I'm guessing maybe it has something to do with the drywall screws through the romex?:dunno::spit:

Is this a professional installation? or was it left by the previous owner?

The screws through the box and wire were done by a previous electrician who rewired house during a remodel a few years ago.
The box hanging out back of house ged through hole drilled in back of same box with the screws though it was done by another hack.

Sometimes we find strange things buried in walls.

I once found where someone had installed an earthquake ******** a water and run a lag bolt "Dead Center" into a buried "romex" cable and sold the house with a breaker that immediately tripped when you tried to reset it.

There was a recent photo where somebody hanging a object I can’t remember what it was decided to use a 3” drywall screw they hit a SE cable and lit things up, it may have been on Reddit, there is a reason why your not supposed run long lengths of unprotected SE conductors in a structure.

We wired a large church once where "volunteers" hung all the drywall....with 2-1/2" screws. They managed to drive them through over half of the lengths of MC cable.
It was a mess to behold, for sure

I reno'd our long overdue kitchen about 8 years ago. Down to the studs. During tearout I found this surprise above the stove, this was the electrical feed to the exhaust fan. Was probably there 30+ years. The previous handyman managed to put a cabinet screw right through the cable without touching neutral or hot. The screw was touching the ground but had not cut it.

The cable way through the drywall was a nice touch too.

I also replaced my vent hood last week and found a surprise. When I pulled the panel off the hood, everything looked good. NM wire with proper clamp on the exit hole.
Then once i pulled it off I looked into the hole in the drywall and found this situation...

Luckily I was planning to run a new dedicated line anyway. It's a miracle this house hasn't burned down with all the sh!t I've found.
