I'm assuming it's a decent press simply by the fact it's made in Japan....safe assumption? Was Jet a known, quality brand?

Not worth $300 but I'll bet he gets at least $200 for it. Drill Press prices have gone insane much the same as real estate, vise and anvil prices.

JET is a good, well-known manufacturer. But, there are so many other presses out there that with a little bit of looking you can find much better equipment at better prices. But, others are also looking so you need to be fast with the cash for a good one. That said, if you need one NOW, you could do worse.

$300 - too much! I recently acquired a Japanese built 13R Jet by trading even from a 10 inch chinacom. It had a couple issues which I fixed, so a good deal for me. Positives are that it seems well built, is pretty heavy, weighing in at 160 lbs and I have no quality complaints. Mine was modified with an extra speed pulley, but a big negative with the one shown is that bottom speed is 500 rpm, too fast if you do much work with steel. I would look for something with more speeds and lower rpm - around 200 rpm.

Been searching for months, and prices are prohibitive for myself at least. I only need a press for punching in ball bearings on riding mower wheels and chain cases (I rebuild old Snapper riders as a hobby). It's hard to justify buying at these prices when it's something I will use only occasionally. Hell, I don't even need a working motor on it, just something hefty enough to handle the downward force.

Then skip this. What you need is a "Arbor Press' and not a Drill press.

In regards to older Japanese. They look like Taiwanese drill presses but are actually better quality. I have one that's a little newer and fancier but its the best and most accurate drill press I've ever come across and I've rebuilt a lot of DP's. It was measuring .0006" TIR runout with new chuck and motor was silent using the same high grade bearings used in motors for surface grinders. The columns are way bigger dia. and much more stout than a typical DP and have a really nice table lifts.

Having said that, I'm not familiar with this particular Jet DP and not sure of quality and very limited rpm speeds but $300 is way too much for the simple fact that everyone thinks these are cheap Harbor Freight type DP's. But 500 rpm is too fast.

DP's are going for crazy high prices now. But you need an arbor press

I'll be using a tool specially designed for bearings and it requires a drill chuck.

You just use an arbor press with a chuck added. Easy to do but all depends how much headroom you need as it does take up some of the space.

That would be awesome, but again, the cost. These don't appear to be cheap.

See, this looks workable, is local, but guy wants $400!

Says it has a motor, but is hand-cranking as well. Would be perfect for my purposes I would think.

$400? I didn't realize they'd legalized marijuana out there. Suggest that he contact the Smithsonian and donate it. Otherwise, I might go $75, if I were feeling generous.

I know, right? This is the sort of thing I see all the time though.

He's had it listed for 17 weeks. You'd think he could take a hint!

Also, how big of things are you pressing into? How much height do you need for room in the press? Is it a 1" tall items needing a 1/2" thick bearing pressed in or ?

Will require tons of room as I press them right into the front wheels/tires. Less clearance required for the chaincase or fenders, but still a good size table to work with.

Kansas is still pretty vague considering it's only a mere 400 miles by 200 miles of area with 600+ cities with many other big cities on the other side of borders.

Go look on your FB Marketplace, there's plenty of other DP's selling for less.

Good luck

If they're selling for less, then they are almost always way too small.

I'll find something eventually.

Prices are regional, but I'd estimate fair market value at $150 + or -. That's a very stout machine. (looks like Delta)

I just sold my Delta last month. The one in your photo looks like it had a much heavier table though.

The table lock handle is shop made, the column has been cut down and something looks wrong with the head where the motor mount slides in. All red flags that there could be bigger issues with this dp.

Noted. I would expect any 60+ year old DP could have a few modifications or problems. Interesting that this may have started out as floor standing and was later cut down.

Replaced levers usually indicate it was dumped over at some point... in regular use the levers would never break.

[emoji23] Not in my area.
Floor drill presses are $100.00 and up.
Typical home owners buy them and there they sit.
I'd look for a slow speed drill press for steel drilling. The two belt setups usually have a greater variety lower and higher speeds.
