While sipping the morning coffee ,I came across a FB Marketplace ad and promptly contacted the seller, met his ransom demands,PayPal, $4, must pick up within 7 days, meet in public, etc. By 10:30 am we had met and a heavy box was in my car. Proceeded home to get some remodeling done, and finally about 5pm was able to retrieve the box and begin sorting on the bench.
tool8-29.jpg

I had seen a few choice items in the original ad but the goodies just kept coming as I emptied it onto the bench. The calipers are Starret and Lufkin, bench block is a Starret129,v blocks are Brown and Sharpe. There are scribe points,Jacobs chuck, the machinist jacks are parkerized ,but no name that I can see.I'll look harder. And of course one little gem right in the center ,which will be a key addition to my collection.I've lusted after them, never found one in the wild until now. Happens to have kelvinator stamped on the backside.
The needles(about 11:00 in one of the pics ) is interesting ,I am guessing for leather work???
The tap extractors are something I've wished I've had a few times. The Toledo pipe taps are cool that they are in their boxes, but I am pretty sure I'll never thread pipe ever. Link below to the full album of pics to avoid multiple posts.

Definitely a USuck lot of tools. Just one old quality USA tool for $4 is a usuck buy in many cases!

Hit a few sales this past Friday. First was a machinists workshop. Been in one before and not bought much. Bought more this time :)

Railroad Anvil $30
Wilton Vise W-9-63 $20
Everything else $20

The shop was stacked. Touch a tool and your hand will be full of whatever accumulated on it. Mostly built up wood dust. The guy built most of his power tools was pretty cool.

Some before and after pics of the Anvil and Vise. They were really dirty so got a quick clean up. I'll post more pics of the Vise on the Vise Forum. I don't think all the parts are original. Should the pipes be hollow? Should two Nuts be used to control the main screw?

For the two Vise gips the one has a pat number on it. Guessing that is older.
Prices seem backwards on the Wilton Vise and the home made Railroad Anvil? I surely think so. They started at $40 for the Anvil. Nice they negotiated on day one.

Good price on the railroad anvil. They are getting harder to find. Prices are either cheap or over the top. The size looks like it's 24in? And someone spent sometime to make it look like an anvil. It will be fine for homeowner pounding on.

My dad's friend and our mailman when I was young passed away. We were invited to look at his stuff to see if we wanted to buy anything. We did. Cute little mailbox $5. Cute little lamps $20. Two cute little lathes. Cute little plane. Cute little SOCONY can.

Pictures must definitely be deceiving! It's exactly 12" long to the tip. With so much railroad taken off to make it into this nice looking anvil it really does need to be screwed down. I've seen unmodified railroad this length used as an anvil just sitting there.

I do have some crazy lead "castings?". Basically big heavy rectangles. Previous owner left a crate of them. Now those are HEAVY!!! If I don't screw it to a bench I might attach it to one of those :)

Made about eight stops today, with only half of them having something interesting. The first stop was an estate sale listing 60 years of stuff, with tools being featured. It started on Friday, so not much left by the time I got there, but still picked up these:

The box on the left contains misc. sockets- mostly Wards, with Plomb, SO and others thrown in. The box is a dead ringer for Proto empire boxes of the period, though it is pretty beat up. The Dayton box, once I culled the garbage out, is a mix of Fleet and the Dayton (Thorsen) that should be in the box.

Second stop advertised tools, but they were mostly Harbor Freight type stuff. Did manage to pick out a nice Millers Falls brace and a Plomp pebble cabinet driver.

The next four or so stops were busts, but I ended up going back to an estate sale I was at the other day for 1/2 off. It had a lot of nice gunsmithing stuff, but a lot of the good stuff was gone. But I managed to pick out the following:

A copy of Chapelles Boatbuilding, which is my favorite find of the day, a reloading catalog, an original packet of Benjamin .177 pellets unopened, and misc. sockets- Plomb and SpeedMaster.

Final stop was from a swap dealer who didn't have any swapmeets to go to, and so had a garage sale. Lots of interesting tools, but he had a decent idea of what was what, so no bargains. But I did manage to find this:

An incomplete Truth 1/2 set, along with a WWII SK breaker bar. Someone painted over the label on the Truth box so I am not sure if that is correct, but it is a good start!

I think you hit the nail on the head about the S-K wartime breaker. It’s a perfect match to the one in my wartime set.

