If the store pulls the item just because it is out of season or not selling, I find it hard to believe the manufacturer would give them a refund for destroying the product.

You can imagine what you like, I'm just sharing the facts of how it works.

Pretty much everything sold to a major retailer is either sold on consignment or with a buy-back guarantee. No one would buy from them otherwise, it's a requirement to sell to major stores. If it doesn't sell, for whatever reason, they either return it at manufacturer's expense for a refund, or in most cases, manufacturer directs them to dispose of it and refunds the cost. The reason it did not sell is irrelevant.

When you consider the manufacturer's COGS is in the range of 10% of retail, it just doesn't make sense to return product if it will cost more than manufactured cost.

Yeah my brother was blown away that they would throw them away but I know a few insurance agents and they say when a claim is made for theft they get the entire RETAIL sales price refunded back to them. I doubt the home depot insurance would go up since they probably have a certain % expectation for damaged destroyed items they claim and it's probably around the same amount each year.

Silly question...

They have four boxes of new mowers with no batteries. They're claiming theft and dumping them, pocketing the insurance or manufacturer money.

What happens to them (physically) at that point? Employees take them home and sell on CL?

Seems like putting them up for sale with a replacement battery would make more sense for the manufacturer.

I'm puzzled, it seems like people who know nothing about the business find it difficult to accept that the store loses money if they sell the item that they don't lose if they don't sell it.

Perhaps the point people don't know or understand is that the store receives full credit from the manufacturer for the destroyed merchandise, but must provide proof of the destruction or discard to get the credit. For example, if the store paid $50 for an item that retails for $150, they are better off to destroy it and get the $50 credit than to sell it to someone for $45.

The reason the manufacturers do this is to save money, it costs more to ship the items back than the products are worth.

You explained this in such a way that it’s clear and easy to understand.... to a reasonable person. However, others still don’t get it, further supporting your first sentence above.

I’m not in the retail business, but with your explanation, it’s pretty easy to understand this situation. Makes perfect sense to me. There’s a similar issue in my respective industry, and understandably, it’s hard for people that don’t work in, to understand also. Because, they’re just not familiar with the dynamics of the industry. I try to explain to them, but they just refuse to believe that’s how it is, because they can’t understand it.

Sometimes, you just have to trust the experts, and some hard-heads don’t want to do that.

After working retail (a lot in merchandising and displays), I get the throwing out due to logistics of cost sending back/storage/etc. But it's from a purely capitalistic point of view, understandably.

From someone not aware / regular customer, one would think donating would make more sense that destroying perfectly good product. Easiest products to find marked cheap are chemicals because they can't destroy them.

I get both sides, but if I wanted to support cleaner world, I'd find a way to not scrap good merchandise. There is also nothing stopping the store & vendor from having a different arrangement for that products end life, so that product isn't overly transported, but not destroyed.

Most likely they are destroyed and/or discarded. Stores have giant "shredders" to destroy merchandise.

Employees cannot legally take them home, that would be theft, since the manufacturer owns the item after paying the store for it.

In some cases, items are palletized and sold in bulk to liquidators and other resellers. There are some online auctions where you can buy this type of merchandise, though it tends to be mostly customer returns.

Thanks. The fact that they need a giant shredder at each store is frightening...

The HDs that I worked at had a trash compactor. We got direction from the MFG to destroy or pallet and send to one of the distribution hubs.

One offs like the mowers would most likely be destroyed. No, they will most likely NOT be stolen by employees, assuming the higher ranks are not corrupt. An assistant store manager or a store manager had to witness the items being thrown down the trash compactor and had to sign off on it.

If something was being pulled from the shelves because it was an old model or wasn't selling, then it most likely would get put on a pallet and sent back to a distribution hub. From there it would be auctioned off. I'm not sure who would be able to go to those auctions but the pallets were wrapped in black opaque wrap so you could not see what was on there.

I worked at a Walmart 30+ years ago. Most of the items were sent back to their processing place. They had a compactor that had to be locked all the time except when filling. They were afraid of theft. If you climbed into a compactor (terribly dumb idea) to steal something, you wouldn't be able to get it outside anyways and you would have to follow the truck to a land fill to get something after it was hauled away. Not an easy way to make a buck.

Thanks. How accurate does BS tend to be with penny items?

Mike

Since Brickseek pulls their info from the retailer, the BS inventory numbers should be as accurate as Home Depot's system. If the store staff zeroes out the quantity for a discontinued item, then I suppose BS will update to Out of Stock for that store location.
Though, I wonder why BS can access the quantity of a clearance item at an HD location, but not the price. :headscrat

Also, HD seems to be a lot quicker than Lowe's at pulling clearance availability from online. Even when the initial clearance discount is pretty lousy, the HD website and app will suddenly show the item unavailable at every location.

Thanks. I've definitely noticed a difference between availability on the Lowe's site vs BS. I've found some good stuff that way already this year.

Had the opposite experience yesterday. A Makita impact kit went on clearance, was available online, later when I got home and checked again HD website showed out of stock ,Brickseek showed 2 in stock at my local HD , after dinner drove over and not an impact to be found. Was trying to track one down for a co-worker , but he done missed the boat, or atleast has to wait for it to come into port again.

For what it’s worth. If there is any Ego floating around your HDs still they did finally discount. Got this string trimmer and batter for $51 out the door.

More of a stumble. Because EGO is at Lowe’s now Home Depot has removed it from their system so it’s not on brickseek, not on the PCA and didn’t follow the normal clearance schedule.

Good score, but I think total fluke. No longer available on the website, no results in BS, no longer sold in stores. Bummer.

Thanks for the heads up! Snagged 3 but one was open box. I went right to the store when I saw your post. Have you tried them out yet? I am seeing a lot of mixed reviews after buying them. Now I buy first and decide later since these deals don’t last long.

Definitely not a fluke. Here is the BS link if you want to track one down: https://brickseek.com/home-depot-inventory-checker/?sku=312099967

I noticed the computers facing the customers are gone again at the local store.

Anyone else see the same in their area?

If they are going to take them away, at least train the associates on them!

Many have been removed. After asking as cashier last night to check a sku to see if they really had 1, she said she could NOT from her computer (she had 3 around her at the pro desk). So I went a little farther down, usde the computer that as still sort of at her area, and looked up myself. She came running down yelling at me for using, and I pointed that is says "PUBLIC" next to several of the icons. She apparently didnt speak common sense, and shoed me away after I essentially showed her how she wasn't doing her job.

My store removed two computers by the window/door department months ago. It made it so easy to browse clearance. Anyhow, I used the one by lawn and garden and a manager said go ahead. Prior to that, I tried using the one in kitchen department and almost got tackled.

It stinks because I’m literally just trying to buy their items for them 🤣.

Anybody else notice the 40v 18” mower changed from the DEEP clearance price of $62.25 back to $199?! I searched all over for one and was too late to the deep clearance price.

More deals guys! It’s that time of the year for HD to clear product.

The Fiskars items I generally find to be very store specific.

Marlborough, MA had a huge pile of cabinets at half price last night. Don't know if it was a canceled order or just a design gone out of style.

Also found a deeply discounted Ridgid cordless router, tool only, over 60% off.

And a Milwaukee hole saw set, only 13% off.

Nice find on the router!! I’ll see if I can find one but then will need batteries 🤔.

I’m dying to get my hands on the hole saw set but the price is moving soooo slooww.
