If I recall correctly, the "A" was added after Columbian was purchased by Union Tool Company. The 144 was an open screw type. Not particularly rare or collectible, but in good condition a decent light duty vise.
Yes...sorry.Union tool bought columbian? That's a new one to me...they bought parker, that what you thinking of?
Hello Wilton Experts,
Is there a date code on Wilton Shop King vises?
The vise in question is the 4" SK on the right side of the first picture.
On the side of the vise is cast: WILTON CHICAGO 14 USA.
Stamped on the bottom of the swivel base is: NM 13-634.
I notice that NM is stamped on different places on the vise. Maybe the QC Inspector's initials?
I've read that these vises were produced from 1950 - 1957. Is that correct?
I appreciate any guidance and links to historical information.
Thanks
No date code for the Wilton Shop King, but the no.634 is the catalog number. Sizes and options did change over the years and the following link provides many catalog pages to help you get an idea of when your model was offered.

So who's going to be the proud new owner of this #5222.---All it takes is a trigger pull.

Any info on this guy?
Hoping to pick it up tomorrow.
Is it a C2?
I just picked up this Hollands no.6, which I've never seen before, nor can I find any information on. It has a unique pattern and a brass tag with Crerar, Adams & Co., who was a Chicago based co. that provided Railway supplies to the industry. You'll notice that the casting says "Holland", without the "s" as well.
If anyone has any knowledge about this vise, it would be greatly appreciated!
jaw width.......3-1/8"
jaw opening....4-1/8"
weight...........23 lbs.

It is a Cx, just can't tell which one from this far away. Do you know the jaw width?
.
This adv. points to it being in the 761 line of Stanley vises, if not user modified.
Can be clamped, screwed or bolted to a bench.

It’s a C1
4 1/2” jaws
80 lbs
Somebody rattle canned that. I'd strip. Slide should not be painted.

The answer to your question is yes.---Some vise manufactures do paint the slide on some of their inventory.---To check this, you can go on eBay and type new Yost, or new Wilton, or new Reed, but they don't do it to very many of their units as a rule.---Any way the paint is just going to wear off and until it does it just causes drag.---I think their only reason for doing so is merely a selling point.---As Outlaw said, don't paint the slide, just lube it.
I found a couple of nice Wilton’s today. The Chicago first gen C2 should clean up pretty well .

Edit; never mind, I miss-read...
I don't remove the main nut unless necessary. It rarely is.
I have been busy since December and finally got around to wrapping up this Prentiss 58. Started this guy in 2013, slowly finished it. To much to list here on all the work I did so I wrote a blog about it. If interested in seeing all my repair work I did I'll add a link. This guy is going back home to NY. Sold it to a good customer that I promised it to 5 years ago. It is a big vise, not one you bolt to a bench, needs a stand like one of those railroad stands. 8-1/2" jaws that opens to 11 inches and weights around 300lbs. Jaws are bigger then the Wilton 800's. Which I considered the heaviest jaws out there that are original.

The Verdict is in. The Unidentified Vise is a Stanley 746 3". Bought for $10. First three pics are as found. Last three pics are after a quick cleaning![]()
