united rentals overcharged me

So I rented a scissor lift then decided that I should just buy one because it was taking me forever to do the job I was using it for. So after I left the rental place with the scissor lift I verified with the guy at the desk if I owed anything else on the unit I rented and he said no it should stay the same. They were the ones that dragged their feet on picking it up since they assumed I was going to either buy that unit or another unit on the lot which is what I did. So for keeping the unit for a couple extra days that charged me an additional $275.00 on top of the $651.00 What kind of bs is that. He said it was okay I kept it a couple extra days because their was a grace period. I hate checking my credit card statements. I placed a dispute with visa and they credited me back the difference. Should I call united rentals in the morning and see what happened or just see if they notice that I disputed the charge? What a bunch of bs. I'm venting here, sorry guys.

I think now that you disputed the charge it's really up to your card company to what happens next. They will probably reach out to the rental company on your behalf.

Why didn’t you call them to start with?

Cause it's a sunday and they're closed. Probably should have waited, but I really don't feel like spending another day taking care of stupid things like registration renewals and property taxes.

I have always had great dealings with UR. AFAIC, if you called for pickup and they were late, they can't charge you. Happened to me a few times. I wasn't charged.

I'm just pissed that the guy lied to me and said that even though I kept it a couple extra days before calling for pickup that it will still be the same amount because they have a grace period. The part that really irritated me was that I called after a couple days and they were supposed to tell me how much it would be to keep it longer and nobody called back. It was their after hours line and the lady couldn't answer that question.

Rental charges with UR and Sunbelt stop the moment you 1)Call them and request a pickup, or 2)Return the unit to their facility yourself. It sounds like you pulled the unit out of their yard, but they picked it up at the end of the rental. The additional $275 could be a pickup fee to come get the machine?

As for the cc issue, one should always give another the opportunity to explain and discuss unexpected charges.

What date did the rental start, and what date did you call to request the unit be picked up?

What does your contract say about a grace period?

It doesn't say anything about a grace period. I think he was saying it's cheaper the longer I keep the machine over time so that's why the bill wasn't going to change even though I cancelled it two days late.

I'm just going to call the credit card company back and dispute the whole charge. Looking at the rental sheet here they charged me for the equivalent of an entire month when I had the machine for 9 days.

It's $491.00 for an entire month plus two $179.66 charges for pickup and delivery. Then some $4.78 environmental charge whatever that is. I wonder if they're charging me a rental fee for that scissor lift I bought.

They don’t charge you anything once you call it off rent.
When you call in, they will give you an off rent confirmation number and they will come pick it up when they have time.

I’ve had machines sit on a job site for a week after we called it off rent because they were to busy to come and pick I up. They don’t charge you extra for that.

Give them a call and see what the extra charges were for. Could be a pick up fee or maybe you damaged something on it.

I called and they said it's because I kept it an extra couple days over.

I guess I’m not understanding something then.

If you kept it longer than you were supposed to, of course they are going to charge you extra for it.

Grace period for any rental does not mean FREE for an extra "couple days." Imagine returning a rental car on a Monday when it was due back on a Friday - you're going to pay for it. Doesn't matter what Sally or Fred or John says, unless it's in writing.

The fact that this is now a surprise for you after reading your credit card statement is mind boggling to me. You should have settled the bill with them in detail as soon as you got there, before you bought anything. Maybe shame on them but shame on you too.

I'm surprised you immediately went to your credit card and disputed the charge just because the business was closed over the weekend. I wouldn't be surprised if United Rentals puts you on a blacklist.

That seems pretty cheap.

Wow. I did the math. You paid $76 more than renting for the whole month. Seems excessive to me too. Call and speak with the manager bet they take care of you.

Why would I care? There's a rental company on every street corner around my area.

What does your contract list for daily, weekly and monthly rates?

You had the lift for 9 days before taking it off rent. It sounds like they charged you the weekly rate for the first 7 days and then daily rate for the last 2 days.

Generally(at least around here) if you have something on rent for 2 days or less, they'll charge daily rate, more than 2 days they will charge weekly rate, more than 2 weeks monthly rate.
United isn't in business to screw people over, they want to keep renting to customers and can't do that by ******* people off. Give them a call and try to figure it out, though you've probably overly complicated this whole thing by getting the CC co involved before talking to UR.

What's your invoice say? it should be pretty cut and dry.

I called this morning and they were waiting for the person who Dealt with me initially to come in. Then I called again a few hours later and they said they'll call me back they're busy right now. See why I just dispute it with the cc company? Much easier that way. Although if they would have called me back a week ago to let me know how much it would cost to keep it longer I would have told them to just pick it up that day, but I'm not a very good baby sitting. Atleast they have a record that I requested them to call me and never got a call back.

The credit card company erased the charges, but I assume they also explains that is only temporary pending resolution of the dispute between the cc company and the rental company.

In other words, if the rental company doesn’t agree to drop the charges, since you exceeded the rental time agreed to, the cc card company has the right to rebill you.

I expect they are shorthanded due to the rona just like everyone else. You lost any leverage you had once you immediately ran to the credit card company before talking to them. I expect they will charge you as much as possible now. I would.

I called them last night. I doubt they even know I called them.

I may be missing something, but I don't understand why you thought they weren't going to charge you more money for keeping the rental longer.

Unless you call and specifically tell them to take the equipment off rent they're going to assume you still need the stuff and charge you accordingly.

I was given bad information by the rep at the rental place. I cancelled the dispute and will go down there in person tomorrow if I don't hear back today.

That's the right thing to do. Just keep your cool no matter how the conversation is going. Getting P.O'd will get you nowhere fast.

They called me and gave me a complete refund on the rental and just charged me for the two $179 pickup and delivery charges and said sorry for the hassle. That works for me.

All the big guys stop the charges when you call it off rent, or call for pickup or say your done with it.

The grace period is the time from that phone call to the time they pick it up.

If it’s another week and you run it 40 more hours, you get that time for free since they usually ask for the hours when you call it off rent. Or it could be the next day. Either way that’s the grace/free time.

You keep it a couple days past your weekly rental, their going to charge you the daily rate for those days, until you call it in.

THEN they stop charging you

Read what you signed when you rented it, it’s all explained

Exactly. Grace period STARTS when you call it in/off rent. If they’re too busy to come get it, you get a few days grace. Not that you call on day 10 expecting the extra 3 days for the originally weekly rate

If you booked it for a week, and kept it 9 days, and called on day 9, then your paying for one week at the weekly rate and two days at the daily rate. Which is about right, depending on the machine 1.5-2.5 weeks equals a month rate

Your credit card company will get the vendors attention when they claw back the payment.

And united will show them the contract he signed, provide records of the phone call dates and times, and OP will still pay for it.

United is a international Multi billion dollar company, they don’t get to that by screwing people over. Nor does what anyone says on the phone negate the signed paperwork, which has been developed by some very expensive legal team

The fact OP freaked out they weren’t open on a Sunday, and now disputed the whole charge because he doesn’t understand what he signed up for explains how he is. Hes the Karen of the rental world and wants everything for free because they’re not catering to him 24/7/365

The amount they charged didn't even make sense. I didn't even have to argue with them or explain anything when they called me back later today. They just said were going to just charge for the pickup and delivery since you did buy a unit from us, sorry for the hassle. I was just I a bad mood yesterday because someone did the same thing to me because they didn't bother reading the invoice I sent.
