After waiting for the green paint to dry I called in the big guy to lift the clock top into place

2021-02-03 15.32.51 by don long, on Flickr

The clock tower is 2 feet higher than my forklift reaches. My neighbor is building his new home so I asked him to stop by with his long reach machine.
We lifted the clock top with one fork and used vice grips to keep it from sliding.

2021-02-03 15.36.30-2 by don long, on Flickr

We drove it back down the driveway and over to the diner driveway for installation. I ran the manlift up to guide the clock top onto its perch

2021-02-03 15.41.53 by don long, on Flickr

After it was in place I took off the vice grips and had the neighbor back out of the clock

2021-02-03 15.42.06 by don long, on Flickr

and here it is tonight all fastened down

I didn't really get the overall size of the clock until seeing you next to it, that is one massive piece. Well done all around Don, I know that was a ton of work to get to this point.

Unruh I just found it.
That was a surprise :shocking: I didn't know they were going to show that clip.
A buddy of mine was on the program when these guys did a V.W. van he was the buyer for it. He set me up for an interview with these guys. Just Shaun and 1 camera guy showed up and spent about an hour here and they said that they would let me know if something was going to happen and they said that they would be back to shoot again after the car was done and that was the last I heard of it until tonite.

We've been watching "Rust to Riches", and as soon as Shaun walked into the garage, I told my wife "That's Don Long's Garage! And there's Don Long!" It was great to see you and your collection on video!

I am going to have to go back and look for it. I think there was only one VW van on the show.

Clock is looking good and like others I’m looking forward to you finishing it up. You’ve timed this nicely with your neighbors house build cause I’m guessing he doesn’t own that huge lift snd he’s just renting it for a few weeks?

Sorry to hear you lost your renter cause I’m guessing he was a great person too.

Keep up the great work

It is a biggy and very heavy, hard to move around but a great piece for the yard.

It's just a short conversation about a concept car they are recreating and wanted to see if I might have an interest in buying it after the build.

It was in the last episode of season 2 where they build the '60 Plymouth XNR.

My neighbor owns that tractor and plans to store it over here when his house is finished. Our renters were as good as one could ask for. We will miss them

I know you have put the brakes on buying more cool stuff for your Party garage and property, but having access to a bigger fork lift might help you TRADE for stuff to put up higher now?

I just drove by an active Sinclair gas station yesterday and I hadn't seen one for years.

maybe rent the little house out as a B&B and maybe as a perk a party garage access to repeat visitors you like instead of a monthly rental?

cheers!!

I'm not stopping buying neet stuff for the party garage or the western town just not buying things that need work until I clear out some of the projects that are already here.
We have rented the back house so I can get back to my garage again.

Don, it looks like I need a good whack on the head to get me moving. You are getting a ton of stuff done and it all looks amazing.

Don't do that Bob
I'm finding it harder and harder to get out in the garage these days. I'm sure that things can wait til we are ready to get them done. We need to enjoy the time we have left.

I finally took the time to get a shot of the new wagon for my western town. I ran over to Arizona and picked it up last Friday

We are making some progress on the bank too.

Awesome as usual Don! I enjoy your vision, work ethic, and high standard of quality in every project you take on. I spoke to a guy who owns three collision shops in Western New York and was showing him some pics of my place. I told him about your amazing place and he already knew your name before I told him. You're a legend mister!!! Thanks for sharing!!

I bet you received a few thumbs up and some funny looks with that wagon on your trailer on your trip from Arizona. of course i bet it's not the first time people have passed you and shook their heads or smiled. nice find and it looks perfect in it's new home.

I was watching some highlights on the golf channel of the PGA that is at Pebble Beach (love that Monterey coastline and that golf course) and I noticed they have a Starter's clock sort of like yours with Rolex in the clock face. it had a 1919 date on it. then when searching for a good picture to cut and paste i saw another public course in Florida has one and i think that one had a 1914 date on it.

I decided to not post any pictures on your thread from the internet just in case, but thought it worth mentioning. It sounds like you might have it all figured out, but maybe if you need help you can find out who services some of these other old clocks.

keep up the good work and glad to hear you found a good renter.

THanks for the visit and kind thoughts. I went back over your thread again and enjoyed it alot. I noticed a Prowler in your avatar. How do you like it?
What is the name of the bodyshop owner? I may know him from our old bodyshop days. I knew a lot of guys across the country because of my work in the national bodyshop organization.

Looks great Don, I'm excitedly waiting for the clock reveal. For some reason I find those type of clocks and old lamp posts very interesting.

