Tonight before I left the Hill, I had the garage door opened and I saw a little black and white kitty, it came in the shop and decide to hide under some of the cabinets. I spent a while trying to get it out, finally had to pick it up and carry it outside. Cute little kitty.
Yes, had to grab it by the scruff of the neck, it essentially went limp and I quickly brought it outside. I had to keep blocking its path off, it kept trying to go towards me and further into the shop. I tried using a broom to push it out, but it would dig its claws into the concrete and was really hard to move. I didn’t want to hurt it and have it spray inside the shop, so I was pretty gentle. It was not afraid of noise or anything and it only showed its teeth once when I had it cornered and was trying to get it out with the broom handle. It would tap both front paws on the concrete trying to tell me to go away, it really was kind of cute. I think it lifted its tail twice early on, but thankfully didn’t spray anything, that would have sucked.
Cute one! looks like maybe a young one, this years crop maybe? Looking for it's first adult home.
I have heard, if you have a resident skunk, then you won't have snakes or a mouse problem. They are in the weasel family so they eat most small animals and also insects and grubs etc. They get to know you and everyone just lets everyone alone. You do need to make noise when out and about to let them know you are there and they don't get startled and mis-fire at you. With your abundant selection of mostly mobile trucks and trailers parked and stacked everywhere at any given time, your new buddy is sure to find a domicile she likes. Just name it and call out to it every time you are out in the yard to let her know you are around.
I had a coworker who said she had one under the front porch of her girlhood home for years. No one got sprayed.
I had them under my last house, it was no slab, just 10in crawlspace on grade. They were fine until they had a party and made a ton of noise and wouldn't be quiet. I stomped on the floor, it got really quiet, my two dogs worriedly looked at the floor, looked at me, looked at the floor and then left the room. That's when the smell hit me. It had sprayed under the house. Smelled for months. At work people just got used to me being a little skunky. I had no mice though.
The skunks moved out and sublet to raccoons. They were really hard to get rid of, kept trying to dig new entrance holes. Sounded like they were digging a new rec room down there. Very destructive too. skunks don't vandalize like raccoons do.
My mom had a skunk as a pet when she was growing up. It just wondered into the yard and stayed. They treated it like a cat. But it never smelled and was domesticated. She thought it was a lost de-scented pet... But it was back in the 1940s, so she admitted she didn't remember it too well.
What would really be cool, is if you could get a badger. They are great to have around.
