Car battery popping sound

Have a few car batteries in the shelf and got a new charger. Did one perfect. Second one was on charger overnight as it’s a small charger. Noticed rice crispies snap crackle pop sounds from inside the sealed battery. Found some info talking about hydrogen but nothing conclusive.
Is this a sign of a short on one cell? I took it off charger and it continued the sound so I put it outside for safety. The case was not even warm.

A little bubbling on a lead acid battery during charging is "normal". "Crackling" is not "normal. I'd leave it off the charger until you can get that batter tested.

Thanks. I’ve never heard it before. Not worth burning down the garage over

IMHO, that battery is probably out gassing. I believe that the gas, assuming the battery is a lead acid one, is flammable. I would put it into a well ventilated area and avoid any sparks or other ignition sources.

Had a battery blow up on me once when I hooked up a timing light. It was both dangerous and scared the **** out of me.
