Acetone container cap and spout not sealing

I bought a gallon of acetone for some spraying projects and the cap never properly threaded onto the spout. Every time I opened or closed it, there was a certain amount of finagling involved. I got a little frustrated and took a pair of channel locks to get it open. Of course this made the cap and spout oblong. I tried shaping it back but it just won’t seal.

The container is 90% full.

I’ve got an empty acetone quart container I can dump some of this into.

I also have an metal mineral spirits container. Can I clean that container out (swirl it with acetone) and pour the remaining acetone into the mineral spirits container.

The mineral spirits container has a plastic spout and the acetone container has a metal spout.

I think there is a reason why one has plastic and other is metal. But like Charlie said, give it a try but check it out for few days.

As others have said, you have very little to loose if you try storing if in the mineral spirits can.

I had the same issue with an acetone can, and I put a cork in it. I would NOT put Acetone in a Mineral Spirits can - in 5 years you're going to go to grab some paint thinner, and forget you have acetone in that can...

If you DO go to an alternate container (like a bare unmarked gallon can - available in the paint department of your local paint store) MAKE SURE you put what's in it on the front, so when a 4 year old goes in there and takes a swig, and you have to call poison control, you're not playing 20 guesses while junior is going through convulsions.

When you guys say cork, what do you mean? I’m thinking wine cork but obviously that doesn’t fit. I duct taped the cap & then put a plastic bag and taped it again.

Will experiment with the plastic spout on the mineral spirits gallon jug.

The cap on the quart sized acetone container is one of those flip tops. Won’t fit the gallon container

Your local ACE will have a collection of corks to choose from
the acetone will most likely eat the plastic spout
there is a reason they made a special can for it

Acetone eats some plastics.

I save jars and containers. Glass jars such as pickle jars have metal lids. I also save tru-fuel cans. If you reuse a container properly label it.

I have acetone in quarts that came in plastic bottles. while I imagine it eats some plastics, there are definitely some that it is safe with .

To further prove your point : Acetone-based nail polish remover also comes in "plastic" containers with "plastic" caps. I have a few in my garage (for many years). Haven't had a problem.
