Yep, saw set. I think. Maybe. Probably.

Hardly anyone bothers to use, let along resharpen and reset, hand saws any more, so saw sets are ancient relics.

Still, a hand saw can be overall quicker and more convenient at times compared to hunting up your cordless and a live battery, let alone running an extension cord for a plug-in saw. They still have a place. And in joinery and fine woodworking, there are various specialty hand saws in common use, of course.

So this tool might be a 1950s tool. Do you think they set all the new saws by hand? I'm going to try it on my hand saw tomorrow. Thanks

outside of the high end, super deluxe custom tools I doubt it. Hand saws don’t make up a big enough market for that kind of attention to detail.

The ones most people buy these days are not set by hand. But the boutique saw makers, and those that restore grampas’s saw for you will often use a manual saw set. Most guys who sharpen their own will use a manual as well after sharpening..

be cautious setting your existing hand saw, you don’t want to give it too much set, or uneven set, as you will work too hard, or get a rough cut, or both.

I still use and sharpen my hand saws regularly. Most of the time it's just faster to use a hand saw for a single cut than to unwind a cord plug it in and then wind it back up again. Not to mention, the fact that is can be more accurate unless you take time to set up that power saw for the exact location.

I thought this thread was going to be about belts or suspenders. You know to keep up your gut when it has dun lapped over your jeans.

I thought that was "chest of drawers" disease - when your chest has fallen into your drawers!
