Some days I really wish I would buy a place without a bunch of grass and stuff to maintain...maybe next time lol

You can switch places with me if you like. I have basically no yard and 90% creeping charlie

That short-lived warm weather was amazing.

Nice score on the vac, auto-start will be nice.

Enjoy those naps while you can!

I so despise creepy charlie...been fighting it for 5 years. How do you get the snow blower down? besides physically?

What a cutie!

Don't I know the truth of that! I was on baby duty yesterday while the wife worked in the yard.

Thanks! For us it's become a quick discussion on Thursday night of what our "goals" for the weekend are for the family unit and who has point on baby duty at the various points based on what we're trying to get done! Wife mocked me as it was "too corporate" when we started it....keep in mind we both worked for the same company at the time so living by outlook calendar reminders was what worked there and it worked at home too...so it's been simplified but still works for us

You can switch places with me if you like. I have basically no yard and 90% creeping charlie

I finally bested the creeping charlie at our last place...I moved! Agree on the hating the stuff...and yeah...the yard is a blessing and a curse. A key feature of this place was the bigger yard...and I don't mind yard work but not my top priority...but too cheap to pay the neighbor kid $50/wk to mow it when I already own the equipment...so I keep at it!

And about that weather....what Northwest dwellers sent their weather to the midwest this week? We liked last week's 70 and 80 degrees....got 60's, cloudy and damp all this week here...but soon will be complaining about the heat though so we'll take this while we got it

And loved the auto start over the weekend on the vac...so much I ordered a 2nd unit....looks like your Festool Vac is still working great for you...any regrets on that one? Something similar is still towards the top of my tool want list

Offer a neighbor a beer or 2....then grunt! It's about 120 lbs so with 2 people isn't bad and it's easy to get a neighbor to help out for something like that. If it ends up changing and I need a ramp I'll put one together but then I have to story it and that's a hassle so for the 2x a year it needs to go up/down right now it's grunting and a couple bucks for one of the neighbors preferred beer...which so far the preference is "cold" so it's easy to accommodate!

I think that’s the only way to win the creeping charlie war. I love the look of a well manicured yard, but I shake my head at how much time is spent on it.

I love the look of a well manicured yard, but I shake my head at how much time is spent on it.

I'm really learning how true this is

This is my 3rd house but the first one I'm feeling the pressure of the yard.
When you live in the country(1st house) it doesn't matter how the yard looks...if it gets too shaggy the neighbors think you're either going to pasture it or maybe bale it

The Chicago place had a tiny front yard but a very long(250' long) back yard with full privacy fence...so I kept it mowed and reasonable length but 0 external pressure as it already looked better than the lot that backed up to me and several of the adjacent ones

This one...oh brother. Corner lot, in one of the primary entrances to the development with a sprinkler system. Got the new fence in last year so the back yard is at least private now....but all of the neighbors are either "yard guys" themselves or shelling out the bucks for someone else to maintain. It was aggravated too by the sprinklers being on a reduced schedule last May/June which was one of the hottest and driest time periods...so the grass in areas took a beating. We didn't have much of a choice as it was the only house we saw last May in the dry spell of listings thanks to Covid that met our needs....but the wife and I did talk about the likely "suburbia peer pressure" we'd probably feel and succumb to and sure enough a year later I'm there! But I just have to take a moment to remember about complaining about a yard that's too big...goes over about like the camel in the desert complaining about the taste of the water

Now back on topic as this is GJ and not Yard Journal....guessing something like that exists...a rabbit hole I do not need to go down!

