Heres the premature start of my build thread. Yesterday I pulled the trigger on a new shop to house a couple of my cars. 2 years ago my wife and I moved into town and I had to leave my 30x40 polebarn behind for a 20x24x8 attached garage. The last 2 years I made the best of it. I painted the OSB, threw up some wainscotting, and called it good. I kept my Porsche 914 in it for the summer and my wife squeezed her 330i in for the winter.

DAS Laden Hacken.

So I was looking for a name for my shop. For the title of my build thread of course. Back in 93, a buddy of mine threw the name The Chop Shop out for our combined effort of building low dollar hotrods in an old cinderblock addition to a barn. We were chopping the top on an S10 at the time. It didnt come out great. Lol. I held onto this name for years but now it seems everyone uses it for their garage, barber shop, etc. Not coming up with a new name I liked, I punched it into google translate for a german translation. It's an absolutley terrible translation as it appears to be more of a meat reference...chop....but it kind of sounds good so I'm sticking with it.

Last fall I got ahold of a local builder and asked him to pencil me in. He was backed up to this summer. We had our third meeting yesterday and will start on a new 30 wide (gable front), 24 deep carriage house with 10' ceiling and a 14-6x24 FROG. It's small, but I already had to pull a variance to go that big and that tall. Plus I still have the attached garage that the wife can call her own. My plan is to have 2 cars in here tops. Something I never liked about my 30x40 polebarn was it never really felt like a finished space even though it was sheet rocked, painted and had epoxy floors. This being a smaller shop, I should be able to go further with it.

Heres a shot of my current attached garage ready to bust at the seams.

Re: Das Laden Hacken

This should be a nice build. How long to get the variance and permit? BTW, if you would add your general location to your info, it might be easier to understand your build process. Thanks for sharing!

Re: Das Laden Hacken

Profile updated....

Thanks. My builder met with the zoning guy 2 weeks ago and got a verbal ok. The village offices have been closed due to covid and just opened this week so he is hoping to have permits by next week and get moving on the foundation in 4 weeks. The windows are listed as a 8 week build time. Hopefully covid doesnt have the window company too backed up.

Re: Das Laden Hacken

First sign of progress. My builder has the permits! The zoning rules limit a garage at 12' of height which is ridiculous but I'm getting my 23'. I'm also getting away with a little more square footage than the math allows when you add up green space to building space.

I also got the updated price after upgrading my garage doors, windows, and a few other small changes. Im now at $69 a foot for the shell. The sticker shock is wearing off and I'll be way happier with the quality parts.

If the weather cooperates, I may have a crew on site next week to start the foundation. The windows are 8 weeks out and the trusses 4-6.

Re: Das Laden Hacken

Things are getting slightly more interesting. Our foundation wall is close to being finished and the floor should be poured by the end of next week.

The wife and I had our first beer in the new shop!

Re: Das Laden Hacken

And our foundation is done. Concrete was poured wednesday. Pretty hot and humid out all week. Floor was cut the next day and it rained friday night. I have the day off today so I'm trying to keep it wet.

Progress pics from the builder today. The trusses are still a couple weeks out but they are building and painting the walls in his shop.

That’s amazing because I had thought of building something the same way. You will need a crane or telehandler, but I like the idea.

Years ago I had plans for a prefab workshop that I cannot find. Can’t find any old reference to it on the interwebs either.

The downside is transportation and the need for a telehandler on site. We are in town but a fairly rural area. The builders shop is 2 miles down the road.

But if the builder has those things, it'll be up in a day. Are you just using LP SmartSide as the sheathing as well?

I'm leaving the painted t1-11 as the siding for now. When we restore the outside of our house, I'll make the garage match. It's just up in the air right now.

Okay so that's T1-11 then, is there OSB or plywood under that? Or is that also the structural sheathing?

Curious if they have a weather barrier under there.

Prefab in temp/humidity controlled building jig makes for great building. In the northeast we are seeing more and more of this style housing being built. Wiring and plumbing already in walls, windows installed. Nice looking building you will have there shortly.

I like the garage build you have going on.

This YouTube link below shows a builder (Ken’s Karpentry) in the NE
Who seems to prefab all his walls in his shop, transport them in a trailer to the site, attached the T-111 and sometime builds the smaller trusses in his shop also. Larger jobs, he seems to order them and places them Either with a crane kit a telehandler.

Beautiful Mach. Definitely my favorite color. I had a mystichrome terminator a few years back and always kinda preferred the looks of the Mach.

Haven't put any updates up in a few days. Roofs done and the subfloor is in upstairs.

It was a big week for me. After a 3 month wait, my garage doors are in. The builder also moved out 90% of what he had in the garage and gave me the go ahead to move in.

I'm meeting with an electrician next week.

Been a while without an update. Electricians were out and now im waiting for inspection. I Decided to do a new service to the house and garage. Doing away with my old overhead service that runs next to the neighbors old willow tree. I now have a new pole and transformer on the back corner of my yard and will have an underground service to the garage and then underground from the garage to the house.

I have 16 led 4' double fixtures, back wall has outlets every 4', a 220 dead center for my welding machine, a future 220 for a lift, a 220 for a minisplit, and lots of room left in my panel.

Based on your Avatar, I was disappointed to not see a Cobra in your car collection.

Me too. Lol. My Avatar is my old 82 GT. I let that go a few few years ago before moving. Wasnt one of my more useable cars. Blowthru setup with a big turbo, glide, and all rod end suspension.

I think if I went that far, since the house is now a sub-panel off the garage which is now the main panel, I would also put in a transfer switch to make a future generator easier.

Nice shop by the way!

Looks great! Don't see yellow buildings very often but in your case you pulled it off very well!

What's your plans for finishing the inside?

Thanks. Its a bit brighter than I wanted but...

The plan for the inside is to keep it looking old school. Probably a mix of dark painted drywall and some wood siding or shiplap.

Its been a long while since I made an update. I ended up having issues with the T1-11 having delamination issues. My guess is it sat in a connex during the covid shutdown and got hot and wet.

we installed cedar siding over it hoping that solves my problems. 2 year later and all is well.