Had a good flea market this morning. Picked up odds and ends like the vgc Gambles socket box and miscellaneous craftsman pieces. The cool find was an older gentleman who had a table a tool bag on it he was selling. $35 scored the bag filled with Williams, Armstrong, and others. We talked for a minute and asked him about his bag. He retired as a maintenance man specializing in electric for Whirlpool. I remarked that I was surprised he was selling his bag. He said young man I carried those tools with me everyday for over 30 years, I don’t want to even look at the bag anymore.

Hit a clean out sale of what was a alternator repair/rebuild shop.
Not a whole bunch, but I did get a unusual piece.

Best I can figure, it’s a shot blast machine for aluminum and cast iron parts, I’m thinking he used on alternator housings and such.

It’s shop built, but pretty stout.

Picked up some other stuff, totes of wire, a 1 HP Dayton motor with impeller, a aluminum ramp, couple plumbers torches ( maybe out of 6, I can get one to work), SK 1/4” extension.

An Ammo box (this one will replace the one I store primers in for obvious reasons!)

attachment.php

A Coleman 228F, (1/73), A 3000-5000BTU heater, and a gallon of Coleman fuel!

And some welding supplies and materials: All Told $27!

You **** for the Coleman gear for $27, much less the rest of it! Plus, that compass is sweet. Around here, everybody wants $10/ea. for used ammo cans that size in worse condition.

Apparently M36A2 primers were (are?) for 20mm and 30mm cannon ammo. Interesting: http://ammunitionthrough30mm.emilspec.com/MIL-P-46601/page8.html and https://www.armscom.net/products/cartridge_30mm_goal_keeper_mpds_k164_fmpds_k165

Yep, I usually hear 10 or more for any ammo can. I have enough that I don't take them unless $5 (for a nice one) or less.

And thx! Yeah, he was pricing things to move!

I wouldn't have gotten the Coleman stuff, or even seen it if I hadn't asked about "old Camp gear" He had both the lantern and heater in a loft, and the fuel in a side yard shed...

Your killing it. Another Plomb driver!

and inside was all this! Now I already have 2 or these bot for $5 with the case; done!

Today I went back out for any sales in the (non) "EVENT" area again and found mostly smalls, however on the WAY, I spot a TOO and landed this:

attachment.php

I hadn't even seen the Electrified Kero lamp glass - I saw the mirror sort of from the back. I recognize the Parabolic Mercury Mirror from seeing them occasionally in one of my "unrelated" Eprey searches, and while I had watched any number of them, I'd never pulled the trigger, despite interest, as they wanted more than I was willing to give for something to experiment with...

attachment.php

Lots of other "collectibles" about so I'm wondering what they will want... - I get around the table and realize its the mirror AND the lamp holder (I've only seen ONE complete on EPREY) tangled in the wire, AND the wall bracket is there, AND, belatedly, that the glass bowl is correct for the wall bracket basket!

The lady had gone inside. A man was doing yard work some distance away... Finally after looking twice, the guy comes over and I asked the fateful question. - he needs to see it as he wasn't sure what I'm talking about. He says "Well what do you want to give?" I hesitate (I hate setting prices...) and he asks if $2 is OK. I stammer out "Sure!", and try not to do damage getting the wallet out - (I have to un-glove one hand, get it out, open it, peel out 2 bucks... )

I collect all the bits including two semi circular wires with it that I don't know what they are for, and head on. The wires are in the pic, and fit the glass Kero fount perfectly, but no clear indicator how they attach to anything?

Moving on; So again the "Main event area" is pretty slow (slower than yesterday) but a few odds and ends:

NOS key rings and a flat square tin should be useful for something) Cents 25 for both. the rest of the tools except the hammer were a buck (Bosnia pruning shears from Japan, small Boker Electricians pliers, un-named Blacksmilth nipper/pincers, and a small set of hex drive sockets in the tin case).

The BP is a Bonney, and was on a table marked "Free" along with the lab glass stands - I confirm before picking anything up and the lady said "yes or a donation if you feel guilty." So I gave them five bucks.

Thirty-five bucks is more than I usually pay for a random box of tools but those Petersen Vice-Grips seem to be unused and other than a little surface rust are perfect. The 3/8 ratchet will find a place somewhere.

While leaving I sold three Chinese Quick clamps to a fella, don’t know why he didn’t want the other.

The rest will find a place in a tractor tool box.

