Some more early January scores:

  • Random shell mills that I paid $30 at auction
  • Large end mills for $30 at that same auction
  • An Echo hedge trimmmer practically new I paid $40 at a local yard sale
  • Heavy duty Milwaukee die grinder - $15 off of FBMP! The guy had it listed for $20 for a couple of days. He dropped it to $15. I drove about 40 miles one way to get it.

83Village - That is incredibly awesome. Well past you **** territory.

I wouldn't know what to do with it either, but I am sure you will make right with it, one way or another.

Those Rockwell Portabands are great, but do have one weakness adn users can avoid: Do NOT lat it down on the stop bar. over time the aluminum casting its screwe to wil crack, then break off.

Lay it so that bar is in the air. they will last forever.

I can't recall how many of those I've replaced the guard on to fix them, and seen a few where someone tried to weld it back together.

Yesterday morning tin medic and I drove an hour east of San Antonio to a barn sale with a promising amount of tools, tool boxes and the usual farm/barn implements and paraphernalia. Things started to go south the night before when I noticed several items on the sale list labeled as sold—mostly heavy farm equipment and picnic tables so no big deal. But then there were new shots of half a dozen machinist chests with the draws staggered open and filled with mostly nuts, bolts and rusty crapola. When we got there, we found that not only were the boxes in pretty nasty shape and being sold for premium prices, there was no going through them for any nuggets—they were being sold as “sets”. For individual tools the head guy pointed us to a few plastic bins containing tools that looked like they had been left in the fields for a season or two. There was a Reed 104-1/2 that looked interesting but it was bolted to a welding table that it wasn’t to be separated from. After poking around for 20 minutes, we gave it up and left empty-handed.

In the afternoon I went back for the final day at the sale where I bought the Thorsen tools. They still had a Huot tool box that I had passed on earlier but decided it was a decent buy now for $10. I spent today sprucing it up. Naturally I failed to take a “before” shot but it cleaned up nicely with a good application of Simple Green. The heavy lid had over-g’d the rear piano hinge but I was able to hammer it back in shape and the drawer action improved dramatically after removing some rust and grime from the slides and an application of wax.

In my attempt to date the box, I went to the Huot website where they have catalogs dated ’56, ’61, ’71, ’81 & ’85. My box isn’t shown in any of them. There is a model 110 that has the same dimensions, but two drawers instead of one. The best I could come up with looking at the drawer pull is ‘70s-‘80s.

I can't say I'm really enamored of this style box, but it turned out nice.

Anyway, here is the reassembly after cleaning:

I'm so glad to hear Hout is supportive of the Collectors by posting old catalogs.

Is the box as small as it seems in the pics? dimensions?

Thanks. Today was full of driving all over the place.

First stop was off FBMB, on a lead I thought was a dead-end. Messaged the person a handful of times over a week and a half, with no response. Then out of the blue, I get a response! Set up a time to go look today (about an hour north). Get up there, and it looks exactly as advertised.

Rockwell 12/14 Tilting Arbor Saw! Born in 78, 7.5hp motor. Motor sounds like it may need new bearings, but part of the back fan shroud is also bent, so that may be interfering. Came with a brand new 14" plywood blade, and still has the original mitre gauge, and dust port! They really just wanted it gone, and bonus points that it was going to someone who could use and restore it. The top has a bit of surface rust, but nothing deep (you can see the balf moon where the mitre gage was sitting). Loaded it up for a cool $140 and drove home, grinning all the way. Pics do not convey the sheer size of this thing. Absolutely dwarfs my Unisaw.

Then, since I had made two different trips to grab things this weekend (and I was supposed to work on house projects), my buddy and I went and got this pair of recliners and couch off of Nextdoor. Lady was moving on Tues, and just needed them out of her house. Turns out they are electric recline, American Furniture Warehouse (one local in CO), and barely under 4yrs old. Looking them up, it seems the set retails for about $2000, but since she was out of time, they were listed for FREE!

