I had a bit of luck on eBay recently as well. I believe I saw this shortly after the seller listed it. He had an OBO feature with the listing so I rolled the dice with an offer. Got it for far less than I would have been willing to pay for it. I plan on doing some minor repair work on the box lid to keep it from tearing anymore. 4 of the 6 wrenches look as close to brand new as I think I'll find any of these things.

Not sure what sizes were original to the set, but looks like you are off to a good start. My extra set does not have the cool logo, but would certainly trade it for something interesting!

Wow! that's Awesome!

JoeCo, I've had decent luck putting cardboard boxes and labels back together using wood glue. For most work it works well; if its a bendy part you might use Aleene's tacky glue instead as it dried with some flexibility, where wood glues dry brittle. I use it for Speaker repairs for instance.

You ****! Rileysan and I exchanged some texts about this exact set after he checked the sold listings. I am glad they went to a great home for them! That is a set that sits on the shelf because it is so nice!

I'm delighted to hear it was you that got it. I missed out on that listing by barely an hour!

Thanks gents. I've been a bit more diligent about scouring eBay lately after not even seeing some really great artifacts on there! I think I saw these on my second pass of the night so I don't think they were on there long. I was very surprised the seller accepted my offer. Never hurts to try I guess.

I'll try to find some of the glue you mentioned Outlaw. I think wood glue will work for what I have to do on this box but I have had issues with the brittleness of wood glue on some other projects so I'll try that pliable stuff. My tentative plan is to use heavy brown paper (grocery bag stuff, I guess I'll have to refuse the plastic for once). Reenforce the corners from the inside then line the interior of the lid. It's pretty fragile right now. I hate to mess with it too much but if I don't do something it's just going to continue to disintegrate.

Hey, glad to hear the good news! I think that is great!

You know, I wish that more folks like you all were willing to share photos of rare treasures like these. Sure, nearly 100 years ago these would have been fairly common. Today, ≥90% of examples are all used up and/or lost to time. Yet, to find to find new or close to new examples WITH the an excellent condition box. All I have to say is: Wow!

I would have given anything to find the original packaging for many of the ratchets I have been studying. Alas, the packaging seemed to be a low priority for most consumers.

With luck, threads like this will reach that one person who can show use what we've been missing.

Happens to me all of the time. I will have friends, family, our secretary scan for things all of the time. Even with a small army of people scouring all across the web, we miss out on things all of the time.

We always think about the ones that get away. Hahaha!

JoCo, I've even had good luck gluing two torn edges together. The trick is always getting them held in place while the glue sets. Sometime I'm using wax paper so I don't glue the thing I'm using to keep the edges or whatever together, and of course flat toothpicks to "paint" the glue where it needs to be. I try to minimize any squeeze out and wipe what I get off immediately with damp paper towel.

I'm thinking the munged edge corner I saw in one pic. It WILL glue back together if you can get it onto position. Takes patience for sure.

Gear wolf- what is the earliest ratchet packaging you seen in the craftsman brand. I think probably the earliest I have seen is possibly the quick release era?? I haven’t researched how the ratchets were displayed or packaged but I don’t recall seeing much. I wonder if long c and heritage era was a simple price tag on a hook hanger?

Really cool find. Was it this thread someone posted a boxed set before?

If you are referring to a boxed set of dbe’s then yes, rileysan found a boxed set last year. He also found an amazing amount of modern nos craftsman as well. I don’t think anyone would mind if he posted the wrenches again! They sure are nice to look at. I have seen them in person

Ahhh, thank you. I was thinking it was Rileysan. It would be cool to post them together too.

Rileysan- nice find on the sockets. Sorry, no record of exactly which sizes are in the set, but will try and remember to find out, some time in the future when I have access to it.

Thank you!

You have the same problem I do - Those tools that are not my #1 priority get buried. Poor Smoke must be getting impatient by now over my lack of priority given to my Plomb collection after my move!

What, me mind posting these again?!? I'll do it today, tomorrow and next week if you like! :lol_hitti

This is the 4-piece, 15° long DBE set that I acquired from an estate sale I was able to get into early. I found quite a few gems from that sale and wished I had more time and money that day.

I've also seen the 3-piece 15° shorty set on eBay, but like the set purchased by Scott, I was late to that party.

No worries on the plomb! You have so much good craftsman stuff and pressteel tool boxes that I forget about the plomb[emoji23] where else can I see 2 deluxe rollers, made by pressteel?

This Long C grinder has been eating away at me buried in the back of a newly found honey hole. Particularly as it is sporting what I'll assume is the original (or period correct) work lamp along with it. Certainly not a beauty queen, but if anyone in Detroit area is looking, PM me and I'll arrange to drag it out on your behalf. (I'd prefer not to reveal my double secret location)

A couple weeks ago I created a thread on a newly acquired, and possibly unknown examples of 1930s Craftsman tappet wrenches.

This past week, I acquired another variety of early tappet wrench, the ca. 1930-31 model 3006, made by Billings & Spencer of which I have an example to compare with the Craftsman. As an aside, did all B&S wrenches say "Chrome Molybdenum" or did they change to "Chrome Vanadium" like the Craftsman example?

The third Craftsman tappet wrench is from ca. 1931-35. The maker isn't identified by AA but would it be safe to assume it was made by Hinsdale, since they were making other wrenches for Sears at that time?

Brian

This is a follow-up to the question of: When?

I was searching through the catalogs for information on yet another unusual long-c Craftsman wrench I purchased and was fortunate enough to find the answer to my question on the Craftsman 1090D and 1092F tappet wrenches.

They were advertised in the 1932 catalog only. I can find no tappet wrenches of any type in the 1931 or 1933 catalogs so there's no telling exactly how long they were available. The 1932 catalog shows only two sizes of wrenches and offered a 4-piece set (2 of each) that is shown in the illustration.

1932 Tappet wrench.jpg

I want to thank David Maher once again for his work on digitizing these hard-to-find catalogs, thus making it possible to identify these wrenches.

Brian

Show your "Long C" Craftsman!

Ok, who was it that ***** and bought these sets? It was originally listed at $250. Someone bid, the auction was pulled and then relisted at $500 plus shipping and promptly sold. This picture is of the original auction.

I'll volunteer that I was the first bidder at $250. I didn't expect to win the auction with that bid, and I have no problem with someone making an offer to the seller and having it sell early, but dammit! I wanted to fantasize about owning those for a few days, at least!

Whoever bought them - you ****! (No animosity implied)

As awareness increases so will prices unfortunately.

What I used to be able to buy for a more "reasonable" price has greatly changed in the last 5 years. :(

While I was looking through my Channellock tools I took some shots to compare with my Craftsman Vanadium C marked lineman’s pliers. The last picture is of the jaws of a more recent blue handle pair.

Snagged these Vanadium linesman and dykes at the flea this morning. As I was telling some textbuddies, I almost missed them due to the grips, which I generally ignore as a modern affectation when out scavenging. Have to admit, these are both kind of attractive. The maroon worms are Klein. I can't find any name on the yellow geometrics.

Those are in great condition Lugz. I've never seen these in the flesh. I'm assuming the coating on the grips is (or at least was) a pliable vinyl-like material or are they a hard solid similar to the amber handled drivers? Regardless, great find.

Heck, I got so much tunnel vision when I saw your plomb that I totally missed these pliers! Great haul! These are older than most folks think so they often get missed! Nice finds

They're very hard. Not at all soft or pliable.

Thanks. The whole load was full of wonders great and small. HAHA. On the pliers, I've had Vanadium before, but none with plastic grips. It was the grips on these that almost made me miss them.

I'm wondering when these were put on and how. In the 50's and with heat? I suppose it was a kit. They have to be aftermarket. Anybody know the story?

I am not as educated as some of the guys in here but the smaller amber handle ones are craftsman and where sold like that. The Klein grips I believe are an aftermarket addition probably put on with heat? Now you have me wanting to research this

I'm pretty sure the process was - Immerse in boiling water, put on handle (Fast!) and never look back. I seem to recall seeing these as a kid and hearing talk.
