Capri tools released a few wrench sets this month, a long pattern damaged fastener wrench set, deep offset boxed end wrenches, and an updated zero offset boxed end wrench set. I say updated because, Capri might have listened to people here saying they would like the wrench sizing to be 8 X 10, 12 X 14, 13 X 15, 16 X 18, 17 X 19, and 22 X 24 because the new set is sized that way.

Glad to see Capri releasing new items each month.

Fed, our boys at Astro have a much cheaper damaged fastener wrench set that I've got that I think would be every bit as good. Part Number 7181XL. Denny likes it.

Picked up the metric zero offset DBE set a couple months back. My only gripe is that they didn’t pair the sizes “correctly”. I’m glad they fixed it, but now I wish I waited haha. I wonder if they’ll make a 9x11 to complete the set...

The deep offset DBE set looks nice, but it’s in Stahlwille price territory - pass.

As Denny mentioned, the damaged fastener wrenches appear identical to the Astros with a way higher price tag - pass.

I do like that they’re coming out with new stuff. All of my Capri stuff is good quality.

My offsets boxed ends are 45 degrees. Sometimes I wonder if I'd like the 75 degree ones. I've never used any.

They're nice for struts, or any place you're basically need a deep socket on a ratchet but you're going to impact against it aggressively. Nice for tightening the upper nuts to front struts, but in my experience gearwrench pass through has more or less taken command of that particular situation.

The damaged Fastener wrenches obviously look like Astro flank bite. I'm waiting for the agreement with Matco to run out so I can buy the stubby versions.

Does anyone have much experience with Capri? I bought one of their impact swivels to replace a frozen 21mm William's, but that's the limit of my experience. I've had the impact swivel about a week, obviously doing just fine so far. As Fed said, I'm happy to see more options regardless of percieved value.

I have a few of their tools. 1/4 & 3/8 Ratchets, some bit sockets, some of their ratcheting wrenches, and a set of their combination wrenches. I've been pleased with all of the things I've purchased from them. I always wait for a sale. They offer free shipping & reward points if you order from their site and they offer the photo replacement warranty service.
Funny story, one of the first items I got from them was a locking universal joint set. when it arrived, the 3/8 locking joint was branded MAC Tools. I guess they share the same supplier. I think Capri's regular combination wrenches are the same as Tekton's. I don't think Capri actually makes their own stuff but, sources it from Taiwan and a few Japanese manufacturers. So far, so good. They have a few You Tube influencers that beat their stuff up pretty good.

What is “correct” pairing and why?

I’m curious about this. I’ve noticed long, straight, double-ended ring spanners often have unusual sizing pairs and/or sequences in a set, often doubling up on some sizes, for example. No idea why, maybe because I’m not a car mechanic?

Ive been keeping an eye out for a set of extra long, 0 offset box end sae wrenches, and like that the Capri set are the pebble finish, but for a 5 piece set to be doubling up on 5/16 and 3/8 sizes, and stopping at 3/4, makes it a little less appealing. The blackhawk by proto goes to 1", and has 6 wrenches with no doubles for about the same price, so maybe i'll go with that one. I have seen some cool looking capri stuff from some instagram/ youtube people that im interested in though

And yet, doubling up of sizes in sets is very common with this type of spanner, but not with any other type. Why is that?

I’ve asked this question several times on this forum and no-one has been able to give a plausible answer. Not blaming anyone for that, just baffled that this is so common and yet no-one seems to want it or know why it’s done.

The Toptul GAAA0624 set goes even farther, doubling most sizes even as several common sizes are skipped.

^ I would imagine it is to cut down on the amount of wrenches, sockets, ratchets, etc that maybe someone out in a field technician type job, where with one wrench roll, you can tighten/ loosen hardware with the same size bolt and nut. Jobs with ladders, cherry pickers where you dont want to carry a tool box up to whatever your working on seems like a good reason for doubling, but in a garage setting where it doesnt matter, and i can just just walk over and grab whatever i need, i would rather have a wider range of sizes in a set, than doubles.

I've never used a bolt extractor in a wrench form. Is this a new thing? Have people used that? I'm curious to hear about it.

The size sequencing on DBE's and DOE's could be its own thread. I thought about commenting earlier but didn't want to derail the thread and didn't want to start a new thread for it.

I'm wondering if there ever really was a "standard" in either fractional or metric. My Blackhawk fractionals double up on 3/4".

Someone tell them this scrolling graphic (which is pretty cool) is going the wrong way

Unless these extractor wrenches are supposed ignore the purpose of the tooth design and tighten rounded bolts even more onto the car

Which Capri tools are sourced from Japanese manufacturers?

Lots of discussion about it in that thread as well. It basically boils down to the nut/bolt sizing standard an auto/equipment/etc. manufacturer chooses to use, i.e. DIN, JIS, etc. Different standards have different sized fastening heads for a given bolt/stud diameter. JIS-spec'd vehicles, for example, will have 17mm and 19mm fastener heads all over the place but not a single 16mm and 18mm, and the complete opposite is true in a DIN-spec'd scenario. Having wrench sets with paired-sizing relative to common sizing standards is very practical and useful.

Now...back to the new Capri offerings :rocker:
