At the bottom of the pile, bent piece of 3/4” thick by 8” wide plate, really bent.

How it got bent is unknown, why it was kept as full length, who knows.

Thanks guys, I am determined to get all the steel moved and the rack off the floor tonight. I am slowing down a bit as some of this steel is really heavy. Thinking I am going to use the rack on the F-550 for the channel irons.

Closer, still need to figure out where to put the channel irons, might leave them on the F-550 for tonight. Still need to sweep up and get the lower racks removed.

Step one done, still need to shuffle some steel.

I am going to cut a couple lower brackets off and see how a Lista fits there, if they don’t fit well, then I will have to see what does. ;)

The channels are on top of the F-550, but I got everything else moved around. Going to pull the 550 in now and see how I feel about it.

4fcdb87ca6182fa6e6d6c6edb58bbaad.jpg

Looks GREAT!

Plenty of room on the sides!

I was having trouble with the proportions of the space until I realized that the top shelf had 5gal buckets and a regular sized milk crate on it. That told me things were sure bigger than I thought. But the truck in there really shows how nice a space you have.

Good job!

I am the same way, so it pains me, I am only going to do it if I need to, right now I have very few pieces that I couldn't fit on the rack. The channels will stay full length, but I am going to move them to the quonset hut. I still have a bunch of shorter pieces to address, but I think I can make a couple areas specifically for them. I might even shift some of that to the quonset hut.

So, the picture of your burn pile, coupled with the big loader arriving, has sparked story time:

I contracted with old Frank (74 yo) per my neighbors recommendation to build my road and clear my building site out of the freshly logged 10 acres I purchased. He was eager for the extra business as he had just had the engine in his Pettibone loader rebuilt.

Frank was a one man operation. He brought the big loader out, then the smaller one. He would commute in his old Ford pickup with the dog, 2 chainsaws and a shotgun.
It didn't take long at all before I had a nice circular road built of concrete waste with crusher run on top of it in the low spots and a humongous pile of stumps and **** trees piled 10' tall along the backside of the build site. We're talking 10' tall, 15' deep and 100 yards long.
Franks parting words were: " When the snow gets deep, light 'er off."

Well, I planned for just that. My old travel trailer was on site with a propane furnace and my Ramcharger was good to 15" deep. One late December day when conditions were right on the weekend, it commenced. I didn't want the whole 100' yards to go, it narrowed a bit at 75 yards so I piled shoveled snow in a big pile at that spot.

5 gallons of gas, a match and HOLY ****. Once that thing got going, flames were 30'-40' high and even on a relatively calm day, ash was drifting onto the neighbors property 300' away. My pile of snow at the neck didn't stand a chance, fire was eating through the bottom and heat was melting it in a hurry.
That last 30some feet of pile was the area closest to the neighbor, so I was running all over the site hauling snow to toss on that spot, I did NOT want it burning. I just barely managed to stop the fire from eating through.

Crisis averted. Time to settle in a spend an evening in the winter woods. All was well until about 3:30 in the morning. The durn furnace is sputtering, then as I watched: Whoosh! The burner ignited and a flame shot out 6". Yikes! the regulator isn't working right. Shut it down. Now what? Sleeping in the Ramcharger with the motor running is a whole 'nother kind of dangerous, it's a carburetor.
Well, the glow is looking pretty tame, winds are calm, it's actually foggy out. Drove home the 70 miles.

3 days later, I had to be out that way for work, I'll check the site. Wow. It was still glowing away deep down under. If Frank hadn't left a decent buffer to the rest of the woods, it would have eaten along tree roots and kept burning like an underground coalfire forever. Thanks Frank! RIP.

RIP Frank, good story Kev. Fire and wood piles can be a real chore to deal with. I usually dig a hole and put stuff in it, this burn pile happens to be in the side of a hill and that helps for sure. I will try and cull it a bit, a friend will take most of the slab wood for his fire pit, he had been collecting pallets, but he said they can give off some serious smells.

First appointment took way less time than anticipated, so I figured I would go stand I. Line somewhere, why not DMV?

