The Hi-Test socket sets I'm familiar with were made in Japan. I assume it's the same company. It appears they were made all over the place like Globemaster and Oxwall.
What gives me doubt that they are the same company is the logos/markings. The sticker on Old Radar's cantilevered toolbox and my Bison-Bail vise are identical. "Another Hi-Test Quality Product", with distinct styling. I have never seen that exact wording or logo on a HI-TEST socket set box. Usually it's just printed in all block letters. Have you seen the sticker logo on socket boxes? It would make sense that it was the same company, though. I agree.

AngloPHONE.
Haha. Classic slip!

Whew... where to begin. 3 sale Fri/Sat for me. 1 professional estate sale, 1 private invitation pre estate sale, 1 return to, 3rd time's a charm, estate sale.....

I usually post in order I hit the sales. I put my name on the list at the pro estate sale first, then went to the private invitation, then in the afternoon back to the pro estate sale.

So I stepped first into the private invitation. This is where I got the stanley/craftsman hand planes and Disston/Atkins hand saws. They told me then I'd get first dips at their dad's place(machinist). Have you ever seen....maybe a 300sqft waist high train city in the mountains? Oh boy was it elaborate. Museum worthy. I included some pics below.

The machinist shop was much smaller than the train city. Maybe 150 sqft. Complete with a proper lathe, vise, and drill press. Not ready to sell them yet but the lathe is a "South Bend Precision Lathe Model C9-10JR". The vise an old 4.5" Columbian. I see these lathe's selling from 150 to 1500...lol. Maybe 300-800 the norm. How would you value it?

What did I walk away with? Not much. A couple pony pipe clamps, couple ball peen hammers, a small hand saw, sharpening stone, and a cotter pin assortment for $30. Wasn't sure a good price point for the pony clamps. Paid $5 each. Felt better when the pro estate sell I went to had rusty ones for $10 each. Maybe the best buy was the small bonney ball peen for $3 :)

I don't see any tooling with that lathe, but it is NOT a quick change gearbox, hard to sell and high end retail 5 to 600 around here

Thank you!

I am guessing all the tools/parts that are in the shop will be included. There were things on the table behind the lathe (the big open space left by the motor). Also drawers of things all around. Right now it seems it most likely will go to one of the late owner's friends. I haven't been told a price yet but I would get the offer next.

So there should be extra gears they are just time consuming to change?

Catching up. My 2nd Friday stop. The estate sale I signed my name 10am friday for a 2pm start time. #2 on the list :). Workshop in the basement, small set of tools in the garage. Mostly SK.

total spent $100

SK 10-19 mm deep and short set $40 (were asking 65, said worth 130)
Eklind SAE hex set pair $10
Large ball peen hammer $5
Box of screws free
CMan USA 3/8 drive flex socket sets $10 each
Empire aluminum level $5
Draw Knife dated 1838? $10
HK Porter Boston bolt cutters $5
Craftsman 15" Adjustable Wrench $5
Craftsman socket adapter set free (said just throw it in your bag :)

Nice negotiations on the morning of opening day. I saw the husquavana chainsaw(maybe 14") sell for $40 (were asking 75). Couldn't get it started on the spot so let it go for less. Motor was moving and even got a putter once; so easy fix if any.

I went back to that local sale yesterday, as it was so packed with stuff and I wanted to see what could turn up.

A complete set of Beard bearing setters, a neat old PowrKraft box (no idea what it is for) and a

a sharpshooter rake. Very handy for cleaning up after my dog. All for $7.

After thinking I was done for the weekend once I dug thru the random toolbox, something else popped up. An Allen Universal Wrench set for $10. Messaged him immediately, and swung by yesterday evening to pick it up. They also had this Snap-on 1/4 set that was decently complete. Picked them both up for $15 total. SO ratchet adapter and Plomb breaker were in the Allen box. 1/4 set has SO standing up, and all the loose sockets by the ratchet are Plomb. Date code for the set is E, so '44? Ratchet was added by me, code is 51.IMG_20200920_183113_01.jpegIMG_20200921_165741.jpegIMG_20200921_165801.jpgIMG_20200921_165841.jpg

Fair amount of suckage in that find! Especially that ratchet adapter!

