I remember Miami Vice being a very different show. There were no hills or mountains behind California Fan Palms and the streets were recognizable to a South Florida resident. I don't think they expected the show to be a big hit so the Ferrari Daytona Spyder was actually a fiberglass re-body of a C3 Corvette. I thought about building one but my Corvette is a coupe with T-tops and not easily re-bodied into a convertible. Fifteen Emmy Award nominations the first season and a lawsuit from Ferrari meant the Ferravette was retired and replaced with a real Testarossa early in season 3. I personally thought the Daytona replica was better looking.

Bob, I know where there is a stack of new C3 chassis (chassises?) and all the molds/plugs for the 365GTB4 cabriolet, in Broward County FL. The guy who owns the stuff bought the items from the guy who got sued by Ferrari. It's just sitting in storage, I've seen it. He was a provider of services to the show, and some acquaintances of mine worked for him.

My neighbor 2 homes away from us in Broward, was a cinematographer for the show (Miami Vice) Another guy who is a good friend of mine is a union production person, for cinematography, his gig is to ensure continuity/prevent errors when they pause filming, once they start-shooting again. He's worked on all-sorts of tv shows and movies.

My across the street Broward County neighbor owns a restaurant on Hollywood Beach (FL) which has been used by the tv and movie industry. Body Heat used it where the William Hurt character met the Kathleen Turner character, where she lured him in to kill her rich husband.

I'd expect that Beverly Hills/Bel Air, and Los Angeles and NYC would probably be the most-filmed cities.

Bob,
Years ago when my now 38 & 39 year old son & daughter were little, under 10 years old we went with friends of friends to the Colorado River camping. I'd rented a trailer and we were all camped right on the river front. This was the "Parker Strip" - known as a party place and where guys would take the hottest boats.

One couple left their son in the care of another couple while they went somewhere; probably for "afternoon delight" - and the couple didn't watch Jake, a 3+ year old closely enough. Suddenly no one could find him. He'd taken off his life vest and waded in, slipped under. When they found him a few minutes later he was gone. Rescue boat came and took him trying to revive him but he was gone. It was heartbreaking.

THE weirdest thing I think I've ever heard is that a year or two later they had another son and get this: they named him Jake too!! Macabre in my opinion. Can't imagine WHAT THE HELL they were thinking or what the grandparents must have felt.

Anyway, back to happier thought about garages. Life is terribly fragile and certainly you know that much better than nearly any of us.
Dan, I got my first lesson in life's fragility when I was six. We lived on Pople Avenue in Flushing NY. It was a quiet street with cars parked on both sides. Wanted to go out and play one day and Mom told me I couldn't. One of my playmates had chased his ball into the street and was hit by a slow moving car. Police and ambulance came but his head injury was fatal.

I'm blessed to be alive and doing my best to stay that way. This pandemic has brought out the other side -- people who would rather die than take a few simple precautions.
Bob, that's a cute puppy picture.
I have had that same Chinese vise for a couple decades. It's great, and impossible to kill. I did add a hardened washer between the screw and moving jaw. Mine wore a deep groove in the cast iron.
Kay, I think I bought that vise in Costco about that long ago. It was on a pallet near the checkout area with a $20 tag on it. The third pipe jaw was missing. I have a stack of hardened washers from a valve seal job I did a few years ago. I am absolutely sure they are right where I stashed them. Just wish I knew where that is.

Philip, my 3-car garage has two Corvettes and a Cadillac parked inside. The fourth car is parked outside. My chances of adding another car, especially a project car, to my life is up there with growing another arm -- not gonna happen.

All of my (non-GJ) friends have moved away. Some stayed in Florida but moved closer to the Deliverance neighborhoods. Others left the state for cooler weather and higher ground.

I got close to almost famous people when one of my teams did a video production for a phone messaging system at IBM. The people who do that kind of work know lots of famous people. The people who do my kind of work know the cashiers at Office Depot.

I'd reply but better if I don't.

We're all in the same boat - no one gets out of here alive - so let's make the best of our situation whatever it may be.

Dan, I understand. Speaking of staying alive, last week included four doctor visits that literally fill the days. Liane doesn't do mornings so her appointments are just before or soon after noon. Like going to church, I can't get dirty before and it isn't worth changing into grubbies after for an hour in the garage or shop.

I ordered some 5.5" carriage bolts to hang the receiver under the bench. To allow four bolts to mount the receiver, I lag bolted a 4x4 spacer block under the bench. When I learned it was going to take a while to get those carriage bolts to me, I used some Grade 0.5 lag bolts to mount it. Even with pre-drilled holes two bolts snapped off. I figured I could at least test the receiver and hang an air hose reel.
attachment.php

The reel and hoses are heavy so I lightened it up. The reel bolts to the vise hitch plate but the plate is bigger than it needs to be. Took the reel off after marking the plate.
attachment.php

Thanks to Mike (ZMotorsports) I have some Benchmark Abrasives cutoff wheels that go through steel like butter as well as flap wheels that do the same for cleaning up the cuts.
attachment.php

I can mount the hose reel either way but I didn't want to hang the weight too far from receiver with only two bolts holding it on.
attachment.php

That open space at the end of the bench needs something so I cut a piece of pegboard. I coulda, shoulda, woulda just mounted it on the outside but decided I'd be happier with it inset into the end. A few minutes with a 1/4" router bit and I thought I was home free.
attachment.php

Best laid plans and all that meant the pegboard wouldn't be mounted with existing holes. A little time with the multi-tool to mark the perimeter, another router session and some chisel action and I have flush mounted pegboard. Now I can mount non-rusting tools on the outside and other stuff that doesn't fit in my tool boxes on the inside.

Nice use of space! I love the 'place for every thing and every thing in its place' mantra! Bonus points for creatively re-purposing the use of a trailer hitch receiver!

Sorry to hear about needing so many doctor visits. Hope she will be fine.

I took a morning shower, washed my hair, shaved, etc everyday for forty years. Since I've been retired I don't because I'm going into the yard/garage and get sweaty and dirty nearly everyday.

When I DON'T do anything dirty I wait and shower, etc the next morning. I'm still not use to it. I always feel filthy even though I'm not at all.:scared::D

Will the hose reel have other stations hence the receiver tube?
I have some Benchmark flap disc so will need to try the cutoff disc.

I've been using the benchmark cut off discs for a while now. It's worth the higher price for the premium discs. They really do cut better and last longer. Plus they always send a cool sticker with every order.

Fine job sir!
Marc, thank you and thanks for stopping by.

Trapps, I'm an amateur at SPUD compared to you. There's unused space behind the tool boxes and now that I've closed off the end of the bench I won't be able to install a trolley like yours. Best part of that "trailer hitch" was its price ($18.98). It isn't meant to tow a trailer, only provide a receiver for a bike rack or other lightweight item. It attaches to a 4" or 4.5" square tube (like the rear bumper on many motor homes) with two supplied U-bolts.

attachment.php

I liked that they include the locking bolt you usually have to drill and tap yourself. Unfortunately they are out of stock at the moment but this is the item:

Harbor Freight has a bumper hitch for $19.99 but it has loops for safety chains that aren't really necessary and I'd have to go to the store or pay shipping.
Good solutions Mr. H! I admire your ambition required for this.
Y'sguy, thanks for the kind words. Keeping busy is less depressing than sitting and waiting for things to get better.

Nice job, as usual.
Thanks Kirk, nice of you to stop by and post.

Dan, in our Golden Years (late 70s) we both have doctor visits pretty regularly. Liane refuses to quit smoking so our primary care doctor wants her to have an annual CT Scan instead of just an X-Ray and that happened Tuesday. Wednesday I got my monthly Xolair shots to control my hives outbreaks. Thursday was Liane's Pain Management doctor for more information about getting off Fentanyl patches. Friday was my turn again, with a new Orthopedic Surgeon diagnosing the sharp pain that goes from hip to knee when I turn the wrong way. No hip replacement, it's just trochanteric bursitis which doesn't require surgery and some simple stretching exercises should control it. Liane's mammogram spilled over into Monday and Tuesday of this week. Monday was a double-header, picking up Liane's new glasses.

