Looking for a spindle collar for a Chas Parker 206, which has 5 inch jaws. I’m thinking a 4-5 inch jawed Chas Parker collar may work. Mine is broken, still kind works but I want an intact one.

Thanks, Matt

Looking for a collar for a Dunlap 5244 vise. I picked this up from a swap meet and had to drill the collar out to remove it for cleaning and re-painting it.

I ordered an off-the-shelf collar with the same ID, but the OD is much larger than will fit in the main jaw housing of the vise. I haven't been able to locate any off-the-shelf parts that will work for this so I was also thinking of having someone machine one to spec and throwing a set screw in it so it can easily be removed in the future if needed. Any help is appreciated!

Thanks

Reed 3C center bolt

Here's my scrapyard find of the year, so far. A Reed 3C vise. Got her in the shop Monday and completed the cleaning today. When I started dismantling it, I realized the center bolt was missing. No problem, I'll make one. The problem with making one, is that I'm in the middle of my lathe restoration. My question: I know it's a long shot, but does anyone have a 3C center bolt that needs a new home? The vise is in incredible shape, considering it was mounted to a work table, out in the elements. After getting through the five coats of paint, I'm pleased there are no cracks, repairs or broken pieces. I'm sitting on the fence, whether to sell it or not. I have a Charles Parker 974 1/2, that I'm attached to, plus I already have three other vises that suit my purposes.
Thanks for any help.

The Unofficial Vise Parts Swap Thread - Prentiss 53 Dynamic Jaw (Drawback) WANTED

Hello Everyone,

After months of searching for a vintage vise to replace my Chinese craftsman, I found the really cool Prentiss Bull Dog No. 53 below. I thought about brazing the drawback but I'm not so sure is going to turn out very solid, the person that would help me is not a professional welder and taking it to a shop would be cost prohibitive for me.

I know is a long shot since it seems like this is one of the main weak spots for Prentiss vises but it doesn't hurt to ask.

If anyone has an extra dynamic Jaw for the vise below that could sell me, I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

Trying to put back together a Rock Island No 594. The lead screw is broken. Otherwise in excellent condition. It appears that the lead screw had a flattened end that was subsequently placed in the sand mold and molten steel was poured around this end to form the front or nose on the lead screw shaft where the sliding handle passes through. Thus making it a bit difficult to simply replace the lead screw. Anyone have more knowledge about about these models? Anyone have a replacement part available?
Just hoping........:D

Update: The measured information on the lead screw is as follows:
The ACME threaded rod is 7/8" dia, 4 tpi with an exposed (not counting that portion that's hidden inside the cast front or nose) is 15-1/2". The actual threaded portion is 10-1/2" in length with a smooth shaft between the front casting and the lower section of the shaft that has the threads. Hope this information helps.

Thanks

Did you find parts for this one? If not, are you wanting to sell it?

Hi, I am having the Reed 4C / 106 / 206 split nut batch replicated. Unit cost target is $75.

Edit: I’m hearing some intel that there are slightly different ODs, so I’ll look into that.

The first prototype is underway.

Can anyone point me towards the main nut for my D44 Columbian?
Screw is 3/4-4.
I’m a bit of a machinist, so I might be able to marry some new threads into the original stripped out holder.

I took a shot in the dark and ordered 3 nuts from eReplacements. I got the 11113-15, the 11114-15 and the 111145-15.
The 14-13 is 5/8-4, the 11114-15 is 3/4-4 and the 15-15 is 7/8-4.
In spite of not being even close to the shape of the original nut on my a columbian D44, the 14-15 nut seems to kinda fit and work.
The original nut was held in a slotted “run“ that was cast into the stationary jaw. Almost looked like a giant version of the dovetail that holds the front sight on my old .22 single shot. See my last pic in the post above.
The main bolt that runs up from under the base was originally used to keep the nut from escaping out backwards from the slot, as well as being the main swivel point in the base.
I had to supply a new, longer bolt (1/2-13 by 1 1/2” long) that now serves as the base swivel bolt, plus secures the new jaw in place by passing up through the base, up thru the next layer (the anvil base itself) and up into the threaded new nut. Darndest thing, but I believe it’s going to work.

The Reed 4C split nut kit is now available.

It consists of the split nut, the thrust washer, and two point set screws (one spare). $75 USD per kit, inquire within.

All,

A while back i found this 3in Wilton Bullet and have always wanted to restore, and i have been searching for a swivel base. I had a thought and was curious as to if any knows, will a Wilton Shop King swivel base be the exact same as for the 3in bullet? Let me know your thoughts....Thanks all

Looking for a main nut for a Reed 204. I think the nut for most of the 4" or 4-1/2" reeds will fit--- 104, 204, 404...

Nut is marked 2306-4, or 23064.

I have a VERY early (1912) reed 204 with a cracked main nut, and I'd love to get this old old vise going again....

Thanks!

Very nice Thrumcap. A great service you are doing. I have drawings of a couple others if you or your machinist wants to support more models.

Well thanks! I had a goal of making available a rare part in inventory just to see what would happen. That collar is the first. I may take you up on that offer as I was thinking about doing the 3C collar next summer.

The next rare part is the upsetting block for Greenfield type upsetting vises for blacksmithing.

Looking for a swivel lock handle - cast iron - for a Shapleigh's branded 3 1/2" open screw swivel base vise. Manufacturer unknown, but I'd sure like to know if anyone can shed light on it!

I'm working on repairing a Reed 104 1/2R for use as a personal user. The vise nut only has about 3/8" of threads left in it and the nut itself looks homemade. Does anyone have a main nut that they would like to part with? It doesn't need to be pristine, just usable. Even a nicely repaired nut would suffice. The best I can tell, a nut from any 4" or 4-1/2" R-series will work. Thanks.

It great that you are doing this work for the community.
Was it you or somebody else who was casting replacement collars for Parker vises in various sizes?
I’m not the only one looking for ones like these.

Sorry, meant to post it in the repair thread not this one.

Hello,

What would be the best (price/quality) welder rod (not sure that’s the correct term, I’m referring to the sticks used for arc welding) to fill in the battle scars on the Columbian jaw below?

If I remember correctly, the Columbian vises use a slightly different material than older cast iron vises. Assuming that is the case, will the same rod be the best choice for repairing a crack in a prentiss sliding jaw? If not, what would be the best choice for the prentiss?

The goal would be to repair the vises in a way that is hardly noticeable. I know I could use some kind of cold welding solution (JB Weld, etc) and paint for the Columbian but I would prefer the welding approach and I only have access to a cheap arc welder.

As always, thank you for your help!

I picked up a Reed 204-1/2 a few weeks ago for my main garage vise - I love it, but the handle on the swivel lock nut is missing. I haven't found a date stamp yet, but I'm guessing early 1940's.

Does anybody have a swivel lock nut laying around they could part with? As an alternative, anybody have the means to make a handle for me?

A handle is easy:
  • A long bolt the size of the hole
  • grind the head so its round
  • run a jam nut down so it is bottomed on the threads (after installing)
  • Cut the excess threads off leaving it just slightly proud
  • Peen flat, or as flat as you can
  • dress with a file so it is flat
  • Grind the jam nut round
  • Bobs your uncle.

Thanks, appreciate the response. That's an interesting idea, though it's going to be a lot of grinding - the nut is pretty tight to the vise body, and the end of the handle has to recess almost entirely into the swivel nut counterbore to clear when rotating. I may try to use a button head bolt as a solution for now.
