Exactly as stated above. If u got 2k cash just buy a used snap on. For 2K you can get one in great condition.

If only they were as plentiful as everyone states online.

I started searching for one last January. Short of driving across the country there's nothing in my area.

I was in DC the past couple days. Saw a few nice boxes on fb there but yeah, how do I get one home? Here at home nothing goes for those prices.

Right now is not the time to be looking for a pro quality truck box. As far as I know the 3 major brands are around 10 weeks out for new boxes and I was told Mac isn't even taking orders, so no new boxes no used trade ins or used boxes on Craig's list.

One more thing to blame on Covid.

No kidding. Maybe in a major metro area its possible to run across these deals more often, but I know where I am at every SO box listed is $$$ or its through the dealer who wants $$$.

Yes u r correct. I live in a large city in Texas and these deals that u r mentioning r here for the taking. At least twice a month I can get a 1022 for 1700-2000. Triple bay KRLs r more desireable running 3k give or take a couple hundred. 7022 go for 1500-1800. If the OP is in a large city with these types of deals I would at least look into it.

I'd love to see a triple bay krl for 3k. At that price I'd have to think it's stolen or there is still a lein on it. I'm in San Diego and I can't even find a classic 78 for 3k.

Every area is different, but their are a lot of people in poverty where I live(also a lot of people doing well). Whatever the circumstances may be they are plentiful in my area. And even when you’re selling one that cheap it’s hard to get rid of because I just don’t think a lot of people have money where I’m at. Already had a toolbox in my garage but I purchased a KTL 1022 two years old with a bedliner top for 1800 just because it was too good of a deal to pass up. In gloss black and metallic red too. I guess maybe I’m fortunate to live in an area like this as far as toolboxes are concerned. Yes I definitely understand if you live in a rural community you’re not gonna get the same deals.

Around here (Toronto area) used Snap-on box are like gold. Anything that's still in good shape starts around 50% of list, and is usually higher than that. No way there's ever going to be a KTL 1022 for less than $6,000, and they would probably be asking way more. I envy you guys where the used stuff is so cheap!

I got quoted on a new KCP1423 here in Canada recently. Going through S-O financing offered a $1500 rebate and after trading mine in at $750 the total owing after taxes was just over $5,800. I would have paid in full within a week to avoid interest, but even my rep himself couldn't touch that price if I paid cash upfront. A used 53" version he had on the truck he wanted $5k for. Private used ones I found were $4.5k and up for 53" boxes. Prices are crazy here.

My Styrke box I went with is 3" taller and 4" deeper than the KCP1423. Grand total with taxes BEFORE trade in of my current box is just over $5,300.

For me if you're spending that kind of money id want a 30" deep box. I'd watch facebook marketplace and Craigslist, there are some great deals out there.

Exactly what ian said. You can easily buy a barely used snap on for 20% of msrp. I just bought a 1022 with an msrp of 12k with top for 2k that was less than a year old. That makes any icon seem way overpriced. I also couldnt stress more the importance of getting a 30 inch deep box with a height of 46 inch. Wall space is always a premium so buying tallest and deepest possible gets you the largest capacity without taking up more wall space. Because of the dimensions, my 54 inch snap on is larger than the 73 inch icon for a lot less money. And mines already depreciated. I can sell it tommorow for what I paid. That icon will be worth 1500 the second it leaves the store.
Edit: sorry didnt realize this was the same thread i commented on a week ago with the same comment. So stupid sometimes

Used box prices are way down atm bc many millions of folks are struggling with massive layoffs and massive inflation. Depreciation on big ticket items is difficult to justify during good times, right now it’s just silly on boxes bc the market’s flooded so personally I’d suggest buying used and haggling over a big stack of greenies.

Cheapest 72" box I've seen here was a KRL 1022 for $3500 as of late, and that was a couple hours from me, not to mention $1k above what I was willing to spend. You guys crack me up with these massive truck box deals, because I have YET to ever see one and I usually watch the market pretty closely.

I'm probably an anomaly here, because I'm going in a slightly different direction. My next buy will be 2 of Harbor Freights 44" boxes. I haven't decided yet if I will tie them together with a framework like I've done in the past, or use them with a maple top for a workbench. I don't get the hate for the depth, because I'm used to my 18" deep Mac box that I've had for years, that never failed to help me put food on the table.

