you got rock today? town guy forgot to post the roads or something?

I scrapped my woods road off with the backhoe yesterday. made it down the hill but not enough traction to make it back up. need to get chains. Hopefully will be frozen back enough tonight to get it out of the way tomorrow before it totally turns to mush.

I thought you would get a kick out of this. I don't agree with this opinion about pewter though.

Unfortunately I think he nailed the verbalization of my emotion when I find a pewter Burb. I had a beautiful Burb and a really nice 1500 pickup and both went away because that color makes me feel like I am chewing aluminum foil. ;)

Thanks for sharing, makes my habit feel justified now!

Well the radiator tricked me, when I looked at it this morning, it appeared to be full, but it was the reflection from a anti splash plate (or something) the radiator was actually almost empty. It looks like it has a leak, but I just put some fluid in and it was fine after that. I did keep getting just about stuck, you really can’t stop or if you lose traction you need to be really quick, the vibratory roller will sink really quickly in the soft area if it stays in one place.

I finished this area just using the roller, it wasn’t as nice, but I really didn’t want to risk getting stuck as the sun is setting.

You supposed to turn off the vibration before you stop.

In Maine for the spring thaw/mud season most town roads are posted 23k lbs or less when not frozen to avoid them being destroyed by trucks. This is done by stapling large orange posters at road intersections.

The vibratory part doesn’t like to stop, neutral is in a different place each time. I jus kept it moving, but with the ground so soft it would start make a big dent and then you were screwed.

Sounds like when I redid the yard at work this winter. The roller is a pile and the vibration is messed up.

Getting ready for the trip to pick up the Jersey Burb, today is much colder than yesterday, so not a bad day for a drive.

Stop by in Rockland. My neighbor has a burb that’s been sitting but appears clean.

So far so good, got the Burb a bit cheaper, the bumpers were a bit messed up, overall pretty good.

"Destroyed" is a term that's up for debate around here.
That indicates that the roads could possibly get any worse
We do have stumps and boulders showing through, but at least the mud isn't...yet.
Sarcasm over, actually the annual reoccurring frost heave closest to the house usually has a much larger assortment of mufflers, tail pipes and plastic air dams that emerge from the snow banks than it does this year, so maybe things are getting better.

Just made it back, the maroon Burb was having an issue with the boost control, so it was much slower going back, took an extra 40 minutes, but no big deal. I will unload the Jersey Burb tomorrow, need some sleep tonight.

We stopped to eat lunch and decided to adjust the load, that was a big mistake, moved the tongue weight too far, so we had to move it back, then it was perfect after that. Shouldn’t have second guessed myself.

You might as well mark the load bed of the trailer with where to load a Burb. Save you time on the collection of the next 13 of them :D

I hope to NEVER use this trailer again. I have borrowed it multiple times and it is not a good trailer for hauling Burbs, you have to remove the ramps once you are loaded because of the design. If it was a little longer, everything would be fine. Regardless I need a smaller trailer like this, but something more suited for my needs.

Going to unload the burb, probably try and clear out the lift bay to get it inside the shop, has a couple leaks, need to assess if it is worth cleaning the interior and driving it for a few months or if I should be fixing one of the other 1/2 tons. I am already leaning towards fixing the Alaska burb as I have no real interest in keeping it long term and it should be a good one to sell when I am done using it. It is cold today, going to be colder tomorrow, so I would like to have things inside to do.

I am pretty sure that I just can't get anything accomplished if I say I would like to do it......

The contractor was up at the office, so I spent four hours with them figuring out layout and dimensions for the final walls and where built in book cases were going. Then I got to unload the Jersey Burb, as it started snowing. With the wind and the snow it was very cold, tomorrow is definitely going to be much worse...... I may just stay at the house and do office work remotely for the Day. Tuesday I have to meet with the surveyor so I can start laying out the right of way to access Dad's next project, we will call that the "land development". Still not sure what his plan is, but I am sure it won't follow any sort of protocols that the town requires and in the end everything we do will have to be redone..... I am just going with the flow for now, hopefully he will get off this kick quickly and start dealing with the island again or rebuilding some other thing. ;)

Realistically, how many of the burbs do you want to keep, and how many do you think you'll end up flipping? Can you get that done in the next month, while the roads are in a state of flux?

