If I recall correctly, the "A" was added after Columbian was purchased by Union Tool Company. The 144 was an open screw type. Not particularly rare or collectible, but in good condition a decent light duty vise.

Union tool bought columbian? That's a new one to me...they bought parker, that what you thinking of?

Thanks for posting.
As a younger guy just getting started, I predict that you will begin using a vise more and more and if you have a chance to use a great old vise from the heyday of American manufacturing, you will want one.

Hello Wilton Experts,

Is there a date code on Wilton Shop King vises?
The vise in question is the 4" SK on the right side of the first picture.

On the side of the vise is cast: WILTON CHICAGO 14 USA.

Stamped on the bottom of the swivel base is: NM 13-634.

I notice that NM is stamped on different places on the vise. Maybe the QC Inspector's initials?

I've read that these vises were produced from 1950 - 1957. Is that correct?

I appreciate any guidance and links to historical information.
Thanks

No date code for the Wilton Shop King, but the no.634 is the catalog number. Sizes and options did change over the years and the following link provides many catalog pages to help you get an idea of when your model was offered.

Fierljeppen:
Once again you’ve provided the authoritative word on a particular vise. Thanks!
I have the smaller size one. As you said in your post about them last year, the eBay prices are definitely going up.

For a bit of humor, here is an interesting ad on my local C/L
Useful I suppose for clamping huge asses. :)

I found a couple of nice Wilton’s today. The Chicago first gen C2 should clean up pretty well . The 400 HD is in great condition with most of the original paint intact.262c835f88d1b9e0c6286e8cb690145f.jpgf1f3b07847ebd9763304b258358cb7cd.jpgfb0ae478beef2baefb000151017d1e89.jpg

I just picked up this Hollands no.6, which I've never seen before, nor can I find any information on. It has a unique pattern and a brass tag with Crerar, Adams & Co., who was a Chicago based co. that provided Railway supplies to the industry. You'll notice that the casting says "Holland", without the "s" as well.

If anyone has any knowledge about this vise, it would be greatly appreciated!

jaw width.......3-1/8"
jaw opening....4-1/8"
weight...........23 lbs.

Fierljeppen - that Hollands looks sweet. Love the tag on it too.

I just picked up this old Rock Island 231. 3” jaws. Has a welded spindle, but otherwise in decent shape. Anyone who has a spindle for a 3” RI (5/8” diameter, 7 TPI) pls message me.

REED 104R

Read too many vise posts here and watched too many youtube vise videos, and got vise fetish and wanted to own an old American machinist vise although not doing too much metal work. Reed is on the top list.

For some reason not a lot of good vise pop up in Houston area with reasonable price either on CL or FB, so turned to ebay. Negotiated a Reed 104R for $115 + shipping and tax (seller originally wanted $200). The price was not great but I think was ok. It was received yesterday undamaged all the way from northeast.

(Actually I won another Reed 204 1/2R, but total cost is prohibitive ($280, seller wanted too much in shipping) so passed on. It has smooth jaws but could not tell from the picture if they are smooth from factory or someone grind them.)

Not too much rust, the jaws seem also ok, close tight. No crack or repair. But could not find the date stamp, paint may be too thick. Overall very happy with it.

One question here: I do not see a lot of red Reeds, mainly grayish. Is the red paint original? Do they also paint the slide in factory? There is another orange layer underneath the red paint, could be the primer? See the last picture, under the slid support, it was only orange.

The most red paint is still there; if it is original, I may want to preserve it, and only do the basic cleaning.

Thanks in advance!

The answer to your question is yes.---Some vise manufactures do paint the slide on some of their inventory.---To check this, you can go on eBay and type new Yost, or new Wilton, or new Reed, but they don't do it to very many of their units as a rule.---Any way the paint is just going to wear off and until it does it just causes drag.---I think their only reason for doing so is merely a selling point.---As Outlaw said, don't paint the slide, just lube it.

Picked up this Prentiss No. 20 on ebay. Its in pretty good shape, but I may restore it at some point. I am keeping an eye open for a no 22 or 23 with the graffiti font. Maybe one day Ill be lucky to find one of the big boys but for now this is a perfect home shop vise for me.

This adv. points to it being in the 761 line of Stanley vises, if not user modified.
Can be clamped, screwed or bolted to a bench.

The Verdict is in. The Unidentified Vise is a Stanley 746 3". Bought for $10. First three pics are as found. Last three pics are after a quick cleaning :)

It’s a C1
4 1/2” jaws
80 lbs

I hope you’re right. I restored a C3 and it’s so damn big I don’t know what to do with it.

I want a CO or C1

I was thinking this one was a C2 which is still a bit large for my needs.

The price is right so I’m getting it either way.

It was a two Vise weekend for me. This is the on I got first. Estate Sale. Machinist. Most power tools made in house. Interesting. This dusty fellow was sitting on a table down in the shop. Asking was $25 but agreed to $20. Nice to negotiate on day 1. I was number 8 on the list and that's all they let in at a time!!!

Wilton Woodworking Vise, W-9-63, 7" wide Jaws

It was really dirty so got a quick clean up. I don't think all the parts are original. Should the pipes be hollow? Should two Nuts be used to control the main screw? I found a listing of this vise that says it is Quick Release. I don't see how this one would be with those two Nuts.

Any Idea where this was manufactured? I don't see any city information like on their old USA bench vises. Schiller Park, Illinois?

Is this original paint?

Somebody rattle canned that. I'd strip. Slide should not be painted.

Thank you Outlawmws and va.grouseman for the confirmation. Then this becomes a project to strip and clean. Probably will keep bare metal, loved those bare metal vises seen here.

Did a quick cleaning in the afternoon, removed the back split pin and tried to remove the main nut with medium hard hammer strike, but the nut did not move at all. Did not want to break anything so sprayed some WD-40 at the based on the nut and stopped here. Do I have to strike really hard to remove the nut? No rust inside there.

I have been busy since December and finally got around to wrapping up this Prentiss 58. Started this guy in 2013, slowly finished it. To much to list here on all the work I did so I wrote a blog about it. If interested in seeing all my repair work I did I'll add a link. This guy is going back home to NY. Sold it to a good customer that I promised it to 5 years ago. It is a big vise, not one you bolt to a bench, needs a stand like one of those railroad stands. 8-1/2" jaws that opens to 11 inches and weights around 300lbs. Jaws are bigger then the Wilton 800's. Which I considered the heaviest jaws out there that are original.

Just read your blog Kevin and again, it was an informative pleasure.

Nice vise and price. I have a 761 without mounting holes or any factory indentations to start a hole. I guess those type of vises all were being advertised as being multi mountable. Not to muddy the waters further, another adv. same book.
