Found these in my father's tool box. Probably haven't seen daylight in 35 years.

HAHA! Nice wrenches. I don't collect much past WWII, but I am pretty sure the engineer's wrench is from the 50's. Those electrical wrenches are older. The Chro-Molys are from the late 1930's to 1941, and the Chrome-Alloy is pre-war/early war but no later than 1943, when the same wrench would just be marked "ALLOY." I have a few sets.

Thanks for the reply. They might have come from the Curtis airplane factory in Buffalo. My father's 2 brother's were mechanical engineers there during ww2.

Very likely then. Prewar tools that were in the inventory prior to alloy restrictions show up in postwar surplus all the time. Dark natural steel finish makes for a handsome wrench, and no glare.

Picked this up since my last post - Williams S-110P extension. Has the Diamond W logo.

My dad used to have one like those. My gramps gave it to him. I wonder where it is right now. Sadly, I forgot to ask my father before he passed away.

Picked up this little 1/4" Superratchet this week. Looks like the chrome plating has worn so the copper layer underneath is shining through. It was completely packed with hardened grease, but works great now.

This showed up in the mail today:


An almost complete Hex drive set, only missing the T-handle and two sockets. But look at the decals!


All packed snug with a 5/16's spinner and the two extra sockets I have in that size. The appropriate t-handle is already on the way.

I forgot to add, there was a complete one listed at the same time, but the decals were in a bad state, very bad and the t-handle was bent. I debated between the two, and figured I could find the parts I needed easier than a good set of decals.

Blackie, My grandfather used Williams, Proto, Bonney and New Britian his entire life. This is the largest H-51 3/4 Dr and the smallest 1/4 dr 1/8 inch deep socket and some wrenches I could find.

I picked up this little box recently. The lid is quite rusty, but the rest of it is in good shape. Seems like a good place to use up some of that black crinkle-coat paint.

Speaking of time capsules, according to the patent (2,600,617) this SC-8 Adjustable Crowfoot is between 69-73 years old--but looks like it just came out of the box.

As first reported in the Garage Sale thread, I snagged this early "DEMOUNTABLE-RIM TOOL" at the flea market this morning.



The "PATD." marking on the cheek above the W-Diamond logo (see Pic 5 for close-up) refers to Design Patent D46,782, granted in 1914. It combines a hammer, an 11/16" hex socket opening (marked on the opposite cheek see Pic 6 for close-up), and a pry bar. DATAMP has an informative page with the patent diagram and a period ad from a trade mag, linked here. Unfortunately, we don't have any public domain catalog from that time period, with a gap from 1912 to 1937 on ITCL, except for a 5-page hardware store excerpt from 1919 that does not include it.

I've never seen one before in the wild or on-line (GJ, AA, etc). Not quite as cool as the early 12-function "Auto Tool" they made, which I have yet to see in the wild, but I am elated with this find.

Once cleaned out, there was an almost complete Williams M8 set, with a few extras:

Its only missing the socket spinner, the mini-pliers, and the metal extension/socket spinner. All of which I have in other sets. It does have extra deep sockets so it now goes from 9/16's to 1/8th, extra 9/16 socket, and super wrench. So, while I look for the missing pieces, I thought I would put the set to work as my new main 1/4 set.


Here is what was also in the box when I got it:

There is Snap-on, Proto LA, SK, Craftsman, Klein, among other stuff.

Thanks guys. Sorry jk, got caught up bidding on this one. My impulse control is sometimes lacking when it comes to tools. The old williams stuff is stylish! Added a ratchet and some newer deep sockets to this electrical set.