Drew up a couple more vac hose adapters, couplers...printed the first one and got this:

View media item 111866
Hum....that's no good, something failed...ok I'll run it again...got the same thing again. Something appears to have happened in the "slicer" program that translates the CAD model to machine code for the printer to print and it happened just after it got to the "cut in" embossing of the hose diameter(2.25") I put in the side....so tomorrow I need to save that file again, reslice it and see what happens....first time I've had this particular issue but it's not an unknown in the hobby

Did get the first "test" drawer for the built in put together....missing the bottom but the rest was successful:
View media item 111867
Learned a lot on both the tracksaw and dovetail side....have a few things to figure out for both of those before I try and move into "production" mode on each of those operations but I'm much more confident in that I can get farther into this project before I'm up the proverbial creek without a paddle!

Next up there is to figure out the dado for the bottom to go into and the casework details which will be slightly complicated as it's a 28" wide case that goes thru a 24" wide door so has to be final assembled in the space

And speaking of dado for the bottom....I mentioned a while ago about some Incra goodies....well I'm attempting to deliver on that, it's a roundabout way to get there and not what I had planned....but now have this in the garage:

View media item 111865
Incra setup with the box jig setup, the big Porter Cable router in a Woodpeckers Precision Lift and a Woodpeckers table. I'm intending to add a router table "station" onto the end of the hardware table where the MFT 3 sits folded up and dual purpose that table as both the "home" of the MFT and the router table as I just don't feel like I have room for a dedicated router table right now....but we'll see. For now with it being warm enough the wife is in no danger of scraping ice off the car in the morning and a project for her benefit in process I'm not getting death glares for her ride parking in the driveway overnight...see how long that lasts :)

And last but not least, in absolutely unrelated fashion other than this is GJ and some members(but not often me) park cars in their garage...saw this during the lunch time grocery pickup(anyone else order groceries online now? We started in 2018 and love it!) and had to take a picture. Yes it's probably not for everyone, but it was different and personalized enough that I think I like it better than so many other of the cookie cutter looking pavement princesses I see in my area:

....yeah, I'm one of those guys. I used one of the big name guys for awhile with half decent results. I got tired of their half assed results and took up the responsibility again. Got tired of that after 2 seasons and a yard that started to look bad again. Found a smaller operations with sterling reputation. Best yard in the neighborhood. I still get out and mow with my dad's 40 year old 2-cycle self (me) propelled Lawn Boy mower, but damn it's a nice yard....

That's interesting....I hadn't thought of looking around for just fertilizer/treatment type services. All the outfits I've seen and the ones the neighbors use are an "all in one" type service where it's fertilizer, mowing etc all together....gonna have to look closer for just some fertilizer/treatment options that includes soil testing while I keep the mowing responsibilities....another thing for my "To Do" list on the phone! Thanks for stopping in Mark!

Yeah, my service does all the fertilizing, aeration and seeding (2x a year), weed control and pest control. I do the mowing and watering....

And loved the auto start over the weekend on the vac...so much I ordered a 2nd unit....looks like your Festool Vac is still working great for you...any regrets on that one? Something similar is still towards the top of my tool want list

No regrets, it's solid. Does everything it's supposed to do. I got it as a combined birthday present plus chipped in myself. If I had to buy it completely outright, I think I'd be hard questioning if I needed all the features, because at the end of the day a standard shop vac and the right hose will do just as good of a job collecting dust. But if all the little perks like variable suction, quietness, compact thoughtful design, HEPA, great filter system (doesn't constantly clog), and built-in autostart are important to you, it delivers.

The only quirk I can think of is the variable suction can only be adjusted while the vacuum is running. So if it was previously set to level 5, and I want to change it to level 1, but I've already plugged in my sander and set it to "auto on", I have to briefly run the tool to trigger the vacuum and then adjust suction. I wish you could adjust it while the motor isn't running. But that's a small thing.

That's some pretty sweet router kit you got there! Is that a new acquisition or did you have it before?

