Not sure if this is the right forum section, but I know if I put it in Free Parking, I won't be able to search it, so I'll try here. I've got a 2hp pump motor on the pool that is obviously on its last legs. It's got to be close to 10 years old,and it makes a horrific shrieking sound which sounds like dry bearings or some such. Really, really loud; you can't stand within two feet of it for more than five minutes without some temporary hearing loss. So it's pretty bad. I know nothing about these things, but I wonder if it can be rebuilt. I'm also considering re-purposing it if I can get it rebuilt, as I can get a replacement of lesser rating to use on the pool pump, which would definitely be quieter, and probably more energy efficient. If it can be reliably repaired, what potential uses could I have for it in the garage? Has anyone here done such a thing? I can post up particulars about the motor if needed.
Thanks!

If you can do the work yourself, change the bearings. A shop will charge to much for labor. I called a motor shop and has told it would be cheaper to buy a new motor then to have them replaced the bearings. I'll do it myself.

The pump motor can be repaired easily by any motor shop. Look in the yellow pages in your area. The motor is sized to the pump and system flow requirements. Do not replace it with a smaller HP motor unless you use a lower speed motor also. A motor shop or the pump manufacturer can help you figure out what size motor you need at a slower speed.

I had that problem once
took it out and down to the pool shop
they tore it down, put new bearings and a seal while I waited
cost me $50

Pool pumps are pretty specific about what type motor they will accept. The motor mounting pattern, shaft length and configuration have to be exact to fit the seals and impeller correctley.

Google your pump model number and you may find some motors that will be compatible with your pump.

Now might be a good time to look at replacing the motor and pump as a unit, depending on the condition of the pump.

Also, if it is very old, replacing it with a new one may also lower your electric bill, if you run your pool pump a lot. The motors on newer models tend to have lower starting currents and are quieter and more efficient than what was out there ten years ago, particularly if the old one was not equipped with a high-efficiency motor to begin with...

If you do decide to replace it, Don't go lower on HP than what your original setup was, without doing your homework...for example, if you have solar pool heating panels up on your roof, you need adequate pump power to lift the water column up to your roof...

If you go with just a motor be sure you get the rotation correct.
Pump motors have a threaded shaft for the pump impellor.
It has to be right to work.

And ask them to double check it before shipping.

I have a real nice motor sitting on the shelf because the box was mislabeled.
They would take it back but the return shipping was more than the motor.

So, what to do with a spare 2HP motor? A few projects come to mind, table saw motor, 12" disc sander, belt sander, HP washer, cut off saw.............

So far, nothing.
The rotation dosn't fit anything I have in the works.
I do keep my eyes open at garage sales for a pump that goes the right way.
(It all has to do with witch side the outlet pipe is on.)

I've replaced my pump/motor twice. The first time was just motor. I looked at the tag and got the manf. info. I called them to get the replcement motor part # The sold me one for about 100 bucks. Well, a few years later the pump was shot So I went on Ebay and got a real nice Hayward pump/ motor for 60 bucks, shipping was extra.

Hey, I know I'm in wrong spot of the forum but I read that you are looking for 67 galaxie. I have one here in cali. It's not real nice but not much damage. Has a 351w with less than 10,000 miles. Needs tlc but sounds way better than 6,000 for a pile. Have it on Craigslist for 2500. My email is [email protected]. if you want pics let me know.
