Agreed. Pull up a chair and stay awhile, Rob. It's no accident that it has always been one of if not thee most gentlemanly threads on GJ, year in and year out. Chock full of character in here.

The label on that Coast to Coast socket set looks like it was inspired by the right side of label Thorsen used, although it does kind of look like it was hand drawn.

Good eye, Stuart. Something about it (maybe the two color only scheme and the simple graphics) just looks even more throwback older than that to me.

First sale was pretty much a bust, a nearly full quart of 3M compound that I do need and a small brass brush for a buck.
Much better the second, a HF table top blaster that needs love,
New job has no blast cabinet and is missed, better than nothing.
an Indestro 1/2 ratchet, frozen but soaking.
4 flex sockets, 3 Craftsman and a SO,

Too bad there are two 11/16 and two 3/4”
A Yankee crank drill,

Small SO box,
And a 50’s Craftsman band saw,


Table is in the e tank, will need to make a new base but in overall great condition.
Happy for $80.

The Kennedy 526-8 Machinists box I picked up Sat had no Key (and was locked) and I think I described how I tried a key that slid in from my main key chain, tried picking it, Tried a half dozen or so (8 actually) from my key collection that also slid home, but would not work it, tried mot picking, then went back to the first key that fit and rattled it around and managed to use that key to "pick" the lock ope. its NOT a good fit at all however it was just dumb luck.

The key on the key ring is the one I "picked" it with:

I thin k its funny the one I picked it with is SO fat off the eagle key sadn also has 4-5 pins...


I removed the lock and it has a number, then I compared the numbers to the keys I had thinking maybe one was close and could be filed to fit...

Dang if one doesn't show 1 number off!

Not clear to me if the number systems are even close, but the numbers match! (Jeff?)

The Eagle key bottoms on the tip, so I'm sure to have a prayer, I need to shave 50 thou or so off the tip. but Jeff do you think I can cut a tad deeper and get to the 8? or is that going the wrong way?

406Rich What a nice find! I've never actually seen a precision vise like that with the hand wheels. I wonder if it was for a lathe or a mill versus a drill press? Did that set you back an arm and a leg? You ought to post that on the vises thread IMO.

This is the you **** find of the weekend! Not only are they uncommon, at least the craftsman badges one’s especially this rectangular logo one but to find them with the jaws is almost unheard of! Great work! I can’t believe you got it at the last sale. Was it hidden by something or was there no price on it?

Agreed, beautiful piece of equipment!

I hit two sales today. Both with their own good finds. The first was my first full family Estate Sale. My daughter (3yrs old last friday) has joined me on a couple but never my now 8 month old son . This could be great fun as a family going forward.

Day 2 of 2 for the estate sale so prices were discounted. Half off. Should I be surprised a good old USA vise was still bolted on the table? A descent amount of tools still around actually.

The Owner was a 90 year old engineer that sold the house and most everything inside and was downsizing with his wife to a condo down south (FL I think). House prices near but outside NYC have huge demand right now and I hear are selling quick and driving prices up. This house had a nice floor plan but was dated everywhere. Sold first day on market. I was sold with the 2 car garage that had direct access to each the house and the basement.

AS for tool purchases:
Rock Island 574 Vise in great condition $50 (smooth open/close and swivel)
Proto 6" crescent wrench $1
Screwdriver set and hammer $5

ChefRex, tell us more about the HF blaster box. How much work does it need?

To get it up to par it needs a TP retro kit for a hundred and gloves for around 30, new "glass" and something to protect it, I have suitable gaskets.
I basically consider it as free with the bandsaw but free is never free.

2nd Sale of the day was a FB Market tool sale. Family was downsizing. Husband selling most of his tools. I don't think I was the first one there. I went for the Craftsman Toolbox. I have one that is rusted all over and the top is held on with screws; I was planning to restore, still might, but couldn't pass up this minty condition one. Found a couple firsts too in his plastic bins.

There were a couple Cman V socket sets I just really didn't need. One was metric and in a case I might should have bought just because I had never seen it before. Long and skinny, oval, plastic. Sockets stand up tall. Outer wall has a break in it the width of the largest socket. Rotate the outer wall around to the socket you want then let it fall out. Interesting.

I finally got the KR560 put back together. Every drawer was full of dents. I think I wore out my body hammer. Every slide was bent. I straightened and draw filed the vertical trim strips and painted them but there isn't much I can do with the aluminum drawer pull strips. Also had to fabricate lock rods and lifts. New lock cylinders. It will get one more coat of paint before I put it to use.

I've been buying stuff out of a business that made theater sets for the past few weeks. Went back today to see what was left found this toolbox in the trash. The guy said it was his grandfather's but he didn't use it anymore and didn't really have room. I can't even imagine throwing away a toolbox that belong to my grandfather. The little art figurines were free also. I bought some shelves that I am going to keep vices on that our custom made and pretty heavy duty for 50 bucks. Bought two chain falls for 20 bucks a piece. I think the one not pictured is the nicer of the two. This one is 110 volt and 1 ton. I love the little bike guy since I'm an antique bike guy myself.

Chain Fall ---- umm I find the term Chain Hoist much more comforting.

Picked up a 4” Columbian vise at Habitat.

Some wrenches -Vlchek (possible old Caterpillar tool), a rough Plomb, a nice PowrKraft, and P&C 3/8 drive socket.

Also a nice short length Craftsman Pro #2 Phillips. Can’t say I had one in my set.

It was a normal -V- metric socket set, maybe 7-8 sockets. Just was a craftsman case I hadn't seen before.

Guy said his dad had the full set of Speed Master tools, these were all that survived. He was older than I, so suspect dad was 90ish at passing.

And a fine tapered slip stone, was with a bunch of straight razors, but the only interesting one (Tree Brand Boker) was trashed.

Passed on an SK Wayne top box, was sort of trashed, and really light weight metal, so figured I had enough problem boxes in the garage to deal with.

I recently visited somebody I know and enjoyed seeing some old tools random from the barn. I expressed my interest in two BE sockets seen in a box of sockets which had some random staff and told that I would be interested in trading some sockets or wrenches for them if they will consider it in the future and are missing some sizes. I guess I got lucky - a neighbor was cleaning the farm today and decided to get rid of the extras. I actually got the box minus one of the two sockets as they were missing the size in another set.
The four sockets on the lead left to right are Craftsman BE, PLVMB, New Britain and vintage Husky from New Britain period.

I don't know if you guys want to see things other than tool related and I would like some feedback on that. Here is a little typewriter picked up for $50 at a local yard sale that I think is pretty cool, along with its leather travel case.

I got in "pre-sale" to look around for tools while the estate company was separating the chaff from the wheat in the over-stuffed garage. Unfortunately for me, the garage was mostly over-stuffed with reloading supplies, gardening and hunting paraphernalia and loads of camping gear--didn't see any Coleman lanterns, though Outlaw. There were tools, but the vast majority were off-shore.

I came away with this mixed bunch of wrenches:

That is an interesting Typewriter. Very small and seems a bit primitive? Does it have a shift key and upper and lower case?