My country place was that way....2/3rds of the "front yard" was a pasture before I ripped out the fence posts and just started mowing it so it "looked" like a yard even if it really never got seeded and treated like one. 2 weeks or so without rain and the grass(except over the septic!) would start to look ugly...anther week or two and the weeds would start to match so it really looked a uniform brown....but it was uniform-ish height so didn't bother me a bit and meant less time on the mower! Though as it was Iowa we didn't have those stretches too long so I ended up with 2.5 hrs a week on the mower

Thanks...super helpful! Going to see how these auto starts and Dust Deputy bucket setup's work before I take that plunge....

So that's an interesting story....

Literally 2 wks before we moved out of Chicago last summer, my Craigslist search for "Incra" dinged with a new hit and someone maybe 2 miles away had advertised a NIB Incra 32" fence set for a tablesaw....only it was a package deal with the saw. I reached out and let him know if he would separate them I'd be interested in the fence, he found a buyer for the saw who didn't want the fence so we met up.

I didn't do my due diligence(but still paid a very very low price anyway) and bought the kit and found out a couple months ago when I finally opened it up that the "main" box of the 3 was missing, so all I had was the front and back mounting rails...not the beefy center section that attaches to the fence has has the measuring scale etc...so what I had was basically useless for my current plans....drat!

The plan was to use it in conjuction with the MFT...make a bolt on router table "box" that would go on the MFT mobile table setup I made and have the top surfaces aligned, then use the Incra gauge in conjuction with a likely homebrewed version of this:

View media item 112038
https://precisiondogs.us/collections/frontpage/products/precision-plate

So that I can quickly drop it on the MFT table to use for the router, and when I'm not using it for that it pops right off as I don't feel like I have the space right now for a dedicated router table that big

This package came up a week or two ago locally, more then I needed as I didn't want/need the table and really just wanted the Incra fence and the router/lift combo but he wasn't interested in splitting apart and I couldn't blame him so we made a deal in the Cabela's parking lot...I pulled away and he went in the store to hopefully buy something fun and totally impractical :rocker:

For now I'm likely going to try and use the router table as is since my wife's requirement to park in the garage at night has been temporarily relaxed due to spring so I'm able to "sprawl" into her stall. Hopefully after I get these built in dresser units done I can get the router table "box" built and mounted to the side of the other cabinet and then sell that current table...will see what else comes up between now and then

Also trying to make a few "upgrades" to some things I found "less than ideal" during my test run on that first dresser drawer:

Wasn't a big fan of how "sloppy" the 3D printed parallel guides that Nick shared the link from Thingiverse on...I shouldn't complain as it cost me nothing but the filament on the printer to try and I think the concept was good...just not as tight of fit as I wanted so I remodeled them and after a couple iterations got them fitting much tighter:

View media item 112040
The brass inserts are threaded inserts, haven't sunk them in yet but will be for a set of narrow rip guides....again stealing the concept from Precision Dogs:

https://precisiondogs.us/collections/frontpage/products/precision-parallel-guides

If anyone is interested in the files or printed sets of them feel free to send me a PM...still working out the details on the narrow rip guides

Also made some progress on dust collection at my chop saw...have to wait for pictures of the saw but your basic shop vac with a Oneida Dust Deputy then going to (2) collection ports at the saw meant I needed a Y-coupling to go from the 2-1/4" hose out of the dust deputy to the smaller hoses hitting the saw...

View media item 112041
Supposed to be off the printer tonight around 10pm....see if I got the hose diameter/tapers right the first time or not :dunno:

Managed to also get taxes and Mother's Day done this weekend too...as much as I don't like damp and cold weekends it does help get the inside stuff done!

Thanks for swinging by and hope everyone had a great weekend!

Hey Logan,
I’ve got the incra table saw fence and have had it for about 6 months. It’s exceedingly precise, but I’ve found that the the precision isn’t worth the amount of real estate that the system takes up. Given the choice, I’d happily take a bessemeyer or similar. Or, redesign.

I’ve got a ton of feedback to offer and I’m pretty handy in CAD if you want to collaborate on building something better.

