could i use these for tool storage?

i came across this randomly tonight. the metal drawers hold a good amount of weight & they are pretty dam cheap. i will be building a new desk really soon. i was thinking of a way to put a tool chest underneath, then i was going to mount a countertop on the top. i think this would come out to alot cheaper & seems like something that could be fun to build.
i can have 2 rows of these metal drawers going from the floor to about 30" in height & a few feet wide.

i wanted to share this with all of you. maybe someone else can use this to make a custom tool storage unit? maybe someone needs a few extra shelves?

how would you build something to hold the shelves in?

Not that hard to make something like that. Lots of free material around like stoves, washers and dryers etc. Even easier if you make up some type of brake. Do a search for a DIY sheet metal brake (gingery brake) for many types available.

I bet the cost of those metal drawer inserts will add up quickly.

You might want to consider a couple of short toolboxes with the top of your choice as a desk surface. A couple of companies offer these work stations in several combinations.

Making the cabinet carcass and face frame is standard cabinetry, not my realm of expertise.

Those discontinued Lee Valley drawer inserts don't look too difficult to make. The back corners aren't closed. The front/pull is probably separate from the bottom/sides/back, and spot welded on. Pop rivets could be substituted for welding or soldering. Yup, I could make these pretty easily.

If you really like those, maybe you could find someone to make them for you.

Making one wouldn't be very cost/time effective, but say 10 or 20...

You could have someone form the 2 pieces and then do your own drilling, riveting and final assembly to save money.

Give it a go. You have to start somewhere and sometime. If ya screw it up, learn from it.

Do a little bartering. A friend, or a friend of a friend, has the skills to build you a tool cabinet. You have the skills to make his or her car shine. Trade.

if your still looking for something like this- check out your local disposal/ dump store. I did a job for a mate a while ago. I took apart a couple of metal, office filling cabinets and made up some brackets. I then welded the brackets to the bottom of the bench and bolted up the slides and the boxes to that. They work well and still does the job as far as i know. i plan to do a similar setup when i setup a sea container as a workshop.

If you keep an eye out, as said before you can find alot of scrap metal and bits and pieces for free that you can press up and weld to make drawers or projects out of.