New glasses was kind of a big deal because her recent surgery to replace the artificial lens in her right eye resulted in a dramatic change. Not only can she see better without glasses but she no longer requires a prism in the glasses to eliminate double vision. Nobody expected that but it confirms the claim that the retina specialist who did the repair is the best (or one of the best) in the USA.

Like you, I did the whole shower, shave wash hair thing every morning. I did that for about 30 years for IBM and then said yes to early retirement. Did another five years in casual clothes for AOL but finally gave up when it stopped being fun. I still shave but only when someone asks "are you growing a beard?" If the clothes don't smell or would leave a mark if they touched something, they get worn another day. Same goes for me -- no skid marks, skin-colored hand and face -- it's a water-saver day.

Stewart, I do have other stations. There's a hitch on a 2x12 shelf on the side of the garage. I can connect the air hose to a quick connect on the outside wall.

attachment.php

I also have a buffer on a vise hitch mount further down the bench. It works well because I can get bulky items under the lower front quarter of the buff (safer than other quadrants).

attachment.php

The other item on a hitch vise mount is my pneumatic paint shaker. It was the reason I put the receiver outside the garage, figuring a mishap with a gallon of paint outside the garage would be easier to clean up. Here it is being tested in the new receiver.

Bob,
Good job as always!
Jon, thank you. I love how you and your wife are getting out in the Solstice. As one of the billion people who bought a GTO in 1968 I'll never understand GM's decision to kill the Pontiac Division. A Coupe or Convertible Solstice seems like the perfect weekend or even commuter car.
Nice job.
Thanks Uncle Willie. I'm happy to be playing in a dry, mud-free shed.
Excellent use of space Bob. Love it.
Mike, you have the dream space to work in and have earned every square inch. I'm not jealous (OK, maybe a little) but I do admire it.
agreed nice job of using your space.
John, as I get more organized I need to get less hoarded.

Andrew, Robert (MP&C) pointed me that way a couple of years ago. It's worth paying extra to get cutoff disks made to cut stainless steel. A whole lot more cutting and a whole lot less brown cloud.

You’ve been busy Bob. Looks like you have hitch mounts stashed all over.

Ad me to the list of being a fan of the Benchmark cut off disks, I put a 6” to the test when cutting some 1” plate. You hit the nail on the head about the brown cloud.

I’ll give you a heads up next time I’m in the area checking to make sure the local water suppliers water is wet.

I picked up the Benchmark flap discs too, but haven't purchased the cut-offs since I still have two boxes of 50 discs of another brand given to me by a friend who worked for the manufacturer (forget the brand, they're still packed away in the shed).

I like your mounting solutions Bob. I hope I remember them when I get my shop built.

Thanks Bob. I may have a bit more space now but I remember with my old shop of having to continuously think space with everything I did. I still find myself doing that or I would fill this one up. I'm all about condensing and utilizing dead space as much as possible.

Ouch. Actually it hasn't rained in about a week now. I am having to learn how to walk again.
Uncle Willie, I am really sorry about that. It appears my snarky comment was not received well by my computer.

That thing has been popping up almost every day and nothing actually happens -- it just shows 0% complete and I have to hold the power button in until it shuts off. I believe something is overheating because it recovers if I leave it powered off for a few hours. With tax time approaching this is not comforting. I owe a couple of hundred so I like to send an e-check on April 15. I pay my taxes but I don't donate my money any sooner than required.

Mrs. Heine likes to say "If your problem can be fixed with money, you don't have a real problem." I am now the proud owner of a 5-year-old refurbished Dell Optiplex 9020. It isn't a fancy machine but it does have an i7 processor, 32GB of memory, a 1TB SSD (Solid State Drive) and a legit Windows 10 installed. Delivered for just under $500. Two days of file transfers and software installs and I'm back in business. I'm impressed with the SSD -- everything happens faster.

Craig, I like these stripped down hitch mounts. I am not worried about tongue weight or towing capacity and don't really need chain loops. It's a place to temporarily mount things I don't use every day.