My clock has a 1934 date in the casting. We have a clock guy here on the GJ. that has offered his expertise with getting the clock working and he is in Palm Springs about 45 minutes away.

I just bought the Prowler in December so I actually haven't driven it yet, lol.. (technically I backed it up about 150' down to the garage in the back) and here it sits. I changed some suspension parts, speakers, tires, etc... basic needs, it only has 18K miles. I've driven one once and thought it was cool and since I sold my '32 I thought I'd see if I like the Prowler.
The body shop is Northeast Collision and I know Jay Fisher, (him and his brother are partners) but he's trying to get away from the business and enjoy the fruits of his labor. I passed along some pics of your place (I have them in my phone because it's the ultimate ManCave!) and as expected, he went nuts! I believe he's starting his collection now.
You've inspired a lot of people with all of your posts, it's really an awesome place and I'm so happy for all of your success. Keep them coming!!

Thanks Shopnut.
The Sinclair sign across the driveway has a red border so I thought I'd tie the clock in with the red outline around the clock face.

You should enjoy the prowler, it is a very responsive car with a fairly stiff suspension. The only problem I have with mine is I can't see out of it with the top up. Mine has just over 5K on it . I don't recognize your friends name but feel free to share what you have.
Those are very kind words Wally
thank you

I finally made it out to the garage this afternoon and should have stayed in the house.

First thing that went wrong was that I missed a 3" section on the clock ring so I had to repaint one of them. :dunno:

Next problem and a huge set back was when I went to move one of the clock faces and get one fixed to the good clock ring, When I set it on the ring I misaligned it just a bit, but when I went to align it the damn thing snapped. Now I have 4 pieces of clock face instead of one (it was a glass circle)

Now I must figure out a way to remake it.

Dang it I also hate those one step back days that stop forward progress. i'm sure you'll figure something out.

just curious if you might make a call to ROLEX and see if they have an extra clock face available since the one I saw at Pebble Beach had their name on it?

or maybe your clock guy has a source so you don't have to glue yours back together.

stuff happens, but like the ceiling in your guest room repairs take care of most of it. as long as you are healthy and eating well and smiling most of the time that's all that counts.

sending a little good luck your way too with a prayer cause I'd sure like to see both of you again with all the improvements you've made.

I took the good clock face to my sign shop and asked them to make me a plastic one since the face I gave them was plastic (I guess the last guy had the same bad luck)

I'm sure your clock will still be one of the nicest around, but again sorry for your loss.

nice work on the sheetrock cause it certainly is an art the pros do that we try to match when only doing a little at a time. Honestly I really hate working above my head and my old arms tire way too fast.

are you getting any of this cold blast or are you still in shorts walking out to do whatever you have on your to do list?

it doesn't snow up here often, but as you saw it did Saturday and even though it's melting as we speak it's a mess now.

Oh my
My arms hurt just looking at that. I used to really enjoy hanging and finishing drywall. Pat and I hung 72 twelve foot sheets in this house when we bought it. But since I tore my rotator cuffs it's not fun anymore.
I'm sorry for the setback on the clock but I know you will find a cool fix.

It wasn't one of my best days either but had to get done because Ann wants to redo this house with new paint inside and new floor coverings so the ceiling had to get put back together. It's done and over so back to my garage for more fun things.

I thought of that but didn't like seeing the cracks. Thought about that flex seal product that fixes everything.

Dry wall is not too bad to hang on the wall but the ceiling is much more challenging and I hated every minute of the 4 hours spent playing in that room.

Ugh, what a bummer!!

Nobody but us here will know by looking at it if it's replaced with plastic but losing the originality sure *****.:(

Thanks Homebody

The sign shop is in the process of making me new clock faces so I can get past this lil set back.

At least it's not freezing down here and the drywall mud dried up pretty quickly. It's like spreading bondo, The smoother you get it on the easier it is to sand flat plus the texture hides your sins really well.
Yes we are a few degrees cooler here than normal and the shorts got put away a couple of months ago.

Today Is the first day that I've felt good in a couple of weeks (since the fall out of the man lift I think)
I spent the whole day in the shop playing. I have managed to get the old 1920's air compressor into the booth and painted it black. I also put an old wood burning stove in there for Pat my neighbor and got it painted too. And as long as I was pulling the trigger I finished a lil project that I've been messing with, an old pennzoil pouring can that I painted red with the clock rings.

The compressor

That's true ZRX61 but mine was a milk glass and being that it is up so high I think that 3/16 plastic will fit the bill and I have a sign co. making two of them for me
