2021 Garage Sale Thread

I have upgraded the 48" two-pin bulbs to Costco LED bulbs. That worked fine. I upgraded a circular bulb in a magnifying lamp to a LED bulb I got from Home Depot. That also worked well.

Some of the LED upgrades require you to bypass the ballast and hook the 120V input directly to the bulb. Some don't, so be sure to read the directions.

My modest haul from Quakertown today. $30 went quick, after weeks of eBay-gazing. Gotta get my proper game on before April, LOL.

Amen! Can’t wait for Jakes to open! I get my second shot end of this month then it’s a two week wait. So I’ll miss opening day but I’ll be loaded up and headed there the second Sunday!

cmcc *****! By the way, if those snap ring pliers are what I think they are, I have a pair that have come in handy on huge snap rings on heavy equipment. The seller told me that he got them for use on a GM automatic transmission that had a big snap ring holding something together.

Yea, pretty sure I’ll never see a snap ring that huge. He had a table with an assortment of pliers and was selling everything for $1 each. Had to have them.

HEre's something that is very useful - an electronic tachometer! You stick a piece of reflecting tape on the rotating shaft and pull the trigger.

I got this at the Needville city wide yard sale as well. Paid $1! It's the Monarch PT99. It'll go great with my 10ee that I'm slowly restoring.

Here's the last of the tools I picked up at the tool/garage sale when I returned to pick up the old Plymouth roadrunner parts a couple weekends ago.

Everything was in one 5 gal bucket for $15.

Screw jack-Marked C 542 where the handle would attach and C 283 on the base. Possibly Model A/T??
Also unsure what the DOE 15/16"-1" is. Only marking is "Forged USA"

Picked this Chas. Parker No. 975 bad boy this evening. Couldn't believe it was still available two hours after the ad was posted. The first Parker vise I've ever seen in the wild here. Seems like a very well made and solid vise. Got it apart to unload it after having to load it as one piece. Ugh! Here's the only pic from the CL ad.

Thanks Outlaw. I'm very happy with the $100 asking price. I probably could have picked it up cheaper if not for the two other people also wanting to buy it. Now if I can only find a Parker wrench for it that would be too awesome.

Not a garage sale, but... I was visiting the father-in-law yesterday and we got to talking as we poked around in his garage. He decided he was happy with his 30yo PRC grinder and HF hand-held beltsander and gave me this.

It has been used once.

My father-in-law is one of the best men I've ever met and has, in many ways, been more of a father to me than my own. He's been a mentor, a friend, and an inspiration. More than that, he has been an example of how to live with dignity and grace even through incredibly difficult circumstances. My wife's mom abandon him and 4 kids under the age of 10, he's had 2 major heart attacks, and in 2013, he kicked cancer's ***.

He told me back when I was first getting into wrenching and eventually, gunsmithing, that there's nothing we can't do because someone somewhere has already done it, and written a book... so go find the book!

This isn't the first tool or machine he's given me, but it may be the last. He's pushing 70 and a life lived tough is starting to catch up on him.

I'm gonna miss you, Dad.

I will start with the older one. For the ones who remember an old post: I made a deal some time ago, my friend picked it up for me. We could not meet due to COVID - I made a 200 mile trip today and finally got it...

PLVMB 3/4" set (I think I am missing 3 sockets...)
Bon-E-Con 3/4" set (could not find another Bon-E-Con for sale - thus do not know how the set should have looked like. I hope somebody has an old catalog with sizes... The box does not appear to be original (as the seller suspected, but I asked for the box hoping (they were not organized in the box in the original box - just some poor quality pictures of some mix of Bon-E-Con and Taiwan.... I skipped on the latter parts. Unfortunately no breaker bar - owner told me that it was not Bon-E-Con when I got pictures of the purchase from my friend...)

I know exactly what you mean. In my case, without going into a lot of detail, it was my mom's second husband that was the best to me.

Early this month I posted (post #804) some items from the flea market, one of which I believed to be an old power saw box. I bought a group of items that came in the box, but were not associated with it originally. I asked if anyone knew the maker, but have received no answers.

Tonight, I decided to remove the white paint that someone had brushed over the rust and original paint. It seems to have been Rustoleum, or another similar heavy-body soft enamel. Under the white coat was a dark green, and under that a tan/light brown. There seemed to be a gray primer directly over the metal. There is quite a bit of rust on the box, but no deep pitting or rust out. There were some brackets spot welded inside that have been removed.

The first photo is of the box, showing the interior and the white painted front. The second photo shows the logo I exposed when I scraped off the old paint.

Too bad the logo is too far gone to save. I'll have to repaint the outside anyway because of the rust. I'll keep it for carrying small parts to projects.

Time to reveal the main reason for yesterdays tool trip

I found this box for sale in CT. The seller was selling 2 different boxes and the tool chest was a newer one which I already had. We agreed on a price. I got a phone number and was supposed to call the following day to figure out how to physically get it as it was a very long trip for me I asked a friend living not far from CT to do me a favor to pick up the box and pay for it. The sellers phone number did not work the day he wanted me to call him. I checked my e-mail and there was a message that he made a mistake and sent me a wrong number and that unfortunately he had 2 buyers who were ready to buy both boxes. I gave the seller a phone call using a new number he provided and was given 30 minutes to make sure he gets a phone call from my friend and very limited time to deliver the money and pick up the box. The stars aligned and my friend was able to make a trip on a super short notice and pick it up within an hour of my conversation with the seller and a new deadline).

...The only thing that I know is that it belonged to an old mechanic a very long time ago and no further information was available...

Yesterday I made a trip to pay my dues to my friend and pick it up...

...To put it in perspective: my first record on my tool notebook (where I try to write down my purchases, advices from GJ, ets) mentions that eventual goal of my tool collection is obtaining K60/K200 combo. That was January 2018...

Without further delay:

Yes, that was an unpleasant surprise when I initially could not reach the guy, then got a new phone and then got an ultimatum. I am really glad it worked out!

I met a lot of nice people buying the tools, but I also met a lot of strange people including scammers. At this point I do not assume that the tools is bought till it is physically in my car or in my house

Just picked this guy up at a sale this past weekend! An old Estwing Ball Peen! In a bit of rough shape, but perfect for a restoration which is the kind of Estwing tools I usually look for! I will strip the handle off, clean the hammer up and regrip it with new leather! And for only $10, for me, that is a great deal!
