The two stroke Detroit’s are the only engine I know that can turn massive amounts of fuel into noise and smoke instead of power……

We had two trucks with 671s that I drove when I was younger, I still have the FWD, we converted the Diamond REO with a 350 Cummins, I hated it after that.

I once found a 371 in a fire circuit for a factory, they had just revamped the system and the motor was now out if the loop and they said I could have it. I needed to shut the fire system down and remove one pipe to get it out, the fire marshal wouldn't let me shut it down.🙁

Bought a brand new 1975 Chevy Titan 90 cabover sleeper single rear axle with a 6-71N and a Fuller 10 speed. Leased it to Mayflower the moving company. Was a great truck did everything we asked it too. It certainly wasn't the fastest thing on the road, but it got the job done for 5 years and then sold it for more than half of what we paid.

The head mechanic came out when we bought it and said: " If it doesn't leak oil, bring it back and we'll fix it"

One of my mechanics calls them Driptroits, lovingly though. ;)

Around here there used to be people that liked them in lobster boats, the one we took out of the Diamond REO went into a boat.

Most young lobster guys have huge Cats in their boats now, its amazing what the boats cost now. The old timers know what a bad season is and stay with the their old stuff as they know the payments come even if the lobsters don't.

They were even rarer on this side of the pond but I fondly remember them screaming past. Totally different sound to any other engine. Mostly used by a long gone truck manufacturer called Commer.

I feel people either love them or hate them for the most part. For a while it seams like everything came with at least the option to have a Detroit in it.

I have a couple newer Detroit engines, they are nothing like the old ones, but they were great engines and most everyone that has ever owned one would tell you that. The famous one is the 60 series, those are still available today in “off road” configurations. I also have a 50 Series, it is the baby of the family, but still huge.

Growing up in central KS in the 80's, many of the oil well/rig sites had to have water hauled to them daily and there were a few companies that did it local to us. Alot of them were tractor with a tank vs pulling a tank trailer. Anyway, most I think were running Detroits and Dad who used to drive trucks told me the secret to driving the water trucks with a DD was when you got there in the morning you had to slam the door on your hand so that you'd be mad enough to drive the truck like you were trying to blow it up, otherwise you'd never get enough loads in a day to pay the bills.
I wouldn't mind having one someday, but at this point it is way down on the list.

xtremek, here's a few choice clips...

2-71 generator like i own

3-71 Oliver 995 lugmatic
They frequently make it all the way to the end of the track
Oliver Super 99

4-53 diamond reo symphony

6V-53 in a C10.

8V-71 dumptruck

I couldn't find it on youtube, but i used to have a sound clip of a 12V-71T on dyno, that revved to an unholy rpm sounding like it was going to blow a hole in the world. Just gives me goosebumps. Nothing else like it ever has existed.

For an engine guy, there's nothing else like it.

I'll be honest, I wasn't digging the sound very much, until I heard it from inside the cab of the old Chevy. That sounded sweet.

Some sound better than others, the 6V71 is probably one of the most common ones, they are one of my favorites. They made some really big engines too.

They are really only sort of practical if you can find one of the rare aluminum block engines for a less than 1 ton truck. I'd love to have a 6V-53T aluminum block engine for a swap. I'll probably be dead before i find one though.

Here's a good clip of one.

Speaking of Detroits, I am buying some bulk oil tanks tomorrow.

Today I need to deal with my Dad and what I hope to be the final info for the online bank setup, this will allow all six different company accounts to be under one login, I will be able to transfer between them and also pay people through ACH transfers. It should make things much easier for me, it has been hell the last few months not having access to everything.

I won’t be caught up with the paperwork until sometime next year, there is really no way to do it without the new office being setup. I just don’t have the space or patience to deal with the current mess. I still have another week or so before I am close enough that I can deal with the accountant.

I am only using them for my waste oil in the shop, I have been nervous about using the plastic ones since I use torches and welders. I am paying $650 for two of them, one has a pump and dispenser that I think I can sell.

I see a lot of scrap guys do that same thing. They have a decent couple of months, and then runout and buy a new truck. Next thing you know the price drops, and they are taking it back, and posting an ad for a used truck.

The best scrap guy I knew was also one of the worst human beings I knew, but he sure could save money. He had an old gas powered ramp truck, it had multiple fuel filters, he never ever bought gasoline, he just used whatever was in the junk cars he hauled. He was always trading things, he never made a bad trade, ever. The reason I say he was one of the worst human beings I knew is that he actually “made the rounds” the day after all the drug addicts got paid, he would buy stolen ****, brand new tools, cars, jewelry, whatever had value, always pennies on the dollar. That was why I stopped hanging around with him, I just couldn’t take it anymore. :( He was like a mobile pawn shop, except he never cared about ID or anything.

I know a lot of shady scrap guys. I avoid them.. If I have any idea that it is stolen I am out. I have walked away from a lot of nice stuff. One guy wanted to sell a fairly new ac recovery unit for $50! He really got mad when I told him to take a hike. I looked him up and he had about 15 arrests for stolen property.

How many gallons total of oil would you have? Stay under 1350 or you need a SPCC plan, Spill prevention and control plan

Technically I am effed anyways, they consider the 1350 total on the property, between the house, the wood shop, the regular shop (waste oil and regular furnace), then I have 55 gallon drums in the Quonset hut, there is more like 2000 gallons. I played the game with the fire Marshall at the SG and lost, I had a double wall 1000 gallon tank, he told me no effing way, then said just use four 330 gallon tanks, I told him he was nuts and there was no way those four tanks were as safe as one double wall tank. At this point I am just going to have to keep things as safe as possible, that is part of the reason I am upgrading tanks to at least be metal versus plastic.

Had another mattress cooler leak, this one seems more likely from the cat, will investigate further tomorrow. Definitely need to be more diligent with keeping it covered.

I have sleep/heat issues in the winter when the house is cold. I just sleep hot, period.

At this point I can live with the occasional leak, if it ends up costing me a $20 a month on average, it is worth it to me. Things are cooling down at night, but so far the days have still been fairly sticky. I figure we have another couple weeks and it will be nice working weather for me.