My plan is to have two pristine keepers, one will be setup for year round driving and two "snowplows" at a minimum, the rest will be either flipped or for parts. I think out of the 13, there is enough parts to build four. I may still need a couple fenders or some of my panels will need to be painted, but for the most part things are looking good. Right now I am actually contemplating NOT selling the F-550, the timing seems awful as it is the only truck I have that can drive over the posted roads. The issue is, if I am going to use it for the next few months, I have to do something for tools and that makes me think I should just keep it and make it work the best I can for now. I already bought all the parts, did all the work, now all that would need to be done is use it, not sure if this is some form of self sabotage or something. :(

I am sure that my mechanic won't be happy, as he wants it for his service truck, but it is what it is. I know it will always be worth a good chunk of change when I do decide to sell it. I don't know what to do, I am kind of lost on this front, I really don't have a grab and go truck right now, except the 550.

Pros:

Paid for
major repairs have been done
4x4
comfortable ride
rust free
crane with wireless remote (one person operation)
decent sized flat bed
auxiliary hydraulics
A/C system works well

Cons:

regular cab
ridiculously long wheelbase (Longer than Perk)
crane makes using a gooseneck trailer impossible
GVW is light for the wheelbase configuration (front end will be easy to overload)
no power windows or locks (I know this is a nitpick, but I am nitpicking)
Crane reach and capacity is not ideal (used to Perk, maybe not fair)
Rear "step" area is essentially dangerous and makes getting on the back of the truck hard
6.0 Engine
Will need to install toolboxes
will need to extend bed and do other reconfiguring of rear step
It is a Ford

Don’t agonize over the F550, for now.
It runs, it’s useful, and it gets the job done.
Wait until you have some of the other trucks reconfigured before you make any decisions about it.

For now, it is what it is. Spend your time agonizing over the project trucks. Don’t waste time agonizing about working vehicles.

My vote is get the Perk the way you want it ASAP, one plow burb done and dusted, one keeper burb finished, and strip/scrap the parts burbs, in that order. Get the Clark done and dusted, and one more fork lift squared away. Get that done by the 4th of July. (is that even possible?)

The accountability would be nice, except none of my things matter, I am beholden to Dad's company, so if anything goes sideways, my stuff takes a back burner. Also it isn't like any of these things make me money or anything, they all just cost time and money, in reality I would be better off selling or scrapping everything. :(

As it is right now, Perk is my major mover, so Perk needs to be functional, all that involves is the transmission swap. Then I can do the rest of the work in smaller chunks. Need to redo the entire hydraulic system, but I can add the PTO and pump in one chunk (there are places for two PTOs, so it won't interfere with the knuckle boom system), after that I can do the new hydraulic tank and all the plumbing as I remove the old system (that will need to be done all at once to keep the knuckle boom useful). Even if I couldn't use the knuckle boom for a little while it wouldn't be the end of the world, but I wouldn't want the boom to be done for a long time, especially once the weather gets nicer and the days are longer, I generally get a lot more done outside when that happens.

As for the Burbs, I couldn't do anything that fast, it would take me months to strip all of them at my pace. I need one that just runs and drives, the best candidate for that will probably be the Alaska burb because it isn't rusty, but it also isn't one that I would want to make perfect, kind of like the maroon burb, I just use it. The Maroon burb needs some work, but I haven't dared to take it off the road yet because I don't have a backup (and I don't want to daily drive Perk or the 550).

I had thought that it might be time to pull Bev out, setup a flatbed with the hitches I need and just use Bev for now.

In reality I should buy a decent bumper pull trailer that can handle a suburban as the payload, then I don't need to have a big truck or borrow anyone's trailer to move my prized possessions. ;)

No matter what I do or don't do, I still need to get an air compressor setup, my parts washer running, and get my pressure washer fixed. These things are more important right now than any burb or Perk. I also really need to get the shop at the Hill cleaned up so it isn't a pit of despair anymore. Then the Salvage Garage has to be dealt with, the place where forklifts go to die??? Without these things accomplished, I really don't have the space or tools to work on anything.

WOW, you have a long list of things that you need to do, and it keeps growing, and growing..........

Prioritize your list and see what you can get done. That is a long list though!

Are you looking for a used compressor, or a new one?

Ok, Strouty the deal is on. Can you get the part cleaner, pressure washer, and air compressor done by the end of the month? And just so you know I have skin in the game, here's my list. Drop the 20ish trees in the meadow (includes clean up), chip the brush pile, and get Smooth ('03 F-150 S'crew) moveable under its own power. By the end of the month. Game on?

It seems like this time of the year, we are all chomping at the bit to get spring/summer projects going. Been locked up all winter, or limiting our outside duties, and projects are piling up. At least that is our life in the cold.......those of you in the fair weather places may not know what I am even talking about.......

So, give me/us a reasonable goal for 1 month get done projects. We need something that is doable, without killing ourselves.