I recommend wearing blinders when you visit the Benchmark Abrasives site. I was not paying attention and ended up with some 4.5" flap wheels with no abrasive on them. They're just buffing wheels that save a huge amount of time when polishing stuff (like aluminum). Some 2" buffing Roloc disks also snuck into my basket.

Please let me know if our water supply is drying out (or up).

John, I understand the dilemma. I have a good size stack of disks I may use someday. At the rate they cut, one fairly small project could use them up.

There's a lot of really cool benches on GJ and their use of receiver hitches got me started. I should have made my own with square tubing but that's a lot of work.

Mike, I have seen quite a few huge shops that are so full it make me less envious. Seems like the more space some of us have, the more "someday" projects we hold onto. Yours is the perfect balance of size and function. I get a little upset when I have to walk 10 feet to get the tool I forgot I needed. If it was a hundred foot walk I'd likely shrug and turn out the lights.

tax time is just filing extensions none of the stuff is done by the various parties until the 15th and then we have to do ours, so for the last twenty years it has been extensions, I used to panic when I saw the notices from the IRS but now it is just paper.

I enjoy the IRS and Social Security scam calls, which start off by me pointing out if you were real you would freeze my account. But your a joke and I have more money than you will ever have.`So now tell me what you are going to do, click....

I miss the Blue screen of Death with the memory dump.

We just had a super spreader event here at the rink, nobody cares. I sat in my truck and read Basic Coastal Navigation.

Start my Captains class this Saturday, been doing it on line prior to classroom.

I found some manuals produced in Boca Raton for the original PC.

My wife ordered a rack from Uline and the nut plate was not welded on like the other ones so I have a welding job that will take longer to setup for than weld.

My son turned 16 today takes his learners permit next week, kill me now please.

Spring is here, planting a lot hoping to get much done before boat shows up.
Put in about 300 onions yesterday.

It would help me to organize if I could sell my racing stuff --need space.

Amazing how fast a week flies by when you are having no fun. Today was our anniversary (59th) so we vacuumed the patio, and did chores. I'm making curried shrimp for dinner.

Michael, when I was a sole proprietor the extension was a way of life. One year I filed in October. For me it wasn't very smart because I paid more than I thought I owed on April 15 (or a few days before) and collected my refund six months later. And paid the estimated tax on April, June and September 15. Now I pay a couple of hundred for last year and the estimated on April 15 exactly. An e-check lets me keep my money until the day the IRS deserves it. It's only a fraction of a penny interest but it makes me feel good.

Since I put Nomorobo on my land line I haven't received any IRS or SS scam calls. OK, a couple got through to my answering machine but I just delete them. The TV pops up the caller name when the phone rings so we answer when it's a name we recognize. Most spam calls get to ring once and then get blocked. When the TV is off, I occasionally answer a call when it's from our area code but I'm learning it's just a disguised toll-free number.

Those blue screens used to be a lot more scary. It used to mean catastrophic failure and your machine was dead. Now it just means Microsoft wants you to know they are watching.

What does the captain's license do for you?

