so I'm curious if anyone knows how old it is?

i used to have one like this, made a perfect pit box when i was racing flat track back in the mid 80's. it's big enough to hold lots of stuff nd still small enough that it dont take 3 men and a boy to move it.

This has been at the flea market for 2 weekends. Fake wood grain makes me want to get a Pinto. When I got home I found it in my early 1970s Craftsman catalogs.

Since the guy wants $100 I think I will see it at the flea market again next weekend.

The wood grain box was in good condition. All the drawers work. The sheet metal on one drawer was a little bent, but that could be bent back. I did not see any dents. Even has the original tote tray in the top that you can see in the catalog. Guy said he has the keys. The case is painted in black wrinkle, but according to the catalog that is the way it came. I like the 2 metal old style Craftsman logos.

Looking at it made me want to grow my hair long and get some bell bottom jeans. Maybe protest a war. I was in high school when that thing was new.

It cost $142 in the 1973-74 catalog. The guy wanted $150 with the tools in it, but I did not see $50 worth of tools. $100 wothout the tools. He asked me to make an offer.

That c-man box is FUGLY!

I would have bought it in a second. It would go great with my Snap-on box that looks like a microwave.

Sometimes something can be ugly in a cool way.
