what lines from house to barn?

A crew is boring a hole for water/sewer from my barn to my house at this moment. We already have 100 amp sub panel out there from years ago trenching effort. The barn is about 75 feet from the house.

While they're at it, the are dropping a 1" line in so I can bring internet out there. We've had a heck of a time getting consistent signal out there, we think due to stone wall on house and steel siding on barn being good wifi blockers.

We already have coax run to the barn. While that is currently working nicely, it is direct buried and at more risk of being severed in the future.

So, my thoughts are to simply pull coax and a data line through the 1" pipe, and leave a pull string just in case.

Questions are:
- Any specific coax that I should ask the electrician to use?

- Same question on data line.. what type of wire is that specifically? (edit: I want to direct connect from the home internet out to the barn basically is what I'm saying.. instead of trying to transmit wirelessly)

- Any other advice?

Thanks!

Bob R.

I'd use a quad-shield RG6 coax.
Data: 75' is no problem for CAT6 (which is what I'd use). I'd pick a shielded CAT6. The only issue with "long runs" of CAT* is that they tend to be inductive for lightening strikes and can fry connectors at the end. Fiber is better, but you have to deal with converting it back at both ends.... (I have 200' runs of CAT6 in my yard)

Other advice:
* Leave a pull string in.
* Do 2 runs of CAT6, so you have a spare
* I have seen cable that includes RG6 and 2 runs of CAT5/6 on a single cable... Never used it though.

Hmm, I'll definitely ask our electrician about that combo cable. Seems like that would be more efficient in terms of space used inside the 1" conduit. Thank you for the tips!!

Put in a 2 or a 3 inch pipe instead of the 1 inch. It's just a few more bucks but gives you the option of pulling anything you may want in the future.

Agreed with this statement.

Also agree with the two Cat6 lines + 1 coax. I'd still leave a pull string.

Fiber would be nice, but for most people not necessary.

I wish I had run natural gas to mine when I had the chance. We put an older household furnace in a friend of mine's place. It works great and is cheap to run.

Funny, I always thought it was boring as hell!

:rocker:

I have Cat5e run to my garage and it's a decently long run. . . up/down/in/out and sideways and I know it slows down. However just for me to surf the 'net the slow down to 9Mbs is plenty for me.

Now, I'd run Cat6.

Do NOT run a wire for a nagcom. . . I mean intercom.

2 to 3" is not a "few bucks more" and is insane overkill for something that will carry data/cable. You don't even need something that big for 90a service

At no point in our lifetimes will a cat6 not be able to serve our home internet needs, even more so if you pull a fiber.

But hey, it isn't my money.

1" is more than enough for data.. You're fine. You can't run power through the same line anyway.

We have 1” conduit in place now. Electrician and GC felt it was plenty and I agreed. Those guys were PROS! Did an awesome job

Good move.

I would seriously consider a fiber run over cat6. If you have a nearby lightningn strike, it could take out your computer gear

I'd go fiber as well. The cost is not that much higher, and it will future proof your setup.

Buy a pre-terminated outdoor rated cable and 2 media convertors. It's very easy to setup.

Awesome, thanks guys!

The crew has the lines underground now... horizontal boring is cool as hell to watch, and it saved our property (driveway, sidewalk, and dog pen) from being dug up!

It is cool! If its only a driveway or a sidewalk or a short distance, say 20 -30 feet or so, its entirely possible to do with a water hose and some 3/4 0r 1" PVC. Makes a helluva mess....wouldnt suggest doing it in February but I used to make a nice bit of change side hustling landscape lighting and such and being able to get under a driveway without cutting the concrete or asphalt or even disturbing the gravel....without a paved surface to run under its a little harder but it can still be done....