Added to Lugz thread. How did I know he already had one...?
Hey, the more the merrier! And I really appreciate your enthusiasm for it. I replied there, but I'll add it here, too. The man likely invented the first Roto-Ratchet, of sorts, AND the first Freewheeler - in the year 19 freaking 18! And yet most people think he's the other (hex key) Allen. The guy can't catch a break! :)

Thanks. Ratchet adapter has some surface pitting, but easily springs back and forth. Fully functional. I am wondering if a PO added it for use with the breaker bar (which he also added), or if the original 12-tooth design was too coarse for him but he still wanted the gimbal effect.

Fair amount of suckage in that find! Especially that ratchet adapter!

Sorry, forgot to add the picture showing the amount of motion. Wont let me add pics on an edit. This is from the end of the handle, looking "down" the ratchet. The drive plug can angle this far in all directions, both forward and reverse. Picture is taken with the ratchet head "flat" left/right as best I could. Best guess is 10-15deg of motion.IMG_20200921_172509.jpeg

Picked up this Columbian Wood Working vise yesterday, needs some TLC but a nice platform to work from. 35.00 bucks20200920_201002.jpg20200920_201008.jpeg20200920_200928.jpeg

I hope it cleans up good for you. I am restoring a Columbian Woodworking Vise now and it was peened all over. The bolts holding the slide rails, and the pin holding the handle were all peened. If yours is the same, either grind off the peene or leave them on. Good luck!!!

There should be a set of gears to change the screw feed speed, pain in the *** to change.

Went back to the same yardsale as yesterday.

Bought 3 more chainsaws, about 20 hammer and axe handles, a splitting maul, a huge odd shaped sledge hammer, small generator, heat shrink tubing, air fittings, big aluminum splitting cone, a new roll of electric fence ribbon, metal pressurized spray can, and a few odds and ends, I think I paid $30 total.

I bought a bearing setter that looks almost identical to yours yesterday at a yardsale.

As I was digging thru the grey/red toolbox from a week or two ago, I also found a Beard bearing setter. Decal is in great shape, and the inside tag is perfectly readable. Only missing the knurled nut on the largest one.1600740622699.jpeg1600740635463.jpeg1600740655131.jpeg

This was my final stop for the weekend and what I think are the best finds :)

I returned to the garage where I found the NOS Wilton Bullet and the Trenton Anvil. Were there still goods to be found a week later? Well I spent another $70.

Toolbox $5
Hammer and hatchets $5 each
Hammer pliers thing $1 (what is it?)
Pair of sharpening stones $5
Pair of 3in1 in metal containers $1
Stanley No 700 corner vise $10
Parker No 94 Bench Vise (1939 patent) $30

Wooden handles include Norland, Williams, and Plumb
The Parker has smooth jaws and pipe jaws

When I was there the 2nd time (for the Anvil) I looked for the small double sided axe but it was gone. No where to be found; figured it sold. Family friend said the owner used it all the time. There was a wood burning stove in the garage. The Parker vise had a tool chest under it, with transmissions stacked in front....lol... so hard to get to the nuts to unbolt it. Just a couple inches between the chest and the bottom of the work bench. I reached in there to clear out the stuff and what comes out? The baby double head axe! Also the large ball peene hammer. Nice. I'd like my daughter to get to use that little axe.

Alot of great Vise finds in GJ this past week!!!

Wow! Talk about some scores?!!! Suckage to Roy & 3bay (sheer volume & price), ffloyd (chainsaw volume & price), and jrg & BB (Wilton bullets for not much money!).

3bay What are your plans for those Miller Falls ruby chisels? When do you think those were made 60s-70s or earlier? Nice score on all that stuff.

I scored this weekend as well. We had two of our grandsons (ages 9 & 6) here until Mon afternoon. We had a lot of fun! Riding pedal cars up and down the sidewalk, playing badminton in the wind, reading Star Wars books and many games of Monopoly Jr.

My favorite thing as a kid was seeing all the random cool stuff my grandpa would bring home from his weekly yard sale trip.

Thanks, FF. I seem to remember that, kinda sorta, from my host year, or maybe that was someone else. Anyway, I get it. Also the nostalgia. Like being a kid and taking apart an old 2-stroke just to see if you can put it back together again! When we still listened to music on the AM dial! :) (And just so you don't think I was overly curious, I was mainly pulling BB's leg. He was making a killing here for a couple years with Craftsman RAS's. I lost count!)

I am that grandpa!!! (actually "Papa D") and I have a couple of grandkids who love going to yard sales and estate sales with me - and a bunch more who hopefully will when they get a little older!
