You guys are making me have Vise envy, so I've been shopping around.
Here's one that's listed in my local area but I don't know?, 175 bucks-seems pricey for a cheapskate like me! what do you experts say. I guess the guys getting some free posting, thanks to me.

That vise is missing part of the base. I have a picture of the same vise up a few posts, you can see the base that should be on that one.

You can see the plate on the bottom of my vise. I bought the vise without the plate, I got lucky and a guy over on Practical Machinist had a spare one sold it to me for $10 and $10 shipping. Oh, by the way, I would take $175 for that old Reed, all day long!:pimpflash

I bought my Reed 32 with the base, but I didn't have that fancy thumbscrew like bgott's.

I'm really not a huge fan of that center screw mounting method. I tightened it down and much as I felt I could without damaging my ****-tastic particle board benchtop and the vise still rotates a fraction of an inch when I rock on it. Forward/backward, it's rock solid, no movement, but it rocks a little the other way....

Oh, and the jaws are 4.25", not 4.5". They open 8 1/2 inches, though!

I'd love to get a set of pipe jaws for it.

ok, that's what i was thinking but knew you guys would know. Thanks for having me hold back.

Don't pay more than ~$1.00/lb locally unless it is something really special. Or if it has been restored properly. Then you are buying some piece of mind in that the vise has been inspected.

I like that Dunlap. They were supposed to be Sears economy alternative to Craftsman but I've never seen anything by them that seems even remotely cheap. My best cutting jack plane is a Dunlap.
I'd clean that one up and mount it.

Looking at the background looks like you have some mini-econoline pickup restorations in your future?

Mine are all au naturel, hope to be able to fix them up as I move into my new shop (maybe this summer)

Inherited this one from my late FIL, who inherited it from his late FIL, who had it in the shop in his brickworks in Powassan, Ontario 50 years ago. Don't know where he got it. Hopefully not setting a pattern but my girls are young. 5" jaws
brian.jpg

This is the one I grew up with in the shop here on the farm, 5.5", came out of the old stone blacksmith shop on the north end of the farm when the blacksmith retired in the mid 60s. Dad remembers it when he was a kid in the 40s in the shop. Anvil shown later also came from there. Threads are getting sloppy on this one.
blacksmith.jpg

This 6" one my wife picked up today along with a used set of 1"drive sockets and a good Victor torch kit with 2 full owned tanks and a nice cart.
vise.jpg

Record #2 also from the farm shop since way before I was born. Jaws are rough, pads gone.
record2.jpg

And a little Pony, I assume Chinese, I picked up for tiny work.
pony.jpg

And the anvil. One of 2 anyway, neighbour has my other one. I may have to get aggressive about that.

Two of my records, the biggest n smallest.
The 114 is 8" and got it with the property, been sitting outside since forever. The small one is a model 2075 Record 3.5", never seen another one like it. Will be bringing the old Record inside soon. Maybe fix it up, the jaws are no longer square.

Picked this up today off Kijiji (same as Craigslist) From a retired gent, mid 70s maybe, who used to own a garage here in town for over 40 years. Now his shop is an 8x10 garden shed and he's never found room to mount it so he sold it to me. 6" jaws, no markings other than the 150 which I assume is mm?
Everything works smooth, no wobbles, only a few dings on the pads. He doesn't remember when or where he got it but said he had it in his shop for decades. Anybody know where it's from?

He also still has a big 6' Snap-On chest he bought roughly in the late 50s in great shape other than faded paint, think he's holding onto that one for dear life.

So, did Craftsman actualy make their own vises.... or are they make by someone else?

Says "No506- 51810" on the side of it..

The new find is nearing completion...

You may want to take the paint off of the slide. It often gums up.

I love the fire engine red!

That's a sweet old Record. That style of jaw is called a tin knocker style IIRC.Made more for sheet metal work than heavy hammering.I don't think I've ever seen a Record version of it.And it has the quick release feature too!

The little one the jaw switches around to allow for a wider opening right?Haven't seen too many of those.

Can't say I know where it's from but I can vouch for it being a quality vise.I have one on one of the benches at work(minus the swivel base) and it gets used hard. It's held up well over the years and it's one of the first vises I head for when I need to clamp something.

I might be getting rid of this in the not-so-distant future, so I wanted to go ahead and post it up here. This is a Columbian No. 608 with 8" jaws and weighing in at 180 lbs or so. Like a dummy, I cleaned it up before taking any "before" pictures, so this is all I've got.

It came from a Mac truck mechanic place that went out of business right here in Huntington. It's kind of a funny story how I got it. I found out about the sale on CL on a Sunday night, so at 8 a.m on Monday morning I was knocking on the door. I looked through what I thought was everything and saw a couple cool things, but nothing that I really wanted to buy, so I was about to leave when all the sudden I realized that I had walked right past the tool room. Way back in the corner, I saw this beast hiding on a cluttered and greasy bench and knew that I had to have it. At the time, it was the biggest vise I'd ever seen. When I picked up the price tag, I was heartbroken to see that it was being held for someone even thought they hadn't paid for it, but then I saw that it was only to be held until 9 am that day. So I asked the owner if it was close enough, because it was about 8:50 by that time but he said he wanted to give the buyer until 10 to show up. That was a long hour! At exactly 10, I asked him again and he called the guy and my heart sank again because the guy said he was on his way and would be there in a half hour. That was a long half hour! Then he made me wait ANOTHER half hour just to be sure the buyer wasn't going to show up!

Finally, at exactly 11 am, I threw the cash at him and the vise was mine. Unfortunately, it was still bolted to the bench so I had to run back home and get a crescent wrench because we couldn't find one anywhere in teh shop. When I got back, the original buyer had finally shown up and he was just standing there next to the vise waiting for me. He was pretty aggravated but I didn't feel bad because I didn't do anything wrong. He had his chance. Anyway, I had paid $150 for it and he asked me if I would take $200 for it. As tempting as it was, I had gone through a lot to get that thing and I wasn't about to let go of my prize. So then he said $250. Still no. $300? I probably should have sold it to him, but it was just not for sale. He ended up making me take his phone number and telling me that he'd be willing to go up to $400 or $500 if I ever decided to sell it! Poor fella. :D

So this thing has been living with me ever since. Without further ado, here are the pics.