Forgot to ask, what is the function of the protractor ? Never seen one like it, no markings. It can’t lay flat on a board no matter how you try.

Pretty happy with this week's picks.
An early snap on box for $2
An assortment of craftsman ratchets including a 15" and RHFT. RHFT and 15" were $10 was.
A set of thumb wheels in the original bag.
A metric craftsman -v- set in a filler case.
A slew of craftsman drives and others.

I treated my wife to a vintage 2000 washing machine this weekend for $100. Our machine is a 1997 model so this is 3-years newer. It’s also an upgrade from a Series 80 to 90 with 2 additional knobs. The fact is, she loves these older machines with their agitator, high water levels, clicking knobs and non-locking lid. I prefer them because they are easy & inexpensive to repair. The new Ferrari red, internet connected, talking machines that can’t be fixed just don’t do it for either of us.

While I was waiting to check out, I sorted through a tote full of household items. I saw a pair of Klein dikes and small Crescent wrench and decided to take it home for $8. After laying things out, I found the dikes were marked ‘Bell System’. They are stamped ‘M Klein & Sons’ but do not have the lineman logo. I’ll need to do some research to determine the age.

Other keepers include a Stanley Surfoam rasp, Kromedge shoe rasp package with a triangular file inside, small Snap-On flathead, 4” Crescent wrench, Stanley 199A utility knife, and a new magnetic Nailit tool which I assume holds the nails before striking. The remaining paint brushes were tossed in the trash although I did keep the unopened tube of DAP Kwik Seal.

Lastly, I was checking over my daughter’s car this afternoon before she headed back to college. While cleaning her wipers I found a 19mm Snap-On wrench on the cowl. It was likely left by the mechanic who adjusted the valves earlier this month. It will be returned to the mechanic tomorrow.

Went to a sale yesterday. Didn't expect to find much in tools, but did find this Craftsman Electric Chain Saw. Been wanting to buy an electric one for a while as I really don't need a gas powered one, but had been hesitant to spend the $80-$120 for a decent one. This one cost me $16 and after cleaning and adding oil, runs like a champ. Even had a new blade. 14" bar with motor rated @ 2.0hp/12amps. Also has a self blade sharpener on it and automatic chain oiling.

Went to a Flea Market this AM and found a Kennedy 526 Machinist chest for $25.00. There is no door, a little rust, it is dirty, some of the felt is "yucky" and there is a paint "splat" on the front.

A little cleaning and it will be added to the fleet . . .

Cheers

Jim

Really again [emoji15] you just found one of those and those aren’t very easy to come by and you are finding a 15” per month! Very nicely done!

Didn't have a big enough wrench when I stated to restore my Columbian 10" Woodworking Vise. Luckily a recently purchased estate sale socket set went up that high (1 1/8"). And it is true the socket has much better gripping power than the wrench. However, the comment was made I needed bigger wrenches and it is true sockets don't fit everywhere. I became fond of the idea and ran into these on FB Market. I was going to an Estate Sale in the same town the next day. Fate? Craftsman -V- DOE 3/4" - 1 5/8". Bought for $45. The bigger ones are selling for that much individually on Ebay....ouch. Doesn't hurt they are in minty condition too :)

Had a plan to go visit a yard sale today. For some reason could not sleep till 4.00. Woke up earlier, did not notice the time and arrived an hour earlier. I guess it was meant to be: while people were bringing things out, the owners kindly allowed me to look in the basement prior to bringing the tools out. Here is what I found:
Image1: the upper part is Blue Point, the rest is Snap On (missed one more socket box)
Image 2: left group of wrenches with ratchet: Bonney, Bonaloy; the one on the right is Indestro, Barcalo, ? forgot the name, Bander the large craftsman DOE is long C craftsman circle H breaker bar, extension and vintage Husky extension
Under that is left to right williams, indestro and ParkX sockets followed by Williams ratchet
Some PLVMB tools with ratchet (unfortunately marked with letter E, but in excellent condition)
To the left are darker looking Herbrand sockets and extension...
Please look through the pictures -long day, many things to describe.

Picture #2 - not sure what those tools are for. I think the left one is possibly to remove rubber part holding the exhaust.
A lot of small wrenches - some New Britain, couple of P&C
I especially like a vintage bolt cutter from HK Porter. They used to make tools look really nice back in the day!

After one week in garage I will have to do a lot of tool cleaning...

...$61 for all