Haven’t ever used Extreme but I’m very happy with my US General ones. I’d go with Icon since at least I could look at those in person before buying.

I just got the us g 72" top & bottom home & unboxed & for me in my home shop it's overkill, but it will give me a little extra room & won't need multiple boxes, although I went back & got the matching cart. At 59yrs old this should last me forever but hey you never know. I'll update when it's fully loaded & in place but everything I see now indicates it should hold up well. I must say my HF experience the last 2 days has been great, manager went over & above, very happy with their service, gave me 40% off on the matching 5 drawer cart.

If you’re still in FtW then you’re pretty well centered in my search area, which is Detroit down to Indy and out to the east side of Chicago, ~4 hour trip. Not sure what exactly your criteria are, but I picked up two KR1000s this fall, $400 for one just above Indy and another for $700 out by Gary. They’re only ~55” but about the heaviest duty box SO ever made. I regularly see clean larger Space Stations and Classics ~60-70” for a grand or so used. IMHO the only “trick” to finding deals is to look regularly and use general terms like “Snapon box,” if somebody knows the model then they prob also want a bazillion bucks for it.

Yeah, I'm still there, but I don't drag my searching out that far because I don't have a truck or trailer to close the deal. So I primarily keep my searching within an hour of home.

Oh my yes.......I'm in love. This sucker is a freaking TANK.

IRXcqP.jpg

Even kinda matches my car.....sort of. Close enough for government work.

IRXU0Z.jpg

Delivery was a **** shoot. It was shipped through a carrier who's smallest liftgate was a 42' semi........so no go. I went with a buddy and his truck/trailer and brought it home. It initially seemed like it was going to be a MAJOR chore to get it uncrated and off the trailer, but in reality, the worst part was getting the trailer backed into my garage given I have a rather steep driveway.

It's in it's permanent home in that corner splitting the two parts of my garage, no worse for wear. Now comes the fun of moving tools and cleaning the mess that's left over from all the shifting things around (the shelf above and the cabinet behind the old box were flipped on that wall before).

Is it too late to suggest two chests?

Everybody has a big big rollaway but it never gets rolled around that much since it's so heavy. Not just DIYer but in shops too IME.

You have hours of fun ahead loading up that box!

Everything is moved! Really digging the extra space. Almost all my wrenches in a single drawer.

That said.......it's going to be FOREVER before I finally settle on organization. I think it was 7-8 years before I was content with my old box.

Yep. Signed, sealed, and delivered, and moved in too.

I figured I'd ask a little high at $750 because I couldn't find any comparable boxes for sale. Some similar, but I've yet to see one with the full bottom drawer like mine had.

Put it up last night, had one guy contact me pretty quick, but he's 6 hours away. Then this morning had another message, and looked at the profile. Older gentleman in rural OH about 2+ hours away. I told my wife right after I sent him a message back. I had a gut feeling and I was right. Farmer, loves the Craftsman BB Griplatch boxes, wanted it because of the single big drawer. He got back to me offering $700 and to pick it up asap, so I said sure.

Heck of a nice guy too. We stood around talking life, cars, and general conversation for about 2 hours afterwards.

Would imagine be flexibility in price due to color .
If can get mac matco or snapon used at sensible deal it simply best way spend on boxes .
In 30 years professionally I always jumped on good used truck boxes, some to use and some to flip . can pretty much use boxes for no charge as possibility of no depreciation of asset .
Times have changed and with online sales platforms market on used boxes improved for the seller so while still good buys it takes more effort and bit more cash get what you want .

Awesome box fastbird! I’ve been kicking getting the rx 55” sometime down the road also looking at the 60” Tekton/rousseau box. I would love to see more pictures of it if you don’t mind. Maybe some close ups of the casters, and measurements of the drawers and other little details and such. I can’t really find much on the internet or good up close pictures of these boxes.

Id go Craftsman or Husky if it were me.

I have the Craftsman US made Industrial 52" top and bottom. As a hobbyist, it fits my needs, but after 6 years the latches on some drawers are starting to get wonky. Overall, I'm happy with it. Especially since I got it at the Sears closeout store for just under $1,200 for the top and bottom.

I'll try to accommodate that after my work schedule calms down this week.