Overall, ended up with a motor, a power hacksaw, a Rockwell 12/14 Cabinet Saw, and a full set of living room Furniture. All for 270$. Headed out next week back to the honey hole, and should have more old iron to post!121105625_10223350276325981_6952561467834114512_o(1).jpegIMG_20210110_140516.jpgIMG_20210110_140520.jpg1610323510470.jpeg1610323529502.jpeg

Picked up a two craftsman grinders. One being a block grinder. Already tore down the block and getting it ready for paint and new bearings. Sold the newer craftsman already. Got both for $50. Thought that was a pretty good deal

And to close out the weekend, I swung out to a moving sale, picking up the following for $10

A repainted Duplex cantilever toolbox, PowerKraft 1/2 ratchet, and an odd Husky (New Britain) socket set. No ratchet and it goes from 19/32" to 1", but the box seems to fit them well, is the right color for every other NB box I have seen. But nothing like it shows up in any catalogs I have seen. The toolbox is the same size as the K10 Snap-on box, but no stamping or dividers in one of the top parts. It has been painted a couple of times, but will make a good working box.

BMW- that’s an odd box for sure! Post that in the new Britain thread and see what those guys say? Seems 30’s?

Thanks couldn't pass it up. Believe me I tried! I bought just the blue stripe the first day and went back the second day for the rest.

Yeah USA made garden tractor tires are expensive. Another guy on one of the Sears garden tractor Facebook pages had just bought a new set of the Carlisle's, he was a bit jealous.

So started scrubbing on the top, and it is coming right off. This is maybe 1hr worth of effort, just Scotch-brite and WD-40, by hand. And when you see the spray cans, it gives a better idea of scale.IMG_20210111_193813.jpg

Couple of questions, hope you guys can point me in the right direction:

What's the best way to remove damage (to tools) caused by mice? Their fluids (urine?) appears to be corrosive and has ruined the finish of several of my tools.

Is it possible (and worth the effort) to modify a Black and Decker 18v battery pack? I have a leaf blower and screw gun that work perfectly, but the stock batteries quit holding charge.

I figure you guys have dealt with this stuff through picking experience.

Thanks.

First clean the surface with rust remover. There are about a million threads on that. Then clean and wipe with alcohol or acetone. Now you can plate with copper followed by nickel. It is a really simple process and just needs a suitable container, acid, DC supply and source of plating material. You can polish before plating if that is important to you. Lots of youtube videos showing the plating process.

To get rid of the smell in cabinets (tool), natures miracle enzymatic stuff helps, but it takes awhile.

Have some people lost their minds? I picked this 3/8" breaker bar at a Flea Market last weekend, while trolling though nice clean USA $1 wrenches. Seller says "Oh, no!.... That's not a wrench, I have to have $3 for that." I agreed, as I do know the brand has some scarcity and a spirited following. Figure I might wrestle $15-18 bucks out of it online. I just never realized how spirited until I stuck it on Ebay and it found it's way in front of two bidders who apparently can't go on living without it. WOW. I'm going to have to put more diligent eyes on these prizes. My jaw dropped 24 hours ago, and this thing still has several days to run on auction.

Thanks guys. It's amazing how much damage those critters can do...

OOB, “Lost their minds” is relative. Seen as a specific brand that possibly matches your bidders’ classic truck or ag machine, it’s obviously worth much more to THEM than just a functional USA tool.
What would you pay to watch a random professional football game?
What would you pay to watch your favorite team play in the SuperBowl?

Good thing you didn't throw it up there for BIN $15!

Wowsers! I knew people paid stupid money for Snap-on and Wilton Baby bullets. I guess we can add International brand tools to the list...

Wow indeed! Over fifty bux - stupid money ... umm ... then again, I have paid, well, maybe only dimwit money, for a rare addition to my collection, and hope to be able to do it again.