After two months of checking almost daily, with two potential appointments a 100-mile round trip away (I opted out) I mentioned my utter failure in a text to my oldest granddaughter (I texted her to be sure she hadn't moved so I could send her a 27th birthday card). She's a teacher and already received her first shot. The text was funny because her response was "I don't recognize this phone number -- who are you?" That evening her mother (our son's wife) called to verify we hadn't gotten vaccinated. It appears the whole vaccination rollout relies more on phone apps than computers. Two days later we had three appointments at Publix. Two for the same location but two hours apart and the third at another location the next day. Both locations within 7 miles of our house. Turns out there's no way for me or Publix to cancel an appointment so you just don't show up (I assume it goes on my permanent record). Daughter-in-law told us to ask about getting the shots together and sure enough, the check-in person said no but the pharmacist said sure! April 19 we get our second shots. Too late to attend Don Long's big event.
Before Christmas my laptop was doing an update and the power blipped for some reason and erased my hard drive. It did not make me happy.
Uncle Willie, you are probably just locked out of your drive. I suspect everything is still there.
Check your battery, it should flip to that vs low power with line voltage issues.
Michael, you jogged my memory with that comment and it's the reason I've been AWOL. The two systems I was trying to install Ubuntu on are more than 10 years old and I know I have never replaced their CMOS batteries. The system that just gave me the blue screen may have the same problem because I bought it used on eBay in 2015. A little brain exercise and I remembered I quit using the oldest system when it started running CHKDSK on every third boot. I'd love to search that disk because it might have a 240-page MS Word (maybe Lotus Word Pro) document I spent a month typing and lost in a system crash. It's my transcription of a Civil War diary one of my wife's ancestors wrote.
It was due to loss of internet. When the power blipped the modem shut down.
:dunno:
That should not kill your hard drive only the file being written too or worked on.
Something else happened
:rocker:
That reminds me of the "Blue Screen of Death" and the unhappy face agrees with it!
Mark, in the bad old days that screen really meant death. Now it's Microsoft intervening to let you know your machine is very sick. Mine recovered after a re-boot but those screens started showing up every time I left the room to get a package or put something away in another room.
So is that the new version of the Blue Screen of Death?
Kirk, you are correct. I was pleasantly surprised it wasn't the end of my PC world like the old version indicated.
yep its more modern and its self aware now!
Matt, it's also a chance to do a backup and get ready for some new hardware.
great work on the trailer hitch mount and the flush pegboard at the end of your bench.

best line i heard so far today "if money can fix it you don't really have a problem" !!:bowdown::bowdown:

keep up the great work and you are getting ORGANIZED a heckuva lot quicker than I am.

cheers!!
Thanks Drives, I like the little hitches because I don't have to do anything but mount them. The first one from Harbor Freight needed to be modified. The back of the hitch needed to be opened up so the hitch could slide through and not stick out so far into the room.

Michael, I have a couple of commemorative OS/2 boxes of manuals along with a DOS 4.0 box.

OS/2 was a different kind of software project at IBM. It was a joint development effort with Microsoft but Microsoft was focused on Windows 3.0 and then 3.1. Microsoft employees got stock options as a reward for their hard work and many were millionaires as a result. A long-standing tradition at IBM was to give key employees $10,000 cash rewards for truly patent-worthy work. They did the same for OS/2 but went a step further. The 400 core employees on the project were given a week off and an all-expense paid vacation at the location of their choice (as I recall there were 10 locations). There were golf resorts, family cruises, fancy hotels (Fairmont in San Francisco and another in Arizona) and Disney World. We all got $500 for miscellaneous stuff like dog sitters. Sat through a 15-minute speech so IBM could call it a business trip and we wouldn't be taxed. Liane and I chose a whale-watching cruise on the St. Lawrence in a 50 cabin ship. At the mouth of the Saguenay River the captain told the crew to stop what they were doing and come up on deck. In the 9 years he had been captaining the cruise this was the largest number of whales he had ever seen. I lost count at 30. We finally gave up and went down to the dining room for lunch. The room had windows on both sides and a Wright Whale surfaced on our side and looked us over. They have some really huge eyeballs.

Congrats on your anniversary and my condolences to Liane. As usual Bob, some cool history there. I'm surprised it took you and Liane so long to get the shots. Robin and I got ours on Monday and our second on the 12th

No it was completely erased. My dad has a computer repair company in TN. He said it was blank. Fortunately when it told me there was a critical update it said it may cause loss of data so I backed up all my files.

Congrats on many years of entrapment.

Kirk, not sure how this happened. As many mystery and cop shows as Liane watches, you'd think she would know how to fix the problem.

We have gotten used to the isolation and I tried not to obsess over the vaccination rollout. I may be wrong but Florida seems to trivialize the whole COVID-19 situation. I'm supposed to act like it's nothing and maybe it is for the ones who never caught it. I mean, less that 10% of the 22,000,000 Floridians caught it and less than 33,000 died. Let's all go to Disney World!

Uncle Willie, that "critical update" sounds familiar. It's like the medicine commercials that include way to many "permanent" and "may lead to death" side effects. I still remember doing backups to 3.5" diskettes. My half-full 60MB hard drive took more than 20 diskettes and several hours.

I'm working on an escape plan. Sent my left arm and appendix over the wall already. The commandant is getting suspicious.