4db8960794726c211d54f7b75584f453.jpg

30 minutes in, have another 45 before I have to leave for next appointment, wish me luck!

I have been multitasking, got PoCo account setup, renewed Digsafe info for tower site, took care of some emails.

I am at the door, but there are 22 people inside in front of me. :(

Have an appointment that I need to be at by 11, might have waited in line for nothing. :(

I always go to a DMV in the small town of Shelby. I Can be in and out in 20 minutes even if they are busy. And saying busy is slightly disingenuous. When they are really hopping there are 20 people there.

At all of the DMV where I am at it is by appointment only for everything and only one person per party is allowed in. I think it’s stupid in my opinion I think everyone should be able to go in like it was before.

We're in the same boat, but now they require an appointment. Such is life in a pandemic.

This is a state level one, municipalities are not too bad, there are a couple locations further away that are faster, but I had appointments local. I ended up leaving after 3 hours, spoke to the manager telling him it was ridiculous that I was inside for almost an hour and only three people were helped, the rest of the time the clerks were answering the phones and spending ten minutes at a whack answering the same questions. They should tell people, call the state for answers and wait in line like the rest of us. The manager apparently agreed that the situation was bad, he signed my ticket stub and told me to come back after my appointment and I would be first in line. That made the first three hours worth it. I now have everything done, Perk is registered for the correct capacity now and I got a few things done while in line. But almost four hours total is still ridiculous. :(

Once upon a time, a 4hr wait in MASS at the DMV was standard. Glad those days are done, but even though the wait is shorter now, the whole appointment thing is just as much of a PITA. I do as much as I can online, so I never have to guess where they moved the office to. It’s a treasure hunt to find a DMV down here. They keep moving them around like a game of Three Card Monty, only there are fewer cards each time they switch.

As soon as you get over 10k GVW they make you do most transactions in person, *****, especially for renewals, I can’t understand why either. I am fairly used to it, today was a bit rushed because I have stuff to do tomorrow and I am supposed to go and pick up the end dump on Wednesday.

This afternoon I got to meet another GJ member Jackstand, he had a nice hydraulic hose reel for me, we are going to do some horse trading. It was neat to be able to see his place, at some point he is going to make a trip to see my place (or places).

Tonight I got to use the 550 to move a stainless steel sander that he bought from my Dad, also unloaded the channel irons temporarily. Then I went home, I am worn out, last night was not a good sleeping night. :(

Sleep went well, today was a PITA, first thing was relatively OK, fixed the forklift (Dad’s forklift), even got the charging system working. Second thing was the 1969 John Deere 440 Skidder, that was a pain, spent three hours on one line, the other side had a 5” hole torched in the frame to help with removal, wish we had done the same. It still isn’t out, must have used fifty different tools and not one worked. I left the guy there because I had an appointment, he said he thought he would be able to get it out.

At least I got to drive the skidder a bit, been a long time since I have driven it.

Well, we skid with it.

Used it for clearing raw land tower sites and for winching trucks up the sides of mountains. Didn’t get used a lot, but when it did, it sure was handy.

The end dump trailer fell through, the guy changed the year, the length, then said, well the tag fell off and I left the title in the truck I sold. I decided it wasn’t worth the risk even though the price seemed decent. Probably be a good deal for someone. Oh well. Still looking now.

Strouty, at least you didn't find that out after driving to VT! Gotta find the only "good" in some deals and go with that. Had a good long BS session with you the other day. (With no typing involved) and it was good to meet you.

It was good to meet you as well, we will have to do it again when I am not in a rush, I told my GF that had I been there at 8 AM instead of 2PM, I would have still been late for my 5PM meeting. ;)

The trailer would probably have still been an OK deal, I can't find one that has the tailgate I want, so will probably have to modify one. I have found a couple that are almost what I want, one seems to fit the bill really well and it looks like it will need far less work. When I add up materials and labor to repair the trailer I was looking at, it looks like I can spend about $8k and still have a similar deal. The tailgate is the only thing I will need to change and whatever I do will be far better than the other one anyways.