Cool! You could also use the Incra fence as a rip stop for the track saw, too, on the MFT. Precisely repeatable stops, or incremental cuts for something like dados?

Interesting your 3D printed parallel guides were sloppy. Mine aren't perfect, but also not so bad I felt like it was affecting results. But mine were done on a crappy 3D printer, though, so maybe they weren't as precise of a fit as yours. I'm sure you've tuned them up nice. They aren't the prettiest, but a huge cost savings over some of the commercial solutions out there!

Appreciate the feedback...and may have to take you up on that or at least share our ideas and progress back and forth! Never used one on a tablesaw before, my Unisaw had the Jet fence and it worked great and was easy to use and can already see how this would definitely be slower then the traditional Jet/Bessy style fence...guess will have to see how I feel about it on this router table over the next several months.

Cool! You could also use the Incra fence as a rip stop for the track saw, too, on the MFT. Precisely repeatable stops, or incremental cuts for something like dados?

Bingo....though I am a mere padawan compared to you and others learning how to use this MFT style worktable for increased efficiency but the thought of being able to use the Incra with the tracksaw or other items was definitely in my mind.

Interesting your 3D printed parallel guides were sloppy. Mine aren't perfect, but also not so bad I felt like it was affecting results. I doubt mine were sloppy enough they would've impacted the results...when you snugged up the bolt they tightened up well....I was mostly being finicky about it and using that progress to feel better about my procrastination starting the larger project....:shocking:

And speaking of procrastination...snuck to the garage at the end of the day as wanted some additional clamping solutions on my main assy table and I've grown fond of using the T track type clamps to hold things vertical on the MFT table.....so my first official use of the router table commences!

Quick setup with the dovetail bit after unzipping the first side of the "apron" on my assy table and success!

View media item 112104
Was originally going to insert T track until I saw on "The Google" that a standard dovetail bit set correctly will do the same thing....wait so I can do what I want and not buy something new :headscrat That's not right.....

View media item 112105
Nope...not right! I apparently was being too much of an ape with my feed rate and snapped the 8mm shank(thanks German's) bit....grrr. Nobody to blame but myself...but still grrrr.....

Oh well....Amazon will have another one here for me on Wednesday to finish that project up.

Also tried Rev 1 of this out....reworked the hose ports for the 2 smaller hoses and Rev 2 is printing right now so hopefully can finish that up tomorrow.

That’s a great idea on using a dovetail slot! I’m stealing that.

Steal away!

This is the cross section view with the Bessey clamp, I've got the bit set to shy under 1/2" deep, could shallow it up a bit but it isn't as easy to slide in/out then so this gives it a bit more "play" which I preferred in totally unscientific trials

View media item 112115
Got the urge to do something to make progress on the impromptu clamping project...so did what I probably should've started with and chucked up a 3/8" spiral bit and hogged the center out of the dovetail cuts so when the new bit arrives the chip load will be less...hopefully I don't screw up again on it this time!

View media item 112117

And UPS was kind today as picked up this SK screwdriver set from @Duker's Sat AM Amazon deals posts....totally wasn't expecting the super nice foam cutout case. Had intended to put these at the 3d printing workstation so going to print some corner brackets to hold the foam up onto the Wall Control pegboard

Nice, I like the dovetail slot. I love those Bessey / Festool quick clamps to death, I use them non-stop. I recently got a pair of the Microjig dovetail clamps, but the thought hadn't crossed my mind that the others could fit, though. If you do any edge-banding on your wardrobe project the vertical clamping will be awesome.

Routing the dovetail is definitely messy, hollowing it out with a straight bit seems smart. A great option for jigs and such, T-Track is too costly!

Those screwdrivers look really nice.

I found this pic, this is gonna be you:

So I try and remember the "Golden Rule" for keeping a happy household....

No not the one about who has the gold, the one that's even more important for those of us that are married....

