I never did find out about this piece. It looks like it would serve a similar purpose. The numbering is different.
1/2” drive but wouldn’t fit any sockets when I tried it. Retaining ball on one side and a stop ball on the back. Has a cross bar hole at the other end. Maybe an older version of the above tool?

Were the sockets not fitting because the broached holes were rounded in the corners and the driver has very sharp corners?

Edit.... actually what I'm noticing in some Williams catalogs, example 1945, the numbering with "82" corresponds to 9/16. So I'm guessing the measurement of those square ends on your "1982" attachment might be 9/16? Can you mic them?

It’s going to be a while yet before I can get a look at it but I wonder about your theory. Have not seen it in any cats. It isn’t a 5/8”, that I can say for sure.

Some of my older sockets/tools do not fit on the newer ones. Just slight machining differences.

I tried to find some info but only one item on ebay. Nothing in the list of manufacturers thread. Read some on the History page but only locations in Buffalo and Brooklyn, NY.

This is a badge to a specialty tool. It is a floor mounted engine stand for aircooled VW & Porsche engines.
In the process of restoring and painting it. No pics other than the badge for now.
It has been refurbished and perhaps resold as there were traces of a couple colors. Originally blue and then machine gray. Badge was torn up at rivets before I got it, as if it was hastily removed before.

Issue: Does anyone either have a copy of Williams Tools of Industry 21st Edition, or can you point me to a free download? Or at least confirm what year it's from?

Discussion:
1. I saw Wrenchguy's 1915 "16th Catalog Issue" on Post 900 of this thread, which prompts the assumption (!) that the 21st Ed. is from 1920. I have soft copies of the 1937, 1943 and 1949 catalogs from archive.org, but none of them specify an edition number, or at least not that I can find.

2. The initial question is based on a search for details on Williams 564 and 605 wrenches identified on blueprints provided by Reed-Prentiss (doubtlessly related to one of the 14" lathes they sold to the Navy), in the archives of a battleship where I do some volunteer work. I pulled info about the wrenches from the 1937 and 1943 catalogs, but the blueprints specifically refer to "Williams Tools of Industry, 21st Edition," so I'd like to use that reference, if possible, to ID the wrenches.

3. I assume that the info in the 1937 and 1943 catalogs is essentially a cut/paste to (or more likely, from) the 21st Edition. But I'd like to get beyond assumptions and into facts.

4. The 564 is a tool post wrench, nominal openings 1-1/16" (open) x 5/8" (closed), per. pg. 31 of the 1937 catalog.
The 605 is a check nut (thin single open end) wrench, nominal opening 7/8", per pg. 18 of the 1937 catalog.

RTM, thanks! You answered the key question for me! Apparently that document was posted to the web sometime in 2018.

The 1936 catalog isn't listed on that seller's website, but pending a response to email. We'll see where this goes. If it ends in a catalog in my hands, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

Lugz, Wrenchguy's catalog is from 1915.

Yeah, sorry, guys. I paged back and found it myself. I was momentarily misremembering and confused. For years we've had the 1912 and the 1931 (Superrenches only) in the public domain thanks to the hardcopy owners of those and Archive/ITCL, but unfortunately a fairly large catalog gap in between. Mike, images of your 1916 pages would close it a little, but we really need something in the 1920's.

I found this today:

Now, it was filled with cheap K-mart tools, literally, and some even worse garbage to make a metric set.

But, I brought it home as I cannot leave things like that behind. Checking my spare Willims drawer, I was able to put most of the original B-2 set that came in the box together:

The set goes from 1/4" to 3/4", with both 5/16" and 11/32" included. I did slip a 17/32" in as I had one floating around, and the 3/8" should be 12-point.

Sunday I found an old Williams "S" wrench. It is marked with the diamond-W, 679, and the oval logo stamped in one face with the Brooklyn address. The large end has been abused, but seems to measure 5/8" at the base of the opening, while the 9/16" opening on the other end is in pretty good shape.