"Happy Wife, Happy Life" or the less gender specific "Happy Spouse, Happy House"

And with it being anniversary weekend, and her being preggo...I decided it would be a wise time to try and do some of those other things that would make her happy vs what I wanted...so not a ton of time this past week but a few things got knocked off the to do list that made her happy:

Wife won this new faucet as swag from work(Interior Designer)....has the "touch" technology so can turn the water on/off with a tap of your hand to the faucet...after getting used to it we actually really like that feature.
View media item 112242
And the old faucet gets moved to the laundry room to upgrade that sink...which isn't done yet but on this week's "to do"

Also got asked a couple months ago to do the bathroom floor at my father in law's hall bath with new click type laminate from a big box....figured a rainy dreary Sunday was a good time to do that one:

Hello 80's ish linoleum
View media item 112243
And good bye 80's and hello fake wood look...but it's updated and makes them happy plus matches the other bath so knock that off the list as well!

Haven't played much with the new site but so far I like it...so let's see what's happened around here:

Little CAD break over lunchtime to play with some toolbox organizers got these tool holders:

full

full

As the little one is getting bigger and with #2 on they way the hunt on the used marketplace was for a playset for the yard...been recently disappointed on a couple sets for various reasons but found this set in pretty good shape for what I thought was a very reasonable price:

full

Unloaded....(1) of the main posts will likely get replaced, along with some of the 5/4 boards around the bottom, otherwise needs a good powerwashing and staining as they almost always do, also have to buy a new tarp or build a wood roof as the original tarp got damaged last year in a storm...oh well. The joys of buying used!

full

Got the spot for it laid out in CAD then flagged the perimeter. Tested to see how much work it was to scrape the sod up with shovel...yeah that's not happening for 824 sq ft so when nap time is over it may be time to go rent a sod cutter. Was debating on wood mulch vs rubber...didn't like the price delta(rubber around 3 or 4x more than wood playground mulch) but then saw the lead time was likely 6-12 weeks for rubber so decision was made

Man the pic uploads on the new site are worth the change alone. Love the tool holders. And I am going down memory lane with the playscape. Already bought one of those and sold it after the boys out grew it. Was very similar to yours but only had one slide. I also had to put a new tarp on but I went cheap and used one from harbor freight as a new one was a couple of hundred dollars.

Thanks for dropping in Bret! I almost went to West Des Moines to get one! This one was considerably closer thankfully! Will decide on tarp or roof after it's up...I'm probably going to start with tarp and see how that goes...and definitely not paying Rainbow prices for it!

And in a sure sign I'm "maturing" the excitement here on Sat night after kid went to bed was to go to Home Depot and rent a sod cutter and trailer. Of course couldn't let it just sit there overnight without trying it...this thing is sweet! 20210522_211054.jpg

Alright with an unscheduled afternoon in a waiting room while the wife waits on a doc for what's hopefully an overly cautious visit...quick update to keep mind off things coming up!

The main playset pad got cut and all rolled up, but hadn't spent anytime figuring out what I was gonna do with the sod....hmmm....

FB Marketplace here we go! Had good success in Chicago with giving away or selling super cheap things that I would otherwise have to pay to throw awag(and invest significant time and labor in) so tried that route again. Just over an hour after posting had a couple backing their trailer in to load it all up!

20210523_122259.jpg

While discussing their project for it, we talked over their needs and what was loaded up wasn't enough to finish the project so with the equipment already on site...let's keep going

20210523_130527.jpg

That no man's strip was a necessity of utilities being buried there and not able to get the posts in and I dislike having to maintain it. Was willing to keep mowing it for awhile based on how much effort it was to get rid if the sod...but since I had someone ready and willing to take it...went ahead and did it all as well

20210523_135235.jpg

That was the end of my energy and needed grass removal so back to return the stuff and pick up the weed control fabric I went

Got back and pulled out the generic 120v buzz box and tried to glue some busted stuff back on the father in laws mowing trailer. The welds are abysmal so move on if you're looking for weld **** as none to see here...but it's better then it was and keeps me in good-ish graces

Looks like a lot of work, but it should be worth it to *hopefully* have the kids entertain themselves in the back yard in the future.

So was killing time this AM and realized I missed the picture of the trailer repairs....so here for viewing pleasure

So back to yesterday...turns out the wife's water broke 1 day short of 30 weeks...which with 40 weeks being "full term" it's earlier than was planned....

So new plan is she's admitted to the hospital and not leaving till baby comes which has a target date between Wed night and 4 weeks from today....so big window but just taking it day by day! We're trying to figure out what our new "normal" is and how I work out the needs here in the hospital with the kiddo at home...but the staff here is great, the room is pretty nice and we're just taking it day by day. At this point both Mom and baby doing well, are stable and the staff isn't concerned so goal right now is to keep her "preggo" for up to 4 more weeks or so!

But looking less and less likely that the closet project, the playset and the big kid bed for older sister get done before baby brother arrives...but as he'll be likely in the NICU for a between 4 and 8 weeks....maybe I just change that definition from "born" to "home" and I could still have a chance!

Oof. I speak from experience when I say it's good to have a support network when pregnancy or birth have complications. Thankfully my parents and extended family are mostly local.

My sister set up a meal train for us while my wife was convalescing. www.mealtrain.com It was invaluable not to have to worry about dinner for more than a month, and helped to have a place to point people who wanted to help.

Good luck!

Best wishes to you and your family Logan. Sometimes life likes to throw surprises. I think it's natural to want to tick off projects before the baby comes, but take care of your wife and kiddo! The closet will still be here when it's all said and done, and so will we. I'm like 99% sure I won't be finishing the projects I set out to do, either... 😄

Take care, man!

Thanks all for the support! Been a crazy last 72 hours but settling in now and everyone is healthy, safe and the baby is still unborn. There is a small leak in the amniotic sac, not the big "gush" of a typical water break, but the presence of the leak means she's been admitted to the hospital to help stay monitored, minimize activity and keep her close by in case something happens. New plan is try to stay pregnant till 34 weeks and then will deliver and spend some time in the NICU prior to coming home. Not the plan we had to begin with...but the staff has been excellent and it's now the right plan for us so we'll work with it

In good news....neighborhood yard sales this week and our next door neighbor had a nice set of twin beds that I now own so don't have to worry about building the big kid bed for soon to be big sister anymore!

So few things got done between hospital trips:

16 yds of playground mulch was delivered to the playset pad...should have made that double gate a 10' instead of 8' for a bit more gracious entrance

After some work it looked like this:

Ran out of barrier cloth about 6' short...grrr. Still need to dig the sod out between the posts so the mulch can go up against the fence

Got the playset washed off and ready for stain20210530_134143.jpg

Attacked some of the grass left between the posts

And got most of the set moved back to the backyard

Used the new dovetail groove for my first project fixing one set of the headboards on the twin bunk bed set we picked up from the neighbors... super excited at how this worked!

Little more work getting mulch spread around with help from Dad on Monday... was a sleepless night Sunday night though so didn't have energy to try and put the playset together.

And this would be why it was sleepless:

Little one #2 decided that after a week of his "mobile house" being fairly stationary in the hospital that he wanted out...so he flipped around to head up(breach position) and talked Momma's body into active labor and as a result we got wheeled into the OR just after midnight on Monday AM and a pretty healthy not yet 31 wk baby was delivered about 20 minutes later! Momma and baby are both doing well, we have somewhere between 5 and 9 wks in the NICU ahead of us but are extremely fortunate in that he's large for his age(born at 4 lbs 1.3 oz) and has no significant medical complications at this time so just time to be patient and learn from the amazing care team supporting us!

Still no name...working on that this week...we thought we had more time lol!

Congratulations!!! Though not what you had planned they always seem to do their own thing when they are ready.
